Why do Jocks get away with it?

Except the football team. The coaches are still making absurd amounts of money and the program isn't losing any funding. While I struggle to get into classes because they had to drop a section, the football coach still gets his fucking pay raise because they don't want him to quit and go to another college.

Departments that actually teach important things that matter like: calculus, physics, composition, psychology, philosophy, education, humanities, engineering, technical training, and business, are losing their adjuncts because they can't afford them. As a result, classes are over full, teachers are overworked, students don't get as much feedback on their studies, books are being sold out because instructors aren't given enough time to order more, and students have to enroll for extra semesters so they can get required prerequisites.

I'm honestly surprised this country isn't dumber than it already is.
At my High School, I am in Band and Art. Neither get any funding. Because of the damn budget cuts, I have to work in a goddamm concession stand for 2 8-hour shifts to pay off my band-dues, and the arts program is entirely fundraiser-driven. And they're STILL hiring more coaches for the POS football team at my school! WE ONLY WON TWICE SINCE I ENROLLED. I'M IN THE 11TH GRADE, AND I WAS HERE SINCE 6TH. Can't they realize it's a lost cause and invest in the programs that have RESULTS? The Marching Band got 1st place last year, and we did not even have a goddamn band directer for half the year!

WTF?!?!

I just lost 20 minutes, and gained 10 pages of quotable material.
NFL verses NASA?

I am very confused, the National Forensics League versues the National Aeronautics and Space Administration?

Because people fucking suck that's why.

I dealt with this exact same type of fucking bullshit in my school. Constantly beat up by jocks, ignored by teachers and when I did anything about it, they shrugged it off like nothing.

Things went to an extreme amount though. They'd all gang up on me, beat me, cut me and just humiliate me. Once I decided to say anything, the teachers told me I had a problem because I supposedly "self inflicted the wounds"

I had had it with them and that school. I ended up kicking the shit out of each and every last fucking one of them and would have been expelled had I not have left the next day anyway. I know how much that shit sucks as I've lived through it myself.

As for why... I don't know. Jocks are seen as stars of the school. As long as they continue getting the school to look good in the sports aspects, they won't care what they do.

When/where did you go to school? Usually it's only universities that do that sort of thing. And if you're poor, how were you expelled?

They also get away with unbelievable amounts of rape on college campuses. Seriously. Go ahead, get drafted by a college team and rape anyone you'd like. The college can and will defend them in a legal battle; unless you have enough money to beat the university, you are S.O.L. (mostly because the American government really gets off on turning a blind eye on rape).

But it general, this just doesn't happen anymore. You hit someone in my school and regardless of the level of self defense your ass is suspended/sent to an ALC (except for one case but the kid was black, our principle is black, and well let's just say this isn't the first time she covered for someone).

Similar thing happened to me a couple years ago... except with me, it was in the guys' locker room. Asshole thought it would be funny if he gouged my eye with his thumb. I'm lucky I didn't sustain permanent ocular damage, let alone that he didn't pop my eye completely. I yelled at him, "ARE YOU TRYING TO FUCKING BLIND ME?!", he and his buddies just laughed their asses off. I punched the grating of the locker next to his head hard enough to draw blood from two of my knuckles, and hard enough that the noise scared the shit out of everyone nearby. I pointed a bloody finger at him and said that if he ever touched me again I would wring his neck. No more locker room bullying ever came my way. Officially the most badass/terrifying thing I have ever done.

Would that make them actually strong? I mean, they 'won', right? But strong is good and killing is bad... So they are good and strong but bad and weak for killing... Dear god, Dawrin is gonna be pissed.
I don't think Darwin thought about humans in these sorts of terms (not that I've extensively studied his works or anything), but he certainly knew that the animal better at killing was the most likely to have food (i.e.: their kills).

Still, the entire purpose of democracies (i.e.: the type of government you live in to be able to be posting on these forums without worrying about them watching you) is to keep the strong's shit in line.

I was beat up a little by jocks right up until one spit on me. I took by belt off and cracked it, just missing his face by about 2cm. He made like he was coming at me, so I cracked it across his stomach. I was beat up until I took a stand. Now, trying to more or less hang the offender...maybe not the best move, but I could see where you'd be pissed. I've done my fair share of damage to people over the years. Strangulation though...not my thing. I like hearing bones pop when the joint is dislocated. XD

I mean...

I try to avoid violence whenever possible? XD

Unfortunately, there are weird standards like this everywhere. I knew a girl that totally nailed, and I mean did some serious damage to this one guy in my classed nuts. She did a straight kick and then dragged the heal down. I'm pretty sure he got a bruised testicle out of the deal. His offense? He said something that apparently pissed her off. I heard what he said, and while I can't recall the exact words, it wasn't something that warrented that. Her punishment? She was told to apologize.

I put someone in a headlock once for trying to kick me in the nuts. I got sent to the principle.

