I think it's unusual that people seem to look at RA2 as a funny game.
See, I do, I always have. "I don't give a wooden nickel about your legacy!" is just classic (Never mind General Vladimir and the hotub). But it was just funny enough. Much of the humour came from the larger than life American capitalism and Soviet totalitarianism. Yuri was the obvious villian with some crazy tech. But then the crazy tech wasn't that standard - most tanks were still tanks, most infantry still infantry. Stuff like weather control you could play without, and even mind control wasn't that prevelant

Where's Hitler?

In the first game, Einstein invents the chronosphere so he can go back in time to kill Hitler and prevent WW2 from ever happening. In doing so, the Soviets are allowed to become a major power. But hold on, if Einstein is dead, who kills Hitler?
I think it time travel-or Einstein and the soviets method of time travel works by creating a parallel universe where the changed time always was, for example, in RA1 when Einstein eliminates Hitler a parallel universe is created where he never existed. But time travel is very confusing so I guess you should probably suspend disbelief on that subject.

It was unusually stable on release for an EA game, but given that the engine they built it on has been around for ages that is to be expected. I actually enjoyed the single player as well (although I didn't bother with the rising sun missions) and I agree that the ingame cutscenes were fun, possibly moreso than the older games.

However when the older games were made there was pretty much no competition, I found the biggest failing of RA3 was that I instincively compared it to Petroglyph games, universe at war/empire at war were both stellar games. RA3 didn't really do anything new and the combat felt stale and boring next to other current gen games.

Red Alert 2 is one of the most loved RTS games ever, and Red Alert 1 is, objectively, probably even better for its time. Then EA take over Red Alert 3, whore it onto every console they can and add nothing to gameplay. Yeah, great.

Oh ho ho...
Where to start on what I hate:

1) Tanya...Seriously...WTF?

2) The Apocalypse Tank: They were my absoloute FAVORITE in RA2. I know I shouldn't really be here complaining as I haven't played it but after watching the "Battle Footage" of it...ARGH! THEY RUINED IT!

3)THE CARTOONY LOOK! IT BURNS!!

4)Storyline: Yea yea...I know I haven't played it and all I have to go on is the site...But ARGH!

5) Let's see...I'm so full of hate right now I'm forgetting... Ah yea, Secondary functions! While they were briefly introduced in CnC 3 in the form of abilities, I like their traditional "Select these guys, click on what I want to die." None of this 'Abilities' and 'Second Functions' Crap.

6) Transformers! ARGH! Stupid Empire of the Rising Sun! Be less technological! I mean transforming mechanical chicken-copters? Come on!

/hate.

Red Alert 2 was like, easily my favourite game ever. When Red Alert 3 came out, I absolutely loved it. I was so happy with it, but when they released the update that nerfed Engineers to nothing for no fucking reason, I couldn't deal with it anymore. I stopped playing.

I actually liked playing RA3 on my friend's computer, the gameplay wasn't exactly like the old ones but diferent doesn't nessercarily mean worse.

Having somewhat laughable cut scenes and dialogue in-game was actually approprate this time around (the silliness of the cut scenes etc. in CnC 3 just felt awkward, we were laughing at the game, not with it) and the general atmosphere of a Sci-Fi Cold War was still present (critising this game for having a third, somewhat unrelated, faction is like critising Yuri's revenge for having the Yuri army or CnC3 for having the Scrinn...and Generals for having any of the three factions).

I get a feeling that most of the hate surrounding RA3 is generated by one of two things:

a) Nostalgia and the feeling that nothing will surpass the originals
b)EA bashing (honestly, it's not like they have the bad version of Midas's touch, everything they come into contact with does not miraculously turn to shit)

I'd be inclined to say people hate it because it was on consoles, and as we all know, RTSes don't work on console. It's also probably a protest against EA as much as anything, because they hate EA as a company and hate the DRM they use even more.

Blizzard are doing much the same thing with StarCraft 2. There will probably be precious few changes to gameplay, but it will have shinier graphics (!) and will be released in three parts for no other reason than for Blizzard to make as much money as possible from it.

It was a good game.I liked the over the top story and new additions, and it was fun.

The only complaint i have is about tanya becoming a slutty blond chick with about as much depth as a piece of Yorkshire pudding, like at least in RA2 she was getting close to a 3d character (if you could do that for this franchise as they make the characters as 2d as possible) but she seemed..... eh bad. I liked natasha more than her.

RA3 is decent, but doesn't live up to the hype or the legacy of the previous games. It's also juvenile when compared to Tiberium Wars. And finally, the expansion pack was just flat out bad...

I liked RA and loved RA2, but RA3 just didn't do it for me.

