Why do people hate on multi-disc games?

Like one guy said: "Today, you chose those pants, because they were your favorite. That doesn't mean you hate the ones you didn't wear."

Same with me. Like meatloaf said, it breaks immersion, and is generally annoying, as I play a game to enjoy it the game, not stand up, go to the console, and swap a disk.

And did you really got more bang for the buck from Lost Odyssey than from Fallout 3?

You get a little bit of exercise when you have to change the disk (that is if you have the console far from where you sit).
Sorry, but that is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.
It can't be that far, because then you wouldn't see the TV, and the controller wouldn't respond, and you get the same exercise from farting as you get from walking to your console.

doesn't bother me. people may say it breaks immersion but so does stopping generally, no game i've played that requires more than one disk needs to be changed right in the middle of something, it's always between chapters or something. if a game is truly immersive, you should be sucked back into it as soon as you change the disk, as though nothing happened.

Err.. wait? Disk swapping? I left that behind in 1999. Even Baldur's Gate had the option to write everything to disk so you wouldn't have to swap. At 2.6GB, that was quite a bit to put on your drive all at once o_O

There is no excuse for disk swapping these days, not with 1 TB drives out on the market for a little less than 100.

Likely a bit more than that, but it is still exercise (and a bad excuse but an excuse none the less) and I know a few people who have there console over by their 40+ inch television so they could literally sit several meters away from the console.

So you want to buy a game for about 130 bucks or more just so you don't have to swap disks?

I bought Blue Dragon cause I felt like playing an RPG and when I heard that this was 3 discs long, it blew my mind and I thought I'd be playing it forever. Problem is the game sucked...

But anyways, I hated the way they packaged it. It was in a normal 360 game case and all three discs were just stacked on top of each other. But other than that, I don't mind it.

I guess the only way it WOULD bother me is if I was on the third disc and I had a quest and I need to go back to my home town and that meant I had to put the first disc back in. That would get annoying as hell but...I don't think that ever existed... so..yay?

I just misunderstood that. I'm sorry. I already edited my post.

The reason why multi-discs became frowned upon was because it made the CD cases larger. Personally, I didn't mind changing the disc once or twice or even 4 times, when playing, because there was a lengthy period between changes.

As disc-media matured and programming languages and compression techniques improved, companies started being able to fit all their games on one disc, and touted it as a feature. But now, gamers almost EXPECT a game to fit all on one disc, meaning that developers have this bizarre notion that their games HAVE to fit on a single disc. This means that a developer will start to cut things and take short cuts in order to fit everything on one DVD or Blu-ray disc.

And that's sad. Developers should not fear having to put things on multiple discs. I would hate it if a game didn't turn out as good as it could, all because they had to cut things to fit it on one disc. Seriously, changing discs is not difficult. Just open the tray, pop the disc in, close the tray. Takes all of 10 seconds, probably not even that.

Changing disks is about the most immersion-shattering thing you can do.
I'd disagree with that, swapping disks only pauses immersion, besides, after playing eversion ive realised immersion is overated.

hate on threads are awesome. Thanks for bringing more to the forums. and on multi-disc games srsly?

Well I can't think of a single Blu-Ray multi disc game and I'm wondering how many DVD multi-disc titles there are (no I'm not considering PC games in this assessment, even then)

So bonus points for the passe subject material.
I'm going to assume you were being sarcastic. >_>

Blu-ray isn't so much of a problem, I'm thinking more along the lines of DVD. FF XIII in particular. I hear "Oh, you're going to have to switch discs when you walk into that store!" a lot when talking about the 360 version. But honestly, square has always been really good about not doing something like that. The entire game world is on each disc, just the FMV were what made you switch discs. (I'm thinking about FF VIII here)

I really don't mind them. Like you said, more bang for your buck. As for the immersion argument, who cares! In the end, your getting a longer game. If you love the game THAT much, why let a 30 second annoyance get in the way? In fact, I don't know how you can be that immersed in a game. Yes, I can get into my games a bit, but when you scrolling though menus in an RPG, I don't see how you can be that immersed.
But my hat gives me plus 5 PER! Just like in real life!

whats all this about hating changing disks??
I LOVED getting to the end of the next disk in an RPG. Final Fantasy VII is a good example here. The sense of acheivement when you get to the next disk is just great! Who cares about immersion here? If you are immersed enough changing disks simply means the start of yet another major part of the characters adventures.

I have to admit I find it more annoying on PC games than console games... On pc games when you're installing a game, it usually takes a hell of a long time, so consequently you'll want to leave it running while you go off and do something else. But when there's multiple disks, your forced to check up on it every so often so that you know when to put the next disk in...

Atleast with console games the disk change usually comes after the massive shockers, plus your usually near the console anyway, and once youve put the disk in, it usually loads up within seconds and you can get back to playing. xD

I think storylines which arent finished in one game are more annoying, pay however much money it is, to find out you have to wait another year and pay another god knows how much to see the story through to the end, even though it could of easily fit on one game. Yes I'm looking at you dotHack.

From what I've heard so far seems like most of the multi disk games are for Sony. That's why I'm a Xbox/Nintendo guy and that's another reason for me to say Sony sucks.

They make a joke about this in MGS4.
"Hold on Snake," Says Otacon. "It's time to change the discs."
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Wait...we're on the Playstation 3. It's dual layered. What an age we live in."
"Damn it Otacon, get a grip!"
The five minute load screens weren't much of an improvement.
