I don't find many people who hate people who play WoW. I find a lot of people who hate WoW as a game though. Personally I find it fun for a few months of each year, and for the rest I just feel no need to play. I've been playing off and on since the game came out. It gets way to repetitive if you play every day for hours. But I've found it's a really good game to play when there is nothing new out or you just sort of need to kill some time.

You can comfort yourself that there's less people that hate WoW than those 11 million subscribers.

Besides, it's a game. It's a very addicting game.

WoW is the iPod of MMO's. Tell people you're playing an MMORPG, and mostly likely the only part of that acronym they'll get is game. Tell them you're playing World of Warcraft, and every negative thing they've heard about any MMO comes to mind. So it's not just WoW being hated, it's all massively multiplayer games.

If gaming is still a counter-culture hobby because of the perceived stereotype of gamers being reclusive shut-ins with no access to natural light, MMO's are the apotheosis of that argument.
It doesn't help that an awful lot of MMO players do take the whole thing far too seriously. I know a number of people who maintain the bare minimum of social contact required to be legally considered alive, and spend the rest of their time on WoW or... actually, just WoW, in this case.

Watch that episode of southpark about WoW, then you'll understand.

Edit: It's called "Make Love, Not Warcraft". Season 10 episode 8.

I never got the whole WoW addiction.
Every like 5-6 months or so. I get the urge to go out and hop on a private server and play for a couple weeks.
But then I get bored, it's repetitiveness starts to grate on my nerves..
Then half a year later I repeat the process.
Same, except I stopped because all of the updates were making it a ***** to download, and WoWscape got raped by blizzard.

I dislike/hate most WoW players because they think that WoW is something new, original never before seen type of game. While its nothing more then a clone of all previous mmo's. Many of said previous mmo's being better on many points.

WoW is overrated.

Because the people who play it are devoted enough to form a community, and communities are usually acceptable targets for humor, as they're removed from those making and listening to the jokes.

In my experience, because mainly people just quote what others say ( eg "cool" kids) and of course there are stereotypes ( Eg fat wow nerds).

I personally have no problem with the people I tried it and disliked which is why I don't like play it. The reason people hate it is because of the horror stories, personal reasons, or just because they want to look down on people and feel superior.

People hate WoW either because it's popular or it takes up so much of your time. I don't hate WoW but the later reason seems like the most reasonable to me. Hating things because they're popular, however, is just trying to be cool. :p

Mostly because the game isn't anything special. It's not the first of it's kind, nor has it done anything better aside from being a viral hit.

It's biggest success was coming into the market at a critical time. The time when playing a MMO was starting to become a social acceptance, and when MMO's were becoming capable technologically. There were only a few notable 3D world MMO's when WoW made it's splash.

People, in general, just see the game for what it is. An addictive monstrosity that doesn't innovate anything at all, aside from addictive policies to keep people logged. The only real thing keeping the game together is it's viral success and core audience.

People with these sorts of opinions are normally much more loud and feel their views must be shared with everyone else. Most normal people who don't hate those who play WoW do not feel the need to defend their point of view and thus rarely make posts or comments about why people who play WoW are for the most part completely normal and deserve no form of hatred from the general gaming community.

As per why those select few people have some form of hate towards WoW players, I'm guessing its due to their inability to find pleasure in the game itself, and thus their anger is misplaced onto those who do find pleasure in WoW or other MMORPG games.

I'm sure there are a few people who actually hate WoW players purely because they play WoW and not because they find fault with the game, but this anger is much harder to explain and goes towards group think and racism more then anything else.

I don't hate people who play WoW. I just don't like the game because Im not to keen on paying per month instead of a flat 60ish bucks for the game, that and I'd rather not take the chance that I'd get addicted toi it

haha there's like sooo many reasons, besides people don't HATE people who play WoW, its more that they hate WoW, but here are just a few reasons to dislike WoW:
1a) Both graphically and gameplay wise (definately at the start missions) WoW is inferior to most other MMO's 1b) This is only more annoying because so many people play it purely because it has been around for so long, their friends play it (and won't give up because they have high lvl characters or virtual "friends" who play it) so they play it too, and so the cycle continues, 2)It sucks people in, and slowly but surely errodes their life outside WoW, i didn't believe it until one of my friends, who at GCSE (high/comprehensive school lvl grades) got mostly A's, has now totally failed all his AS levels (and been forced out of college), primarily because now he plays WoW all night, every night. 3) As my friend as a perfect example, people who play WoW excessivly tend to stop going out, or to social occassions, even after specific invitation, preferring instead to play WoW. 4) WoW i think acts as a "gateway drug" for other similar computer based activities, such as text roleplaying online, excessive porn browsing, eating and drinking energy drinks constantly at the computer, all to excess and all reducing real life socialisation time. 6) constantly playing at ones computer leads to being overwieght and unhealthy, 7) eventually lacking social abilities to interact with non-WoW players (as differences in speaking (leeeroy jenkins etc) and having less in common)

Btw i'm not saying that this definately happens with WoW players, but from personal experience and what i've seen and heard else where is quite typical

Okay, so please don't just post back to this with "Because they are lame." or "Because WoW is for fags". Not what I am looking for.

Anyway! I just started playing say.... Five days ago and I don't see much diffrence between it and any other MMO's. I mean, MMO's are a bit nerdy yes but it seems people really hate, or look down on the people who play it. Plus there are tons of shows like South Park who do spoofs about it and how everyone who play it suck. I'm not really getting it though. We all play games but wht makes playing WoW even more nerdy?
let me give you another one: "because they're addicts!"