A couple things I really liked, such as the cutscenes and the final Soviet Mission, which was a wonderful Homage to the first Allied mission in RA2. And of course, the doomsday laser in Mt. Rushmoore.

The actors were fun to watch too.

Unfortunatly, the game had a bunch of things that just killed it for me:

1. The game went a little too much towards the silly side at times and the missions suffered for it. Particulary for the Japanese. Come on. Destory a bunch of Soviet Statues? Take over TV stations in LA? That's the best they can come up with? Which leads into....

2. The Japanese feel tacked on and horribly gimicky. Sure, all the vehicles are transformers, but that makes them fragile as hell and it takes far too long to switch to a different mode to counter a given attack. Oh, and their air defense sucks horribly, particularly in the face of the fact both the Allies and Soviets both have Heavy Bomber Units.

3. The game balance feels off. Screw the Cyrocopters and the fricken Ice beam. Give me the fricken satillite drop/magnetic satilite any day. The allies have all sorts of high tech stuff that freezes and shrinks and such. The Soviets just put more guns on theirs, and are better for it.

4. I really got to like the Red Alert Universe and then...they pretty much throw the entire thing out the window. I'd rather see more Yuri then the Empire, frankly. At least his gimmicky units were mostly useful. And the ending of Yuris revenge more or less hinted at a sequel...that apparently won't happen now.

5. I know it's nickpicky, but the Cuba mission annoyed the crap out of me. For one, it's pretty much the same mission as the Cuba mission in RA2 and it's pretty retarded. Okay, so the soviets have finally developed Nukes. Which they then strap onto...giant, slow moving blimps and if even one leaves the map, you fail.

Okay, let's put this in perspective. The Soviets already have shown that they have rocket technology, even in the new universe. And now they have nukes. Instead of mating the two, which would seem logical, they use giant, slow moving blimps....crossing miles and miles of ocean to an allied target....which probably has advance warning. But apparently the allied air force/navy is so useless it can't shoot down a blimp over the ocean because it...got away.

I know the game isn't exactly heavily grounded in reality, but when the whole premise is that stupid and you can fail just because of that stupid premise, I call BS.

Its too overpowered. I liked in the old games you could built a stronghold and they would have to storm in. Now they can use the stupid secret weapon points to get a powerful attack and blow like $100000 of your investment sky high (Or into orbit if its the soviet magnetic satalite). Also all the units have special abilities. Some of them are annoying and stupid.

When EA take over the Starcraft license, they put Starcraft 2 on consoles and then they make it shocking, I'll complain. Face it, Starcraft and RA3 are completely different beasts - the most popular E-sport and most bought RTS of all time versus.. RA3. Blizzard will spend forever making sure Starcraft 2 is balanced just right both before and after release. There's just no such effort from other developers.

I played the 360 version. Command and Conquer 3 had better controls, I'm not sure if Kane's Wrath had the same control scheme so I can't comment on that. I did play the demo for RA3, and I hated the controls, C&C3 had excellent controls, they allowed me to do anything, I could build a functioning base amazingly fast. Meanwhile the RA3 controls have the same functionality, but imo a worse interface. Again, this is the 360 versions.

We'll see what happens after release, and chances are that you're right that they will spend a lot of time and effort making it good. This doesn't change the fact that, at the moment, their main concern seems to be getting as much money from their fans as they possibly can.

Maybe the fabulous riches brought to them by WoW have begun to corrupt them.

Personally, I do not hate Red Alert 3. It`s cartoony graphics, cheesy plot and ridicolous units/abilities are well in line with what the franchise is all about. Infact, my personal opinion is that the previous instalments took themselves too seriously considering the plot barely qualifies as a B-movie (for the lack of a better term). This time, it made fun of itself, which provided at least some entertainment. Plus, although I usually dislike the women the majority drools over, even I have to admit that Kelly Hu is a very attractive woman.

Having said that, it comes down to personal preference and I perfer the original Red Alert over the other two. While it goes without saying that the second and third instalment are technically superior to the original, I guess I perfered the WW2-esque atmosphere that existed in Red Alert. The original also has a superior soundtrack (although I really like Hell March 2) and even the original Tanya at least looked remotely like an actual commando.

Overall, it is not that Red Alert 3 is a bad game. It is just that I liked Red Alert better.

MiserableOldGit, it is completely true that RTS games are by no means a realistic potrayal of strategy. However, that was never really their intention. The point of the RTS genre is to use simplified elements of strategy in order to allow for dexterity to play an important role as well. However, that does not mean that these games do not involve any strategy (at least some of them do). It is just that it is simplified and miniaturised to the point where it is easier to manage at fast speeds. That is the reason why I can appretiate vastly different games such as StarCraft, The Operational Art of War III and Hearts of Iron 2. :)
