Has anyone noticed that most rpgs don't have scythes as a weapon choice? (None modded games) It sort of annoys me because almost everyone loves a scythe as a weapon. So I was wondering what do you think the reasons for the lack of scythes is?
I was looking for the article and was ninja'd. So... this.Souplex said:Because scythes aren't weapons. They're farming tools. Only an idiot would fight with a scythe.

Exactly, why go into a fight with scythe, a FARMING tool, when you could use... oh lets say a halberd, you know something thats actually made to be used as a weapon?Souplex said:Because scythes aren't weapons. They're farming tools. Only an idiot would fight with a scythe.
It's sharp and can cut stuff. Sound like a perfect weapon. Also, knives were cooking tools and are considered weapons.masseyguy911 said:Exactly, why go into a fight with scythe, a FARMING tool, when you could use... oh lets say a halberd, you know something thats actually made to be used as a weapon?Souplex said:Because scythes aren't weapons. Or a Halberd, why is every game against me using an axespear?Souplex said:Because scythes aren't weapons. They're farming tools. Only an idiot would fight with a scythe.

The real question is why do RPGs neglect polearms and axes? Historically they were the most commonly used melee weapons. Swords were the equivalent of an officers pistol.
The blade is on the side of the user. You'd need to hook it around the enemy to cut them. That and the blades aren't designed for anything harder than cutting grain.Judgement101 said:It's sharp and can cut stuff. Sound like a perfect weapon. Darn, looks like Vern beat to it.Vern said:I think they're just not traditionally thought of as a weapon. Yes everyone has the idea of the Grim Reaper as carrying a scythe to reap the fields of humanity, but aside from that they were clearly designed as a farming tool. The blade has a small point of impact for direct strikes, and require large sweeping movements to possibly connect with the main body of the blade. They're also rather heavy. So you have a weapon with a small chance of connecting, requires large movements to use, and weighs quite a bit more than a sword or axe with no increase to the chance of doing damage. They're cool yes, but impractical as a weapon. Still, the scythe in Postal 2, Undying, and Chrono Trigger were cool. They also appear pretty commonly in the early Final Fantasy games, up until seven. The Scythe in Undying was interesting in that you could actually miss, and just whack them with the wooden shaft if you were too close, illustrating the point that they aren't really great weapons.
