Why do people get so annoyed about multi-platform games?

I was reading an article written by some bloke who claims that a Final Fantasy 7 remake is all but ineviatable and cites that a site called "Playstation Lifestyle" has inside information that SquareEnix will be announcing their intentions(for those interested I checked the site and no such thing was mentioned as far as I could see).

Now lets not get into whether or not Squeenix are/are not/should/should not remake FFVII. The interesting thing here is that the writer of the article then lists a number of conditions that he would ideally like the remake to be. One of these, and I believe this is verbatim, is "KEEP IT ON THE FUCKING PLAYSTATION 3!".

Now I don't understand this sort of rabid aggression. I could understand it if it were to be announced that it wasn't going to be on the PS3, but why get so angry that more people are going to play an (arguably) great game? As long as you get to play it why not share the joy? Why not band together as gamers to share the things we love rather than ostracize each other with needless aggression and hate? Can anoyone help me to clarify why some people feel this way?

THe PS3 is sucking life right now, due to 360 excusives and Sony lost alot of licenses. FFVII remake (dear lord I hope it's true!) should be all consoles, or at least 360/PS3.

while this argument only works for certain games it is due to the fact that if the game is a multi-platform then it is usually designed for one system and ported to the other an example of this would be lost planet. This argument doesn't work for the dipshit you are mentioning due to all the main final fantasy's being designed with the ps3 in mind and then ported to the 360. But there are examples like bioshock where it is released on some platforms which were the pc and xbox but then about a year later released on another system with added content that actually is equal if not better then the previous versions. Of course the guy that you are mentioning is probobly a mindless sony fanboy and realize that I am while not a sony fanboy a person who still owns only that and a pc and actually has all sony consoles with the exception of the psx so if I am calling somebody a mindless sony fanboy then they probobly are one. I don't mind multi platforms myself like the new final fantasy being announced for the xbox except when the game is nothing but a crappy port as I mentioned earlier.

Because when people buy a console they want to believe that they have the best one out there, and they do this by hating on other consoles, trying to convince others to do the same, and expecting a lineup of exclusive games to justify their purchase over the purchase of any other gaming machine. For this reason, you see things like PS3 fanboys crying over FFXIII becoming multiplatform, which I believe was what influenced the quote in your post.

Its just something Playstation had over (not in my opinion, but what ever...) the 360, now it long longer has it.
Your reading a Playstation magazine, of course they are going to whinge when something only they had was shared, it would be like having a-lot of money, then after a long time Mr Mon E Bags gives the shares the money between you and your friends.
Plus, and this is no certainty, they were probably fanboys, but you can't be sure about these things...

I never understood his either...

Some time ago, I remember some dude on another site going absolutely batshit crazy when they announced Tekken 6 was going to be released on the 360. He went off on some massive rant about how "Tekken is a Playstation only series, and it should be kept that way". Then, somebody reminded him about Tekken Advance on the GBA, and he promptly shut up.

I think the reason for a lot this rabid fanboyism is mainly financial. The individual has made a large financial investment into their console of choice and as such feels the need to defend it with terminal intensity.

That being said, I think this argument only works between 360 and PS3 owners. I don't think there is any real explanation for the phenomena of Nintendo fanboys/girls..

Meh...dont remake FF7...let it be.

It just becomes degrading to see that Square was once a great J-rpg developer is now reduced to get their name big again is a remake from FF7....

Also I think that PS3 players are afraid that Mr.Gates will buy off all of their iconic franchises like he did with alot of DLC.

I only have a 360, because I am to poor to get both.....I like multi-platform release game because then I can talk about games I have with the few friends that have a PS3 only (most have both, lucky SOBs). I hate when people talk about MGS4 because I want to play it and probably won't get a chance for at least another year, but in all fairness most of them hate with when I talk about gears......

I sincerely hope that this video was a clever and subversive satire on rabid fanboyism. I simply refuse to believe anyone could be that much of a stereotype.
Also did he say that SquareEnix have committed public "Sudoku"? No wonder it amounts to social suicide to mention gaming in a non-gaming social function when people like that are around.

I'm going to try to stay on topic and answer the question. But in doing so it seems fit to reference the FF series.

Up to FF12 (excluding FF11, doesn't count) each major release has been released, at least originally, on one console only. This allowed Squaresoft/Square-Enix to focus on that console alone and "harness the power" of it, to coin a phrase.

When they announced last year that it was going to the 360 as well, I was disappointed. It was understandable, from a financial perpective, but it meant that they had to develop for two consoles (I believe I heard they were developing for PS3 first, then 360 - but this would still require to keep the architecture 360 friendly).

And this is true of all multi-platform releases. I don't care about franchises or where they go. FF was an Nintendo institution first and foremost. CoD and GTA were primarily PC games at first. This sort of thing happens over time. What I don't like is that diggling idea in the back of my mind that the game I'm playing could have been better if is was exclusive. (Of course this isn't always true. CoD4 is better than Haze).

As you may have guessed, I'm "white enough to afford all the consoles" so multi-platform releases hurt me more than anyone (not that anyone would care).

yeah, but exclusive titles dont hurt you at all, its fair enough on the whole - the fact that you can play every game far outshines any possible ill effects of multi platform

True. I didn't think I'd get many agreeing with me, I just wanted to chuck in my two cents.

I have no problem with games that are announced as multi-platform from the square one, like CoD4 for example. It's when a game is suddenly announced a change or addition of console I get a bit disappointed.

This might all stem from Far Cry 2, a game I had been looking forward to since it was announced. Then they mentionned it's coming to consoles and I thought, well OK they probably need the sales. But when the game came out it felt stripped, it felt "consolised". That game was a huge disappointment to me, so much so that it's made me keep a skeptical eye on those type of announcements since.
