Why do people relate "hardcore" gamers to pot-heads?

I understand why people would relate just me to this terminology because I dress like the 60s never went away and I really only listen to classic rock music, but when I ask people for other reasons they say because I play a lot of video games. I have never been high, but the point of this discussion is why is playing video games another reason for this assumption? The reason I can draw from it is that some imagery found in games could be very trippy or insane to comprehend while high.

EDIT: Also tell me if people relate you to something you aren't and some of their reasons why.

Let me know what you think.

I've never even heard of someone relating games to drugs.

My guess would be I have no idea because I cannot find any sort of connection other than both are stereotypically done in a dark room.

Simple, because potheads call themselves "hardcore gamers."

In case you didn't know, potheads can be some of the most arrogant and pretentious people on the planet. They'll basically give call themselves anything to make them look more multi-cultural. Stoners, on the other hand, just don't give a shit.

Sedentary lifestyle, high consumption of junk food, much time spent in front of a television, etc.

Both stereotypes sync up in a lot of ways.

This is interesting because I'm getting both sides of the spectrum. I guess it's just the people I know. I thought it would be a largely known affiliation.

I never heard this rumor, but I'd guess it'd be mostly the people talking on Xbox live who're stoned at 4am+ or Team Fortress, I found out I was 1 of 2 people who were not stoned on my team, and I'm straight edge (mostly)so yeah..

I dunno people assume I do drugs because I'm an artist, I have maybe 1 beer a month, if I can finish the neck of a bottle, so drugs are not happening.

what if games were associated with something like a severe longing for cake?
Parents would be like dont bring the cake eater around here.
did you see how excited he got when he learned your birthday was fast approaching?
He smells like flour.

Ah Mitch you'll live forever. /teardrop

I hear this rumor alot. Guess because the people who are Hard Core Gamers dress with big jackets and are "anti-social." I would know, people associate drugs + gaming + me because of how I act. Which is complete separation from most people.

I've never heard that comparison. Although there is a subgroup of gamers who are mainly in college, play FPSs, and smoke pot a lot. Anyways, gaming generally makes people think I'm really immature. Perhaps I am, or perhaps they are ignorant... either way.

Sorry, My Bad. Crack and Mario Kart, you know? Just Kidding. I think though, that it has more to do with the assumption that "Everything is more Wild" when stoned, so potheads would toke, and then pick up a console.

Plus, with the way I walk up to my similarly dressed, similarly attituded (i know its not a word) friend, and use the classical "I saw a mud crab the other day" conversation from oblivion with the blandness (and accent) of actual Oblivion npc's, I have to say that I cant blame them.
