why do modern online shooters NOT cater for stealth?

I want to say its a balance issue. If stealth were to powerful no one would do anything else.
My approach to stealth is to move slowly and be more perceptive. I also try to anticipate where people may be coming from and be ready when they pop their head out. I find this extremely effective when everyone else seems to be sprinting from a to b(even without the perks). Sorry, I know you probably weren't looking for tips.
exactly if it was balanced properly, im not saying anything drastic like an invisibility suit or the guy in killzone that changes team. just no red crosshairs, better rendering so you characters outline isnt obvious and no stupid messages saying "you cant go prone here" and it would be near perfect

We already have enough camping douchebags in snipers. We dont need more.
read my op, theres a difference between being stealth and camping, if you are being stealth and you stay in one position people will watch killcam and rape you

Because people who want to shoot things play a shooter, and people who want to act stealthy play stealth games. Simple as that. When making a game, you have to cater to audience that is going to play it.

Because stealth has no place in actual war. You either camp with a sniper rifle or you charge head on. Stealth is for pussies, stealth is for noobs.

Graaargh, shooting good! Stealth make me brain hert.

Honestly: I don't really know why. If implemented well it could be really cool.

but being stealthy you still shoot things (just with a silencer)

my point is not that shooters need new mechanics to allow for stealth, just better rendering of camo so it doesnt stand out and not blocking prone. its simple things not anything drastic

most gamers hate stealth sections and stealth fans dont like shooters, so never the twain shall meet.
I beg to differ: I am both a die-hard COD fan and a dedicated Splinter Cell/Hitman player. I can't get enough of the stealth sections in FPSes i think thy're awesome --->(Ghillies in the mist FTW etc). However, I realise that Stealth is hard to implement and balance in FPS Multiplayer. Besides the fact that i have a feeling people would rage about stealth far to much if it was not done properly ('OMG WTF I got killed by some invisible noob') <-----etc
some have said the new splinter cell are not realyl stealth games any more :p i woudlnt know, i mostly said that cause i wanted to say so never the twain shall meet :D
I know what you mean: Conviction was really more of an action orientated stealth game than the others, but i still loved the way the stealth flowed more seemlessly, and focused more on being "The silent predator" than being "The ghost", as the other games have done.

Stealth has no place in real war? I will now sit patiently while the COUNTLESS special forces units from around the world enter your house and assassinate you silently without your family knowing.

I think the main reason is that in the end, it just won't be necessary. Video game lives aren't real lives and people (if you can call them that) would be willing to just charge straight in, hoping to find you by pure luck and surprise, then blow your face off. Online shooters are pretty darn suicidal in their tactics. In order to properly implement stealth, your opponent has to NOT be a total moron... which is rare in this day and age.

Because stealth games are generally about infiltrating and your enemies not being aware of your existance.

That's pretty much impossible in online shooters.

Because it's called a "shooter" not a "stealther". If you want stealth, there's countless games with it tacked on.

you say stealth is for pussies but im my opinion staying at the opposite end of the map and sniping or sitting in a corner waiing for someone to walk into a room is for pussies. stealth is all about sneaking up behind the enemy putting you bollocks on the choping board as one false move could give away your position and once your position is compromised your dead.

lol i already started a rant when i seen the honestly part, yeah if implemented properly it should be an option

Not much use if youre empty handed! Unless youve got the goldeneye chop of doom!

I seem to recall one of the Splinter Cell games having a "mercs vs. spies" multiplayer mode, and I heard it was awesome. The spy from Team Fortress is also a great example of a modern shooter catering to stealth.

Aside from those two examples, however, I'm having a hard time coming up with ways to successfully implement stealth into a modern shooter; seems like more trouble than it's worth for the developers, and balancing issues could become an absolute cloisterfunk if the stealth mechanics are not perfectly integrated.
