This has probably been done to death, but I couldn't find it.

So what is with all the hate for the World Cup?

I honestly can't understand it. I certainly prefer other sports over it, but I don't get the rabid rage over it that I see a lot of Americans have.

They don't.
I've met a lot of americans on these forums who were pretty passionate about soccer.
But, hell, even if you're right, most Europeans dislike American football also, so the door swings both ways.

America hasn't had a great history with football, so I hear.
Their team is pretty good, actually, or so I believe.

As an American, I believe that people (including me) would rather watch a more violent sport like tackle football.

Soccer is just a bunch of guys kicking a ball into a net.

A bit of generalizing, yes, but it's really shocking how much hate this sport generates here in the States. At least in my area (Pittsburgh,PA). You ask someone about the World Cup, there's only three responses:

1 (most common)F**k that pussy sport! You can't even use your hands!
2 (less common)Whatever. I don't watch soccer.
3 (very uncommon)I love watching soccer! Go Team USA!

No, we just call it rugby and play it without padding. Also, this isn't a USA and Europe thing, this is a USA and rest of the world thing.

For the record, I'm not particularly interested in fottball of any flavour. But I'm gay.

I think that i doesn't work that way.

like with videogames, there are people who just don't care, some who love, some who look at it at certain events (like a world cup) and some who hate (wich is in my oppinion stupid, why wasting time and energy with hating something like a certain Sport or things alike).

And then it is just a cultural thing.

We may be called "The West" but that doesn't mean we are all the same. ^.^

Rawr! Need more violence! Soccer is too pansy of a sport! Moar violence equals moar better!

Yeah America, that's what you sound like. Anyway, I am guessing football doesn't give the same rush of adrenaline as watching a 30 guys on the field bash the shit out of each other over a ball. From my own view I would say that is accurate. I know if I had to choose I would watch American football for that reason. Though like most sports I can take or leave soccer. I will watch it with friends but I won't keep up with it on my own. I just don't care about any sport.

(please note that I am actually American and just insulted myself too)

Personally, I just find the game very boring, very uneventful. To me, it's just a bunch of people briskly running up and down a field, while some guy occasionally kicks a ball, then a guy standing in front a net smacks said ball out of the air, and then they start all over again. I find watching the grass grow more exciting than soccer.

Also, sports shouldn't end in a draw anymore. It's just not fun to watch ninety minutes of people kicking a ball, only to have nobody win. Thats just not fun to watch at all, a tie just means both teams are losers.

Americans have money to spend on more expensive sports that's why. Soccer is most popular with countries that can't afford things like shoulder pads and Ice skating rinks.

We don't.

------

?The 2010 FIFA World Cup is off to a tremendous start for ESPN,? said John Skipper, ESPN executive vp, content. ?Strong viewership on television and other platforms ? including the best first round rating in 16 years ? and the overwhelmingly positive reaction we are receiving from fans demonstrate the enormous popularity of this global sports event and how ESPN is uniquely positioned to cover it.?

------

The mad ravings of some pundit do not count for more than the millions of Americans watching the games every day.

I'll tell you what, in central Ohio America's success in the world cup (also Columbus Crew's championship run last season) has led us to really embrace soccer. I was down at the good ol' boys' barbershop yesterday getting chopped and we were all watching and cheering as we shot goals against Gana. Never would have thought I'd see the day...
