I've noticed this alot and even on this very site that is supposto be understanding when it comes to games.

Am gonna be using Final fantasy as my basis cause am one of the biggest fans who thinks every game is perfect.
FF13 has garnered so much hate on this site when personnly its my favorite. All i gotta ask is why did you spend 60$ dollars to get a game you knew you wernt gonna like. All the info about the game was out there way before release. Hell i imported it and was playing it in december. There was so much footage from japan on it translations of the story everything. so why do we get all these haters? Whyed they get it in the first place?

Same thing happened with X-2. People knew it was about the girls they knew everything but they bought and complained.

People knew Starcraft 2 WINGS OF LIBERTY was only having the terran story.

I dont understand gamers anymore its just most illogical. Does anyone know why they do this?

Well, there's what I call the Ed Wood theory, that they play them 'ironically' and make fun of them Unskippable- or Mystery Science Theater-style.

But that probably only applies to unbelievably bad games, like QWOP.

Counter-point: Why would someone who is looking forward to a game ruin it for themselves by reading the story early?

If you're looking forward to a game, learning absolutely everything about it before you even play it takes a lot of the fun and all of the discovery out of the experience, even if the game does turn out to be good. If it's bad, yeah, you risk being disappointed, but being disappointed by the occassional bad game is way more logical than reading all of the spoilers to preemptively ruin every good game you play for yourself.

I agree that some group of people would want to be surprised by the game, Legion. That's fine. It's even fine if they complain about it after the fact. But my gut instinct is, that isn't the people yelling the loudest about how bad a game is. Those people tend to be the ones writing the 3 page long essay [http://www.oppapers.com] rants and watching all the youtube clips, in my experience.
The best Facebook status [http://www.postrandomonium.com]. I guarantee it.

It's not my fault, I didnt know I was goint to hate Fable II as much as I did. However, I didnt come back to part 3?

However I patiently await my chance to play FFXIV, and I promise you I will not hate it.

I believe it falls under the rule: You can't ***** about shit unless you have played and finished the shit first and thus have first hand experience with the shit.

The way I see it, the hatred stems from three different groups.

1: People that didn't EXPECT to hate it upon purchase. Meaning, they were a long time fan of the series prior to that particular game, and was horrendously disappointed by the game for whatever reason, which if they are one of these people, you'll find that reason will be stated over and over again as more people ask about it.

2: People who actually want to know why they hate it: This is the kind of people that I would like to debate games to. They hate the game, but are willing to give the game a try in order to be better informed in discussions about said game. They have better grievances to discuss, and as such, provide a better argument. This does not guarantee resolved viewpoints in the end, though. Fair warning.

3: People who never bought the game: That's about it. They may have read about it, looked at countless reviews, and possibly even skimmed through a plot synopsis or two, but the game itself was never acquired, and they complain about the information they've gathered.

Naturally, there are other things to consider (bandwagon, wanting to be the "cool" one and standing out, or just plain trolling), but that's mainly how I see it.

Bad games are fun, because they have some thing about it interesting to make it enjoyable. Example, me and some friends played ET on the atari and had fun with how bad it was.

Hope.

Hope that the sequel will be better then the first one.

Hope that it won't be the same shit over and over again.

As was the case with Just Cause 2. I played the first one and didn't really enjoy it. Only reason I brought it is because I saw someone on my steam friends list playing it a lot and got it on a sale. My hope was crushed. It was the same shit over and over again, just on a grander scale.

I have no idea. I knew that I'd hate New Vegas. But I still bought, and even pre-ordered, the damn thing.

The change is tone for the game wasn't enough. It was nice, but the game still had horrid core gameplay. Shooting is still ass, and the game still wants you to dump all of your early level skill points into Lockpick.

These are the only people you should listen to when it comes to hatin' on games.

Personally, I buy the new FF games because I WANT them to be good. I remember the good old days of FF I-IV, and hell, even FF VIII and IX. I just wish SE could get back to that, and actually write an interesting story for once.

Doesn't that put you in group one of Magnatek's post? People that didn't expect to hate the game but did after playing it? Why are those opinions invalid?

I've never bought a game I knew I was going to hate. Who are these people you speak of? I've bought games I knew I wasn't going like as much as it's predecessors if that counts, but I don't think it does. Example FF13 (oh hey, whatdoyouknow). And even then, most of what I didn't like was really just a lot of little things... and Hope

I never said they WEREN'T invalid. I just said that they'll be said over and over until it's nearly lost all meaning. There's still a chance it is a valid reason after that, but after hearing "that one reason" countless times, you may not want to hear it again in detail. This is just with my experience, though. I've heard the same reasons for a lot of games (dumbed down for console, quickscope, and 15-min long cutscenes to name a few) from multiple people, so getting tired of them comes fairly quickly.

Sometimes a game is inside your favorite genre and can't be easily ignored. This is why I continued buying id games long past the point of insanity. I only bought Doom 3 new so it wasn't that bad, but I always hoped they'd recapture the old Doom magic.

And I know one day I'll try another Halo game, which I pretty much know won't end well. But it will be a cheap one.

generally if its a game I have seen vids for or read reviews and been sceptical i will either wait untill its in the pre-owned bin and 50% off or borrow ot from someone who has it. either way it saves me wasting £40 on bad games (and p.s never trust OXM for reviews - absolutely useless!)

Because of that warm fuzzy feeling people get when they get to yell and rant about how bad something is?

I'd say most times it can be chalked up to a lack of pattern recognition. People may know that, say, movie based video games generally suck, but they sometimes buy them anyway because they hope "it will be better" this time around, even though it rarely is.

With myself, the idea is that "gee this game is on sale, and even though its a genre I hate I'll get it anyway because my tastes might change and it wont necessarily be on sale in the future" even though I have over a hundred games in my backlog that I've never played.
