why do modern online shooters NOT cater for stealth?

Because most shooter fans are impatient and want blood rivers. Plus doing stealth is too hard, developers prefer doing brown-and-grey FPS games because they are so easy to make and idiots always buy them.
Exactly!

BFBC2, has some Stealth, but if you run and your in the open, you looks like a marshmallow running around..most people don't realize they're being hunted by snipers..

and it's funny to flank the enemey under their nose, with only a Quad, C4, and Good Ol Fashion Driving.

Most of the kills (or so I've experinced is "Stealth Kills", they don't know where I am, but I keep killing them :D

So technically, it does have some Stealth.

Sadly, the reason why there often isn't much attention to stealth tactics in online shooters is that stealth mechanics would be way too easy to abuse in a game like Call of Duty (in fact, the few perks that are dedicated to stealth are already abused to Hell and back by a lot of players).

Just because a developer intends for some players to play a stealth game cautiously and thoughtfully doesn'tmean that everyone will stick to their vision, some players will notice a way to exploit stealth abilities (along with any other abilities) in the game for an easy victory (which is what a lot of players want at the end of the day).

If they did take stealth further then you would quite likely end up having many players getting pissed off about the fact that they could never find anyone else in the game and are always getting killed from behind/concealment (and it would almost certainly go from true stealth into camping and sniping in a short time).

Having the game be primarily dedicated to open, noisey firefights helps keep the game simple, easy to learn and fun (and for the most part, fair), if someone does manage to accomplish stealth, then good for them.

It's hard to do stealth without overpowering/underpowering it. The spy in TF2 is a good example of how to do it.
but i think its too hard to do a stealth online shooter in a fps...it just doesn't add up right, if i cant see where im stealthing, how do i know if im blending in or if the lighting effects aren't making me stick out like a sore thumb?
yeah its a tough problem, you should be able to tilt your head so you can see if you match your surroundings. most of the time im my opinion its to do with rendering as the backgrounds and character models are rendered differently they stand out when put together

Because most gamers seem to want to look their enemies in the "eyes". There is enough whining about snipers as it is...

Halo Reach has a new active camo suit ability, that spams your opponents motion tracker and allows you to sneak up behind them, tap there shoulder, and then stab them in the face. If that isn't stealth in an online shooter to to you, your either trolling or deluded.
That isn't really stealth scince it's not your role or vital to your survivial(Such as the Team Fortress 2 spy) it is more of a slight advantage. Stealth would also pertain to having some concequence when found out.

Stealth involves a lot of immersion and patience. The two things that go against what your average adrenaline-hog is after.

Because stealth has no place in actual war. You either camp with a sniper rifle or you charge head on. Stealth is for pussies, stealth is for noobs.

Graaargh, shooting good! Stealth make me brain hert.

Honestly: I don't really know why. If implemented well it could be really cool.
you say stealth is for pussies but im my opinion staying at the opposite end of the map and sniping or sitting in a corner waiing for someone to walk into a room is for pussies. stealth is all about sneaking up behind the enemy putting you bollocks on the choping board as one false move could give away your position and once your position is compromised your dead.

lol i already started a rant when i seen the honestly part, yeah if implemented properly it should be an option
I've succeeded at stealth in MW2 a couple of times. I lie in the bushes with a ghillie and a couple silent weapons with heartbeat sensors and silencers, and wait for people to run straight by me, as they always do. Pop them a couple times, lie in the bushes again, repeat. It's funny how many times you can kill the same people this way, and their idiocy and frustration is the best part.

Please Go and Play TF2 as a spy then make sure you post to tell everybody how wrong you were.

you could also mention BFBC2 which can be played with an element of stealth, it still lacks prone and the spot button is rediculous
You pretty much ninja'd me right there in the OP.

I frequently use stealth in BFBC2.

For example, sneak to the M-com, plant 6xC4, drop sensor, arm charge, run and hide, detonate C4 when someone attempts to disarm, success!

Prone, while it would be very useful, is not entirely necessary. And if you're good, the enemy won't get a chance to spot you.

modern online shooters don't bother catering for stealth-oriented play because it is unnecessary. games like MW2 are twitch shooters, games that rely mostly on reflexes to gain the upper hand. in cases like MW2, it is more effective to just keep moving and keep killing everything in sight to gain the win. if you want a game that requires an element of surprise and sneakiness I recommend rainbow six

TF2 notwithstanding, I'd say it's because we're somewhat of an impatient lot. We want to see the other guy dead, and..sometimes we prefer it be done in the biggest, loudest way possible. He brings a knife, you bring a gun. A very big gun that makes things explode.

I do plenty of stealth when I play MW(1 not 2)... its easy; just take a silenced weapon and UAV jammer as a perk, and poof! stealth.
