Why do gamers (people on this website) generally dislike sports?

I just find all sports so totally boring, even the ones where stuff actually happens like UFC because even UFC can get dull when all you see are submission matches (two guys rolling around on the floor without spilling any blood= not entertaining). All the other sports like football (both kinds), rugby, golf, darts, snooker, pool, basketball, hockey, etc. just seem to go on forever.

For example: the average football (soccer) match goes on for about 90 minutes, in that time goals are missed, missed, come-very-close, scored, missed, half-time, missed, missed, scored, fouled and missed again but even with all that (ahem) "action" happening 90% of it is watching tiny figures running around on a field chasing a ball. I can see the same thing when I take my dog to the park and at least my dog doesn't earn more than a small country for doing so.

The other 10% are replays of stuff I just saw a second ago, what the hell is the point in this? Does the target audience have such a short attention span that you need to show them the important bits twice so they remember how important they are?

Plus, I'm a lazy prick. I work my ass off all week, why should I be expected to go out and kick a ball around for an hour? I'm exhausted, leave me alone and let me relax in my digital fantasy world where I can blow stuff up with my giant space-gun.

I think its because sports don't count to escapism and most people on the Escapist want to talk about escapism (games etc).If they would want to talk about sports they would probably go to another website's forum that have more focus on sports.

I like non-team sports, and I also do running and swimming to keep in shape, but that's all. I wouldn't say I dislike sports, but I don't love it like I can love games.

You don't think sports are an escape? And what about sports video games? I think I've seen one thread on the Madden series the whole time I've been here.

Yeah maybe sports are an escape but this site seems to focus more on RPG's, shooters and minigames/casual games therefore it probably attracts people that probably doesn't play sports games

the thing i like about gaming is doing stuff that i can't get to do in real life :D

i can't :
go in to space and fight aliens and robots and save the galaxy...
or be a soldier in ww2...
or grab a sword and kill a dragon and some ogres
or jump into a lotus elise and trash it around the nürnberg ring (maybe.. but i would die... alot...)
just about anything you do in games are fun things that normally is limited to your head...

you can on the other hand go out and kick a ball around all day if you wan't to.. or throw it... or hit it... i don't need a game for that :)

I love sports, I just don't take the time to deal with it... Probably should look into that.

Skipping the 5 pages of posts:
"Probably because they don't do it enough."

On a sidenote, also with skipping the 5 pages of posts:
"We like sportz and we don't care who knows."

Gaming =/= Sports

I think most people are missing the hand eye coordination, general physical fitness, and all around general charisma required to play sports well.

A Few of us like sports, but Think about it like this, people are trying to stop Gaming and Sports from merging, and Sports fans usually only play mainstream videogames, and act like they are hardcore gamers. This generally pisses off us REAL Gamers and makes us tend to take it out on what they love to do.Halo is a good game, but some of the idiots who spew about it on live ruin our experience.Same for Madden,I'd play it,but idiots and live Mix too easily.

I love sports personally. In fact if I was given the choice between a decent sized football match (soccer match...about 4 on 4 at least) or a video game session I'd take the game. Same for a rugby match or a video game session.

I like sports (hence my avatar), and I've never really noticed others not liking them.

I fell off with sports as I got older; I used to really like watching football and basketball, but with the change of the times came changes in rules and how the games played, even line-ups (and I got super-hooked on martial arts after playing too many fighting games). Nowadays, every single team has that one person that carries the team (i.e. LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Ray Lewis just to name a few). They get hurt, retire, or flat out leave the team and the rest of the team is nothing short of fucked.

Also, games are too predictable nowadays (especially football); when the offense gets in certain positions you can pretty much bet money on what's gonna happen and you'd win.

I just never liked them. I can see the appeal to playing them, I suppose. (Even if my P.E classes were pure torture on my end) But I really don't get the point of watching them. Or rather, why people are so god damned passionate about whether or not a bunch of people they don't know will win a trophy for tossing a ball around.

More generally, gamers and jocks are just polar opposites. Gamers are more timid and quiet, usually out of shape, and prefer to sit down and get lost in a fantasy world. Jocks are loud-mouthed idiots that tend to bully other people, geeks and gamers being on the top of their list.
