Why do many core gamers love mainstream games/movies but disparage mainstream music?

The music industry tends to be a little more money grubbing and corrupt than video games or movies, before you point to activision being the devil, they atleast allow important, big time games be more than safe, tired slop that the mainstream music industry has allowed to rise to the top of the charts lately.

I just don't like mainstream music because it doesn't appeal to me. I prefer more powerful music, such as Metal and it's many sub genres. Not a fan of dance music, because it seem like it was created just by pressing random buttons on a keyboard.

To make a good game or movie, you need talent, writers who can spin an yarn, an art department who have an eye for the awesome and programmers, who, uhh... can programme really good.

To make music, all you need is auto tuner. In saying that, I love Lady Gaga but that is because she is talented. Justin Bieber on the other hand gets a bit of paper with words on it shoved in front of his face and attempts to sing about love and having your heartbroken when secretly, he believes all girls still have cooties.
As someone who is as we speak (well actually type), trying to learn the solo from "Echoes", I find that massively irritating. A lot of music theory goes into every song even if the person singing it doesn't have a clue, unless you're a "Three Chords and the truth" kind of person.

Though I lol'd at the second part of that paragraph.
Oh no, don't get me wrong, the people behind it deserve all the credit but what I'm saying is that it is Justin Bieber, the "artist" who requires no talent, in real life, he could sing like a starving walrus but it would make no difference. A shame really. =)

I like what I like regardless of it's popularity with others and the media.
Agreed. It isn't my fault that mainstream music sucks. If a mainstream song comes out that I like, then hooray! If a mainstream game, sucks, well okay then. I just like things based on quality not on overall popularity.

Well, mainstream games are fun, maistream music is not good (usually). Just because something is meainstream doesn't necessarily mean it is bad, but mainstream music tends to be aimed at a younger, female demographic. However, some mainstream stuff (Blink 182, old Green Day) is good.

Mainsteam games usually have something decent about them. Mainsteam music on the other hand tends to suck big time. Games have to be good in someway to get recognized, but alot of musicians only need to make alot of noise and be willing to get sexed up to become "mainstream"

I think it has a lot to do with the amount of effort put into these three categories. If you look at the video game industry, mainstream games have huge development teams that all work very hard on making a game feel realistic (if that's their goal) or at least making it extremely enjoyable, the newest game juggernaut, Red Dead Redemption being the shining example of both.

On the movies front, the movies made these days, while not all fantastic, are made in a way that they try and capture the audience and dazzle them, like Avatar. Or they are just plain good like Inglorious Basterds or Hurt Locker.

Now look at music. Music has become so mass-produced that it is hard to distinguish artists from each other. There is no real independence in music, and usually artists are off of the shelves (or itunes homepage) in a few months. Very few artists stick around, and its much more about money than it ever was. This also has to do with the fact that less BANDS exist, and more "ARTISTS" are prevalent, giving them more time on television, which turns their attention away from actually making music.

Gamers don't like this about the music industry because they are used to their industry working harder to please them. The music industry has taken a dump in the effort its artists put into their music given the increase in electronic music (i.e. vocoders, autotune, etc.). However, increasing technology only betters the gaming industry, making high-budget mainstream games still directed towards the consumer and not the makers.

Because a higher percentage of what the games industry produces is good.

Phrased differently, I don't hate things that are popular, I hate things that are shitty. I like Handlebars by the Flobots because it has a message I agree with and sounds good. I don't like Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, ect. songs because they have no real message and they sound awful. Both are popular, but I just can't stand one of them.

Similarly, I love Call of Duty, Gears of War and Halo, but I can't stand the Resident Evil series. All are popular games series, the difference is that one of them gives me zero enjoyment and the others entertain me.

There is some good and bad in both the modern game and music industries, its just that you have to search out good in the music industry whereas its very easy to find good games.

AMEN BRUTHA

My favourite genre of music is pop, but that doesn't necessarily mean that all I listen to is chart. I do enjoy a lot of chart music, but I listen to all sorts of alternative pop such as Cash Cash, Simian Mobile Disco etc that isn't necessarily 'mainstream'.

Basically mainstream haters can suck my dick. It's become just as much of a trend to declare yourself against the mainstream as it has to be into it. You're not cool just because you don't like listening to chart music, sorry guys!

'Cause its a hell lot easier to be a mainstream gamer/movie-goer than it is to get into mainstream music.
