i think it usually makes the gamertag look dumb, even if its a good one. i can understand adding it because the gamertag was taken, but i personally prefer adding a number

I just put an x in between the two words in my gamertag because they don't allow spaces and it would have taken way too much effort to reactivate the Xbox Live membership I had on the original Xbox.

RathWolf + account deactivation + failed reactivation for 360 = RathxWolf
They do allow spaces my tag is proof for that.
Strange, wouldn't let me do it just as "Rath Wolf" for some reason.

People put 'x's either side of their Gamertag if the Gamertag they wanted was already taken, it works with other letters too. It's juat an alternative to putting a random stream of numbers after the namem.
Example, guy wants my Gamertag DMNecris, but I already have it, so he registers xDMNecrisx or o DMNecris o or some shit like that.

Depends. Some people think it's an "emo thing", others that it makes people look cool. The only reason why I do it (like in my username for YouTube) is because the name I wanted was already taken. I couldn't have "Draeth" so I went with "xXDraethXx".

I'm pretty sure it's because the name they wanted was already taken, and x is one of the few lower case symmetrical letters so it looks pleasing and doesn't make too much of a visual impact on the name.

When a gamertag/username is taken, people do it so they don't have to use numbers. What people have against numbers is beyond me.

I mean it has gotten to the point that I don't even register what their actual gt is I just see the x's and turn my head. In conclusion, if your like me and caterogize all the xXgtXx in the same category than how is it unique and how does it get people to see your already taken gt

X's have to do with straight edge. Hardcore (an offshoot of punk rock) bands in the 90s started putting X's around their names when Earth Crisis started the straight edge revival. Not surprisingly, many of the kids who listened to these bands did the same to their names on the internet. Then it spread like wildfire. Used to be that I would see like one kid a night, now its 3 or 4 a lobby. I always make fun of them for "being straight edge" (note: been edge myself for about 9 years) and they never get it, nor do they know what straight edge is.

Really though, if anyone tries to tell you otherwise or that something else started it I'm gonna start posting album covers.

well, when I used to play Runescape my username was Nickydude X (its since been hacked I believe)... but that was only cause 'Nickydude' was unavailable, and I didn't want to put some random numbers after the name cause that felt lame.

I'd like to think that most people's reasoning behind it is a rumor I started years and years and... probably a few days ago that every single word and name in the English language has two silent 'x's at the beginning and end them. They're probably just doing what I indirectly forced them to learn in school.
As for why one of them is upper case? I dunno, sometimes things get added in Broken Telephone style.

If you do it because the name you want is taken then thats okay, otherwise you just have emotional problems and need to see a psychiatrist

To make it more tedious for people trying to kick/ban them from a game...
