If the guy character looks stupid or really emo, I'll play as a girl. The girls usually wont be ugly.

I regard this as a strange question ... I guess I normally don't play games where you get to chose. I play as a female character when I'm playing Okami or Metroid, and male most of the rest of the time. Until now I wasn't aware there were many games where you could chose, and the ones I do know about I don't play.

now that i think of it, when i can choose, i always play as a female. there's just something about a strong female character that makes me more interested in a story. like the mass effect games, to me shepard is and always will be a woman. it just seems to make more sense with the story to me at least.

kinda like you get to make your almost perfect female that drives the story. someone you could look up to, fall in love with, admire, or what have you. yeah the view is nicer, but thats not the reason i do it. maybe its some weird sub-consious thing, i don't know.
but its more interesting in story terms when whatever the conflict may be can be overcome by some hot little chick who can kick so much ass that you'd never believe it if you didn't see it for yourself.

To fuck with people online
when I made a female spartan character, I would always get a message after each match asking if I was a girl, which I would always promptly reply, yes(lie).
after saying my mic is broken, I would then proceed to get their facebook information and send them the sexual messages they would send me and post them all over their wall.

I love playing as female characters.

It is natural for most guys not to want to watch another guy's ass, so every time I log on to whatever game I'm playing for hours at a time I would prefer to watch a girl shaking her ass instead.

sometimes depends on the game and the character i'm playing. Maybe a second playthrough, thru different eyes, wanting to see what variety the game can offer plot-wise. And maybe in an RPG, if I play a rogue/archer/mage, sometimes I like to use females. And males for fighter types of course. Stereotype, I know, whatever that's how I like it...playing through Dragon Age with an axe-wielding female dwarf just wouldn't do it for me, sorry. Female elf rogue on the other hand..

I don't. I always play as a male character. I am a man, therefor I play as one in a game.

Edit: I'm aware my avatar is a girl :p Doesn't change the fact that I always play as a dude. I just like to look at scene girls :D
Whats the difference between a scene, emo, and goth girl?

I just dont see the differences...
Goth is the classic dark makeup, creepy, satan worshiper. Emo is sad, depressed, dark makeup, tight clothes, often into Hello Kitty and other cartoon characters. Scene girls dress exactly like emo girls only in brighter colors and are happy.

because i'm tired of women in games being objectified and being nothing but glorified sex objects. In rpgs usually woman are touchy feely or overly emotional or have an anoying high pitched voice. I try to play as a more normal woman. yes i'm a dude but still.

Well in addition to the obvious factor that the female lead is sometimes blessed with better voice acting *cough* Mass Effect, Jedi Academy *cough*, it just lets me see a different story. Besides, seeing a tight booty wiggling around on the screen is far more visually appealing than some dude in package hugging armor.

Apologies if that last bit was a bit sexist, but hey, I like chicks.

The answer I usually get to this kind of question is that when you play MMOs, you see your character's back most of the time. If you're going to be spend a lot of time looking at your character's behind, then it might as well be appealing to the player.

Also scene girls are generally immature and annoying as fuck.

I hate these topics; People need to stop farting around the bush and say what they mean.
---
Person A: Why do you play as a female in a video game?

Translation: Rolf lol you're such a pervert! What? Can't find a girlfriend and have to resort to digital ass? Watch some porn, Trollololol!!
---
Person B:
i) I want to experience a unique role-playing experience.
or
ii) if I'm going to state at an ass all day, I'd prefer it be a women's.

Translation (i): I think the female form is sexy and pleasant to look at, and I don't give two flips about 'being' my character. Why the hell are you telling me to watch porn? I'm trying to play an enjoyable video game, and no I don't think that's dependent on projecting myself onto a blank slate that shares my gender. ...Is what I'd like to say, but then the trolls would make fun of me and I have low self-esteem =(.

Translation (ii): I'm really insecure about myself and actually care what people think about my gaming habits. I'm going to try and insinuate that you like looking at men's asses in a desperate attempt to needlessly justify my actions.

Cause honestly, why not?! If you always play as only one type of character, then you're missing half (or more) of what that game is offering you!!

Metroid Games? Sure.
But If I can be a Male, then I will. I don't really enjoy being female characters. I have nothing against that, it's just more comfortable to be a male.

When my mate was making his character in Saints Row 2, I asked why he was going to be a funny looking girl, to which he replied "Look Nat, if I'm going to be stuck seeing my characters ass for most of this game, I want it to be a girls ass I'm looking at."

I think it really spoke for itself though :p
