Griefing usually just makes it annoying for everyone else. It's not just about stats, it's about having fun with the game, and griefers stop that from happening. Like L4D griefers who deliberately steal all the health and deliberatey die so they cause a problem for the other players. It stops the game being fun.

No one likes griefers because they just give you, well, grief. Their only motivation for what they do is to piss you off.

Like teamkilling, or betraying, or all the other stuff that makes multiplayer all that more fun?

Yeah, why WOULD you hate griefers?
Some of it's funny. Team killing is kinda boring and stale at this point, but other types of griefing, like the stuff in those Roomba videos is pretty hilarious.

Griefing is only fun to the person being irritating and it ruins the game for everyone else. There's no excuse for it. Wanting to play a game the way it was meant to be played isn't "taking it too seriously", it's a reasonable expectation for a $60 purchase.

Its mostly just the moments irritation. We're out here minding our own business killing defensless little animals when suddenly some guy thats higher level than us comes and one shots us.

Heck, maybe most of the time it isnt greifers, perhaps its members of PETA trying to send gamers a message about killing animals for our own "Quest" Objectives :p

While I can understand monkeying about, I tend to consider it different than griefing. Monkeying about is consensual messing around.

I will use Red vs Blue to demonstrate. The team effort needed to create Red vs Blue is what I would call Monkeying About. They aren't playing the game but they are all having fun. Keyword, ALL.

Griefing would the asshole trying to stop everybody from playing the game when they want to play the game. Griefing is basically somebody deciding to be an asshole and fuck with other people's experience. Person A didn't log in to amuse you. They logged in to play the damn game unless otherwise stated. Ergo, if you go out of your way to fuck with them or stop them from playing, you're an ass and the reason I avoid multiplayer.

I loved playing on Diablo 2 battlenet. However, after having to kill so many assholes who would randomly come in to try and jump me, it almost ruined any desire to play. As it is, I had to give up Battlenet for a while and found my stuff was all gone. The fact that somebody is having to ask Why we hate griefing only illustrates why I am not going to bother.

I don't mind people doing small things like throw flashbangs or waste reasources, I can get over those things...

But when people deliberately try to ruin the game experience, like teamkilling, constant trolling, and trash-talk..... that's when we call in the mighty Banhammer (Or lesser punishments, depending on the severity of the crime...)

They don't hate people, they just love to see people squirm. Without people, there would be no griefers.

I can understand trolls. They're hate based. But griefing is funny sometimes.
Griefing is never funny for the person being griefed, or the other people in the game. The only people who get a kick out of it are the griefer and their friends. It's a disgustingly anti-social action that just ensures that games aren't fun at all.

To all griefers, if you want to be annoying, by all means, do it. But don't be coward and use gaming as medium, instead, do it right to my face. See how that works out when you're actually responsible for your actions, hmmm?
I had that once :D One of my mates kept killing me in Halo 2's co-op, so I punched him in the face and still wont play games with him :D

If I could, I'd do it to EVERY PERSON that did it to me. I just can't afford the air fare :(
Really? And that's nopt worse than griefing?
Considering that it was the result of a constant harassment... No, it isn't. It was provoked and consistently provoked. If I was to sit beside you on the bus and poke your side, over and over and over again, eventually you would do something about it.

Same deal, just mental, which can actually be MORE frustrating since you can't just change seats like in the aforementioned poking example. So it is a constant annoyance. People have breaking points and if you push long enough, you earn what you get.

Well, think about it in terms of a hypothetical....

You and some friends are playing a game of kickball. How fun!

But wait! All of a sudden, three guys run up to you, take your ball, and start throwing it random places (sometimes even at you).

When you ask them nicely to stop, one of them punches you in the chest.

So! How would you feel if you were in this situation?

It depends. If its during a serious match, its annoying. But if you're just out for fun, griefing is really fun

Griefers annoy other people to have fun, it's no surprise that everyone, probably including other, off-duty, griefers, hates them.

I really don't think it is. If he's immature enough to continue griefing after presumably being warned (I doubt it was just a punch with no warning), then he fully deserved what he got.

Why do people think they can react with violence if they've been insulted? Even the worst insult in the world is just a group of words.
That's dumb. Insults are more then just clusters of words. They can be personal attacks on someone, and aren't nice to have to endure if they keep up.

That said, I wouldn't personally have used violence. I don't actually like physical violence.

So they team killed you. Why would you try to react with anything other than team kill them (or join with them and try to take down all of the friendly NPCs)? An eye for an eye leaves the world blind, so I'm guessing a leg for an eye is much worse.
Well, that philosophy never made any sense to me. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but leaving the eye means only the griefers (in this case) can see. A leg for an eye is something I consider to actually be more appropriate for this situation.

Games are for fun, but sometimes people like to take them seriously. And it's really irritating when you try and do that when someone comes along and messes up what you're trying to do.

Because most people getting griefed don't get any fun out of it?
Because griefers are selfish?
Because some people play games for a feeling of accomplishment and griefers interfere with their goals worse than noobs ever could?
I think it's perfectly valid to hate griefers, even though I haven't had any contact with them in years. Last time I had to put up with those idiots was when I still played TacOps some... uh, six years back or something?

this. griefing is funny but hackers can go die in a fire IRL.
