Metal is powerful as shit, that's why. Also, try Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Edguy, Dio, Guns and Roses, Manowar, Motley Crue, Saxon, Twisted Sister, etc. There's tons of metal without screaming. Out of all of those, I'd recommend Edguy and Manowar the most.

... I don't really like metal. There are the odd bands that I like (probably lamer borderline metal/punk rock ones) but I do like punk rock. Loud noise and a fast beat fascinate me. Metal's louder noise but a bit slower a beat, so I guess you could call it a reasonable tradeoff.
You'd probably like late 80s crossover stuff... NYHC sound mixed with thrash/speed metal.

Because I like it. Do I really need a reason to like something? As for what I listen to, pretty much all genres of it, although I don't really listen to many power metal bands so I can't suggest any.

I personally enjoy black metal, death metal, doom metal and straight-up heavy metal. I also have the most obscure stuff on here by far. :D
You should post a list of said black, death and doom metal bands. I'm looking for more to listen to.

There are so many bad bands these days. Only a handful seem to be liberated from all virtuoso wankery, cheesiness or straight up angsty bullshit.
Fixed that for you.

Honestly the singers with voices that sound like their voice box has been torn open are my favourite, with a few exceptions.
I like them because them take singing and make a metal version of it, metal uses all the instruments that other genres use but it adds a unique twist which makes it so recognizable.

Of course just because you can growl and sing at the same time doesn't mean you are a good singer.

Closer to the title question I like metal........because...well it is just so great.
I feel like I am part of something bigger at a metal show, a sorta music for all the guys and girls who didn't feel at home with the other kids and their rap and pop music.

Probably because we live in such an angry and violent society anymore, so it fits right in with the Status Quo.

Well for death metal there's Ingurgitating Oblivion, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Wormed, for doom metal there's Ea, Wormphlegm, Shape of Despair and Torture Wheel, and for black metal there's Fell Voices, Nivathe, Anaal Nathrakh and the Ruins of Beverast.

Try 3 inches of blood. It's sort of the metal that you associate with leather and Judas Priest.
and they're very mid-evil.

People like different things, and not all of them will be the same things you like.

I listen to a wide range of music (I've had Happy Hardcore Radio on for the last few hours, for example), but I enjoy metal the best, from clean vocals, to growling, to screaming. I guess I like it for the aggression, and the energy. It helps me vent frustration. But there's also beauty in it, especially those bands that treat it as an art (Eyes Set to Kill and Alesana come to mind. Both have two singers: one clean, and one screamer/growler)

And there are plenty of metal bands with clean vocals. Billy Talent, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Mudvayne (to a degree. The vocalist really does need cough syrup, incidentally), Alestorm, Five Finger Death Punch and Drowning Pool are some great examples to start off with.

I'm not... I prefer Indy music or punk rock. Even a little rap here and there. I don't understand the popularity of the metal genre... Not really my taste. I guess it's personal taste and opinion. The problem I have is that most of the metal fans here seem to have something against people who consider rap or pop good music.

I like all sorts of metal, old stuff, new stuff almost whatever. It tends to be individual bands that I don't like rather than one over-arching subtype.

Look up Arjen Anthony Lucassen. If you like melodic music and clean vocals, check out his work with various bands. It's metal but done differently. Also, he's just an example; there are MANY bands that you would probably like in the genre.

It somewhat goes with the territory. Similar themes in some respects. The whole connection with fantasy elements that are popularized in video games has long went hand in hand with fantasy elements in metal.

A better question in my mind is, why is it that death metal comes from places with the highest quality of life. In places in the world where death is a prevalent force that is clearly seen, you dont see alot of death metal, Where as places such as the US, and parts of Europe where metal is genuinely popular, are so much further removed from sights of death. I mean who was the last major metal act to come out of say, rwanda, Sudan, or Columbia?

Im sure there might be, but its definitely not a hotbed for it.

I haven't bought another metal album since Roots. That is the genre's peak.

I've moved on from metal since then anyway. I'd much rather listen to afro-beat, funk, soul, funky-soul and soul-funk now.
