In all seriousness though, I don't give a damn what I play as, because I will still kill everything I come across either way.

Its because I don't role play, as such. I don't imagine myself in New Vegas. Its more like I'm reading a book, or maybe watching a movie, and I get to choose what happens and when. The point is the main character isn't a representation of myself, its a character. So sometimes the characters I create are girls. Before I sound all fancy though, I should point out that I then create a little mental back-story for the character, complete with emotional baggage and favorite foods. Its all a little excessive.

I don't make an active attempt to play female characters, it just happens that a lot of the time my favorite character in a game is female for some reason. Though some of my friends think that it's really bizzare for some stupid reason.

I find it more fun to watch a thin action girl kicking ass and taking names than a big burly man doing the same.

Call it hormones.

I generally play as a female (male here), aside from the fact that i like looking at girls, it allows me to express different mood sets and play styles from what i usually do.

In the grand scheme of things it really depends on what type of game i'm playing, If something like COD had an option that would make a female character, i would, because more than likely she would be smaller in both height and frame, making you harder to see and hit. In Fighting games i chose female characters because 9/10 times they are more about speed, finesse, and precision, not about beating your opponent with brute force ( Hitomi of DOA and Cassandra of Soul Cal are exceptions, they both hit really hard.)

But more than anything else i find female characters to be pleasing to both watch and listen too, it is a lot easier to sit and listen to some very attractive girl ramble on about a plot you really could care less about than to suffer through the same speech from some gruff dude.

I expect there's some deep Freudian explanation, like it being because 'many gamers are lonely, and female characters tend to allow for more of an emotional connection', or something.

I almost always play as a dude. I play to immerse myself in the games and if I've got boobs then it's kinda a scene breaker for me. But every now and again, I'll try playing as a girl sometimes, and it is nice to be watching a quarter-bouncable ass running around than some dudes

4) Aesthetically more appealing than their male counterparts. And you usually have an ass-side-view you'll be staring at for hours. Might as well be a sexy bum than a sagging old man's crevice.
that's the reason

Well let me see
Males usually have choices like McGruffin, McGruffin2, Gay Elf, McGruffin3....
Females don't come with allot of choices [unless playable alien/humanoid characters] but there is a bit more difference here and there!

And really if playing female or male doesn't matters much [what game actually treats females different from males if they are the player, usually there is one type of treatment "You ere the player"

And if I am going to have to watch the ass of someone in third person mode at least make it half decent. Sorry to many times males are walking fridges..

In the end there is hardly any difference really The Hero is not male or female but The Hero. The games treats The Hero like The Hero not like a male or a female!

I am though very much against the idea that a thin strip of leather around the breasts and a tongue equal a 5+ plated armour. If male characters get to wear heavy armour and show it so will the girls!

10th time or so I answer this type of thread so let's get it on: If I am going to watch something bob up and down for many many MANY hours I would rather it be pwetty ^_^.
And this is the part where I agree with you.
Then I say that the only way GTA San Andreas could be better is if Catlina was the protagonist.
Not only was she hot but she also makes more sense... the way I play gta. That ***** crazy.

Depends heavily on the game. There is, of course, the (oft mentioned) fact that most women in games tend to have toned bodies and attractive features, but that will only hold appeal for so long. In the example of Mass Effect, for me it was the voice acting. Male Shepard=bland brick of a man, while Female Shepard=fiery yet disciplined soldier woman. Jennifer Hale's delivery made the same lines much more interesting.

In the case of RPGs where your character is more customizable, I tend to play male and female equally. I create a character, usually based on a number of tropes, and then I role-play that character within the game universe (or as close as the dialog options will let me). I'm a big believer in challenging role-play. Self-insert characters are incredibly boring. Mind you, your characters will always either share some values with you or have a number of cartoonishly opposite values from you... but the idea is to think out how someone else would act in a given situation.