Oddly enough, the one time I thought I was going to get in trouble about a fight, I didn't. I knocked out the principle's son. He threw a football at me because I was the new guy. It nailed me in the head, so I ran over and decked him. One hit KO, right there. It was a lucky shot, I admit, but still. I was told that that the little bastard was the principle's son. I freaked out. I talked to the principle a bit, didn't even feel like I was in trouble and he sent me back to class.

On the other hand though, when I shouldn't have gotten in trouble, I got 3 hours of detention and had to write a three page paper explaining that what I did was wrong. What I did was stop a guy from wailing on a guy half his size, and shoved him away from me when he got up in my face. I walked away and got a haymaker to the back of the head and then he went for a knife. Luckily, the teacher who had stepped out saw him hit me and headlocked him. I got in trouble for shoving him away from me and keeping him from hurting the kid half his size. Granted, he broke his hand on my head and got suspended, but still.

I think he meant National Football League.
Though, I could be misreading sarcasm, in which case I've made myself look dumb...

I'll just be completely honest: I'm a jock. I have Varsity Letters in both Cross-Country and Rowing, as well as significant prowess in Baseball, Lacrosse and Football (though I no longer play them). However, contrary to your argument, I rest on my merits. It might be because I'm mild, but whatever. I'm still fairly violent when I feel the need to be. Using "jock" as an insult might not be the best idea considering that you don't know what every jock is like.

With that in mind, remember too that a football player simply pulled a prank and you fucking tried to kill him. You don't exactly look all that innocent to me.

To be honest, you could hardly characterize me as anything but a jock, and I've never seen any of the things described in this thread. Maybe it's my school, but I'm a three sport athlete (football, basketball, and lacrosse) and have never beaten anyone, nor have any of my teammates, to my knowledge. And in regards to the perceived leniency concerning grades and punishments, in my experience the athletes have been held to a higher standard in the classroom, and received more harsh punishments for misdeeds.

Its not just jocks, its anyone whose popular. Like it has been posted before jocks bring accolades and money to schools (especially needed by public schools). But also preps and "popular" kids get away with all these things as well. For popular kids it more emotional and psychological bullying, but it can hurt just as much as physical.

I was a jock and I wasn't a bully. I hung out with everybody, protected the younger kids, I've even told off some of my own friends for doing what you were talking about.

I'm sorry to hear what you went through and I hope that the people who did that too you got theirs, but not all jocks are like this and they DO NOT get away with it

Never really come across this sort of thing myself. At least, i've never seen it so extreme. More than anything, I think you were just excruciatingly unlucky to end up in such a neglectful, uncaring environment. Perhaps the intensity of your eventual retaliation caused a kneejerk reaction too, although i'm certainly not suggesting you're in any way to blame. As to why they get away with it, i'm not sure. As I said at the beginning, they don't always. Really, it's just a social heirarchy, coupled with an outdated, laissez-faire view on the enforcement of order. The jocks are the toughest, and thus at the top of the ladder. They enforce their dominance with a show of strength, and ostracise the weak. Modern society is set up to protect the interests of all, but your principal clearly has the sensibilities of an older generation, one that would let nature run its course, as if society should be a heirarchical structure based on masculinity. As they say, 'boys will be boys'.

This is a really distressing topic. As a middle school teacher and (obviously) a man of similar tastes to others who post here, I make it my job to validate the lesser appreciated folk around the student body in effort to avoid this. Gamers etc, are still looked down upon these days but I have my students (and this may help others as well) constantly remind themselves that if it weren't for us, their scoreboards and loudspeakers wouldn't work. Let alone the iPods they cling so desperately to during practice!

Well really, the fate of the school shooter doesn't matter. Evolution as a concept is not a micro element, it is a macro.

The South did so well initially in the Civil War because they had a very well trained militia ready to go. The reason was they knew what was coming- mass slave rebellions. The ones where slaves actually got guns didn't end well for either party, and time has shown societies built on that big a slave-class (with no social mobility afforded) will surely crumble.

Schools have made sure this shit doesn't happen any more (public ones, at least) because those were smart people they fucked with, and smart (and rich, don't forget the rich part) make our laws. They inhabit our bureaucracies. They write long rants on the internet no one's actually going to read. But they got in there and they fixed it.

This reminds me of that guy who shot the politician last weekend. If we keep letting people mentally unstable people receive no care, it'll simply grow into a bigger, badder problem (see: random-ass divisions of the Middle East and Africa). How many gunman does it take?

How about that extremist shooter at the military base in Texas who they knew was in communication with terrorists?

The guy who shot the politician and many innocents, who have since died? Yeah, he was asked never to return to his community college because he was too batshit crazy. Class mates and old teachers all concur on this.

The problem is no one wants to leave their comfort zone until they're forced. Sounds more like a course on making new friends now, but the fact of the matter is batshit crazy people scare us.

If something scares you, you avoid it.

If someone is avoided long enough and batshit crazy, they're liable to shoot somebody.

The question is not when this (and countless other problems) will be fixed, but how many lives must be taken in the process how many lives must be taken before we get up and do something about it?

On a side note: I've gotten horribly off topic.
