Because if we like the character enough, we will want to play as them. Male or Female, it does not matter. Personally I find in RPGs I like to create a back-story for my characters and if I focused on one gender, I would be limiting my experience.

Ever since I got my xbox I've always played as female. In Saints Row 2 (my first game) I played as this Crow/Joker type dude, but then halfway I switched to this redhead chick, which I played as in Oblivion as well. Then in Fallout 3 and New Vegas and Mass Effect 2 I kept the same redhead character going. For the moral choice games I made an identical black haired character for my evil playthroughs. Just habit really.

Male here.

Often female characters simply look better than their male counterparts; ranging from their outfits, to their language, and demeanor, to their available inventories. Playing as a female character, more often than not, is simply more enjoyable.

In essence, the character I select to play through a game with, is simply the best looking/best fitting to my play style, that is available; regardless of gender. Coincidentally, females fill that roll more often than males.

A good example of this is as follows:

In Elder Scroll Games I most commonly play as a male, given the 'special' armor designs of the females. Whereas in Mass Effect games I almost universally play as a female, as Shepard looks better that way in my eyes(armor, dialogue, etc.).

This is a post for anyone who said things along the lines of "if i'm going to stare at an ass for hours on end it should be attractive" I have one question?

What game are you playing that is so boring that you have enough freetime to stare at your characters ass?

It's mind-numbingly closed minded for anyone to judge another person for finding a piece of art (in games, anime, movies, Western Cartoons, ect.) attractive. So for many of us it boils down to just that: "The women are more attractive to play as for 16-200+ hours than the men".

I mean, have you seen Fang and Vanille? <3

Yes shuttup, I know the game itself needs some giant modifications and that Vanille makes happy sounds

I can understand it in WoW, because of the insane sexual dimorphism, the males are grunting, steroid-laden brick shit houses, and the women look more like what we find attractive in our own species today. (Fun fact: The female troll and tauren models looked a lot...manlier in the alpha. Also, yes I know blood elves are pretty, but remember they're also more muscular than their original model.) So yes, purely aesthetics. And to put it simply: I'm a girl. I like my characters to be pretty. I don't want to run around as a brick shit house.

(Also, in most cases females have a smaller hitbox than males, which makes the game easier on a number of levels.)

What irritates me is the guys who play female toons just to beg for gold/gear/etc "because I have a vagina lulz", when real women (at least the ones I know) don't beg just for the sake of being a woman. :/

No wait.... What I meant was: Why do you assume all males play as females?
I don't think the OP is saying all males play as females, just many do. Which is true from the thread responses here.

OT: I play all my RPG's as females, and since thats (in my opinion anyway) the genre that usually has best character customisation, females it is.

Not sure why though. I don't dig the whole 'tough guy' look that a lot of male protagonists have going for them these days.

To quote my friend "If I'm gonna look at somebody's ass for 100+ hours I might as well enjoy it". I don't usually play with female characters but I understand the appeal, especially if it leads to different endings or NPC reactions.

if it's a single player game, i'll play a female for the basic reason alot of people are giving. if i have to stare at someone's ass for a few hours, i'd rather it be a female.
multiplayer games like MMO's, i allways play a male character though unless the choices are genderlocked and i want to be a cleric like allways. (damn you, vindictus.)

I play female characters because my mannerisms are kind of femenine, and my characters reflect myself... Kinda. >_>
I can relate to this. I've been told I have the physique of a lesbian and it's not far off... except my beard and another significant male feature. In many cases I often find it easier to relate to a slimmer, agile, female character than a buff, burly, male. Faith from Mirror's Edge is a great example, I can relate to her much easier than I can to Marcus Fenix despite roughly the same effort going into either character's backstory. This is also why I gravitate towards elves and rogues in RPGs and more or less stay away from warriors and dwarves.
Same.

If I can choose the gender, like with most RPGs, I typically choose a dude. But I won't oppose playing as a chick for a game I think looks good

I dunno. If I like a game, I play it in any way I can.

Offers an alternate perspective...

I personally dont really Pay attention or care about if my Portagonist is a girl, I can usually sometimes play through the Resident evil game and not even care that half of the time I was a girl.
Female portagonism to me is basically a slposh of paint on a perfectly good picture. It's weird makes no sense and I dont get it.
Maybe other people enjoy playing as a girl (For some weird reason) Maybe Female gamers like to play as guys. I really dont know.
