It's easy really, most want to justify the choice (and associated costs) of choosing one of a particular group of products. People defend their cars as vehemently because they don't want to be told that they could've done better. Subconsciously (or consciously) they'd like to think that every decision they've ever made was the perfect choice and evidence to the counter shatters their pristine world view.

They just don't want to even remotely think that there's anything wrong with what they like, so they will defend it to the death.

Why do fanboys defend their favorite console or game company with such fervor? - They either feel their console is being unfairly treated or they want to cover up their mistakes

Why do fanboys attack other people's consoles? - to make their purchase seem more worthwhile and most suffer from a superiority problem.

Why do fanboys attack anyone who has a criticism of a game, company, or console without even considering the validity of the criticism? - superiority issue, they all think the way they think is right.

Why do fanboys protect the status quo against positive criticism, improvement, progress, and feedback? - superiority issue

Why do fanboys insulate their object of affection from any objective examination? - because objective statements are hard to make in discussing games

Why do fanboys act against their own self interest? - superiority issue

Why do fanboys even exist? - take a guess what I'll say

Fanboys are often the ultimate suckers, they are at the front lines of console wars, they promote propaganda and make excuses for their favorite company, they defend companies against criticism that could improve the industry, and who benefits at the end? Whatever corporation they are representing as unpaid goons.
from experience it seems to be supperiority problems with fanboys. They think they are always right regardless of what people say.

Because they have nothing better to do and feel kinda threatened or insecure because of the other console so try to justify their purchase.

Real men have this to do.

Because we need the rush that we get when we maybe, just maybe, feel that we convinced another human being to join the lighter and better side.

Other than that I do not know why they exist (or else it's the reason that some people like to whine and bash)

Just to rationalize ones own purchases. Everybody does that. Sense of security in confirming yourself.

Fanboys shouldn't exist. But neither should rapists and murderers.

Maybe because people like to try to be right about everything, even something as stupid as which console they like best.

Then answer is simple:

Most humans are by no means rational creatures.

That explains it all. They get emotionally attached to a certain outcome

'PS3 is better than Xbox260 in all aspects.' Possible subtext: 'Because if this is not the case then I chose poorly and have an inferior console'

and then because facing the possibility that the decision or pre-determined outcome might be wrong causes some level of emotional discomfort, it leads to people defendind that chosen viewpoint to ad nauseam with more and more outlandish arguments.

Because gamers have self-esteem issues, and for many of them, a game company, game franchise or game console is as close as they're ever going to get to a meaningful relationship.

Because they have nothing better to do that why. Intead of playing the games they love, they feel the need to shoot down everyone that doesn't see things the way they see it. As annoying as fanboyism is, it'll never go away no matter how much we want it to, just like the war on drugs and terrorism. We're just going to have to accept the fact that fanboyism is going to stay.

Fanboys more than like a series, they attack anyone that openly dislikes what they like. They're a breed of cultists spawned from the digital age, the age of the internet, where with a few simple 'googles' one can find like dorks serving the same cause of stupidity.

To be a fervent fan of something is one matter, but to be a fervent fan that insists that if you don't like what they do and if you say anything negative about it, you and your family should be burned to ash, mashed into a compost pile, and used to fertilize the grazing grounds of whatever animal will defecate the most upon your scattered remains is something else entirely.

Fanboys are the ultimate punchline to the worst joke ever. Case in point; Shigeru Miyamoto once said that Americans will buy anything (referring to games) that looks pretty, no matter how bad it is. Rabid American fanboys will to this day call him "Miyamoto-sama" (and even that's incorrect) whenever his name is mentioned in an article, despite his history of openly disparaging their nationality.

Anyone remember when Squaresoft thought some of their titles were too hard or too complicated for westerners to even be capable of playing? Apparently Final Fantasy fanboys don't, because if you ever say anything to a cosplayer wearing a long white wig and wielding an over-sized "I'm clearly not compensating for my manhood" sword about how SquareEnix is a craptacular company these days then best of luck on your surviving an escape from that room.

Incidentally, I've loved playing games by Miyamoto and Squeenix, even if they hate us westerners as a species. I don't love them or their companies, but some of their products are clever and very enjoyable.
