Because if it's a fiver i'm buying it. Any game is worth a fiver. I got Lost Planet for a fiver, still haven't played it, but I've heard it's awful.

I don't think anyone buys games they think they're going to hate. I think they might buy games they hope they're going to like because a friend has recommended them, or they might buy games they hope to like because the game they actually wanted is out of stock or too expensive, but I honestly have a hard time believing that anyone buys a game with the mindset of "wow, this is going to suck". (Possible exception made for the Game Masochist, who has their equivalent in movies and books and such, who loves things BECAUSE they're bad.)

Sometimes I do it just because I feel it'd be funny to buy the horribly bad game and interesting to see just how bad it is. It's why I bought Alpha Protocol, but I can't help but think that impulse buying played a massive role in it.

I believe it falls under the rule: You can't ***** about shit unless you have played and finished the shit first and thus have first hand experience with the shit.
This, this right here. Whenever I tried to argue why a game is bad that I haven't played for myself only saw a playthrough off, people always throw it in my face that I haven't played it so I can't possible know.

I have no idea why people buy things they're going to hate. And neither will any of you. There are so many crossed opinions on the reasons why here that I'm developing the notion that it is a crapshoot, no true rhythm or pattern to the idea. Well actually, the guy linking Tv Tropes is probably close on the money, though somebody else did the research. Still, I don't think this question is properly answerable since I have no idea why people hate games that others loved, aside from a question of taste...which is in the eye of the beholder again and therefore also a crapshoot.

I have NEVER bought a game thinking, "Wow, I can't wait to get those home, play it for an hour and not enjoy it, then ***** about how I wasted my hard earned money".

However, I have bought games thinking, "You know, I don't think I'll like these games a lot, but they've gotten very good reviews, so I think I'll give them a chance to surprise me".

Examples of games I gave a chance and failed me: Final Fantasy X, Assassins Creed, GTA4.

FF13 has garnered so much hate on this site when personnly its my favorite. All i gotta ask is why did you spend 60$ dollars to get a game you knew you wernt gonna like.
I'm a fan of Final Fantasy and thought number 13 was going to be good.

That is, up until I actually played it.

Well, for instance sometimes I completely hate something, but I choose to try it out just to see if I hate the product, or the media/fanbase behind it. I try to play it so that I can find out if I truly dislike it or not.

That's why when I said I disliked twilight, I watched the movie first before concluding that decision, or for instance, world of warcraft and Halo.

I wasn't surprised by WoW and decided I dislike the game.

Meanwhile, I tried Halo, and decided "meh, its an ok shooter, but I can't stand the aspects of the game and its storyline" in the end focusing more of that dislike towards halo media instead of the games themselves.

You can't really dislike something without ever try... Well that's BS nevermind. You -can- say you dislike something, but your point will not be taken as valid unless you have tried it out.

I've never bought a game I knew I was going to hate. Who are these people you speak of? I've bought games I knew I wasn't going like as much as it's predecessors if that counts, but I don't think it does. Example FF13 (oh hey, whatdoyouknow). And even then, most of what I didn't like was really just a lot of little things... and Hope
I don't recall going out to buy a game I knew I would hate. The problem comes from loving the first of a series or other games by a company and then hoping that their next offering will be as enjoyable.

When you find out that the gameplay got completely changed, or simply all the things you felt made the previous game great got yanked out of the game, it is too late. Then you visit the forums and describe bitterly your disappointment in plunking down your hard earned cash for a lemon of a game.

Sometimes though, I have given a series a second chance to win me back (FF series for example) in which I DO go in with open eyes knowing that they did disappoint me in a previous game. But since companies like Square-Enix are known to constantly attempt to change and improve their games, it can be a worthwhile gamble. That is to say, one bad game may not spoil the bunch. But that is a rare gamble for me.

well that depends on which Lost planet your bought. If its the first lost planet game you got yourself a pretty good game if you got the 2nd lost planet well you bought a piece of shit.
Lost Planet 1. Even if it was 2 I'd like it. It can't be bad enough to not be worth $5
