I liked RA and loved RA2, but RA3 just didn't do it for me.
A couple things I really liked, such as the cutscenes and the final Soviet Mission, which was a wonderful Homage to the first Allied mission in RA2. And of course, the doomsday laser in Mt. Rushmoore.
The actors were fun to watch too.
Unfortunatly, the game had a bunch of things that just killed it for me:
1. The game went a little too much towards the silly side at times and the missions suffered for it. Particulary for the Japanese. Come on. Destory a bunch of Soviet Statues? Take over TV stations in LA? That's the best they can come up with? Which leads into....
2. The Japanese feel tacked on and horribly gimicky. Sure, all the vehicles are transformers, but that makes them fragile as hell and it takes far too long to switch to a different mode to counter a given attack. Oh, and their air defense sucks horribly, particularly in the face of the fact both the Allies and Soviets both have Heavy Bomber Units.
3. The game balance feels off. Screw the Cyrocopters and the fricken Ice beam. Give me the fricken satillite drop/magnetic satilite any day. The allies have all sorts of high tech stuff that freezes and shrinks and such. The Soviets just put more guns on theirs, and are better for it.
4. I really got to like the Red Alert Universe and then...they pretty much throw the entire thing out the window. I'd rather see more Yuri then the Empire, frankly. At least his gimmicky units were mostly useful. And the ending of Yuris revenge more or less hinted at a sequel...that apparently won't happen now.
5. I know it's nickpicky, but the Cuba mission annoyed the crap out of me. For one, it's pretty much the same mission as the Cuba mission in RA2 and it's pretty retarded. Okay, so the soviets have finally developed Nukes. Which they then strap onto...giant, slow moving blimps and if even one leaves the map, you fail.
Okay, let's put this in perspective. The Soviets already have shown that they have rocket technology, even in the new universe. And now they have nukes. Instead of mating the two, which would seem logical, they use giant, slow moving blimps....crossing miles and miles of ocean to an allied target....which probably has advance warning. But apparently the allied air force/navy is so useless it can't shoot down a blimp over the ocean because it...got away.
I know the game isn't exactly heavily grounded in reality, but when the whole premise is that stupid and you can fail just because of that stupid premise, I call BS.
