Don't they still make 2D Sonic games on Gameboy, and how is this bad? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUvTQSssVaI

I have said it for awhile now, developers today could learn alot from the original games.

I think they refuse for three reasons:
1. Why go back to 2D? The gameplay of the classic games can easily be recreated, just with a 3D graphic.
2. They want to do something new. I think they are trying to not do the same thing over and over again ,because eventually that will get boring from repeating to many times...
3. Mario and Zelda seemed to have so much success. They could do anything they want and still have billions of loyal fans. But Sonic was bailed out of way too easily. It didn't even get a chance.

On an unrelated note, I am not looking forward to Zelda: Spirit Tracks. I mean, really? Trains? Next it's gonna be cars, and Links gonna be drinking lattes as potions.
4. THey're idiots? :p

Sonic games became bad when they tried to add plot to them. What's better than "Robotni-ERR EGGMAN is evil, Sonic is good, Sonic has to beat Eggman."?
Now, Eggman is GOOD but has questionable motives, Sonic is good unquestionably, he has an emo twin with a memory problem, a love interest that he's not interested in, and a slew of other stupid characters they keep throwing into the mix so they can add non sequiter plotlines into every game. Does anybody like Vector the Crocodile? Or Big the Cat? Or that Hawk guy? No.

The other problem is that the level design is too straightforward. In the old Sonic games, there were two or three paths in each level, now there's one or maybe two if we get lucky and if you go off the path you fly off the map and die. Even in the Sonic Advance series, there were many parts where you would gain speed and then fly off the map and die.

I also dislike Rogue and Cream.

Mario and Zelda get away with what they want because they stick to their established convention, making small genre-defining changes that add to the already solid gameplay. Mario doesn't pick up an Arthurian sword to dick around with('Calibur'? Really?), Link doesn't turn into a stretchy-armed monstrosity and run around ripping off God of War, and neither of them speak, meaning they don't give off the assinine impression in the way that only a character with truly obnoxious and dreadfully written dialogue can...

As the title says, why do people whine about it so much? In my honest opinion, the games are fine. True some are terrible, such as Sonic Heroes, but it's not a reason to want to kill the whole series. I see people always saying "JUST LET IT DIE ALREADY" and that doesn't make sense to me. If you keep thinking they HAVE to be as good as the old ones, you're going to be disappointed. Sega is trying to do something new instead of recreating the same thing. They have the balls to do something they want to do. And if you honestly don't like the games, don't play them. Why kill the whole effing series just because YOU don't like them. It's not like they're forcing you to play them. I myself would be sad if Sonic died, because I love some of their games. Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Riders (Not Zero G. That one sucked), Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, etc. Stop complaining about a series that you can just ignore if you don't like it.
if they are trying to make something new then why do they still call it sonic?

True. But Wind Waker was somewhat a piss off with the whole sailing thing. And the upcoming Spirit Tracks, well, that might just suck.

Or it could be fantastic. I can't judge games in the future, just what I've got in front of me right now. And while true enough Spirit Tracks isn't on the top of my most wanted list right now, it would be somewhat silly to discount it given Nintendo's massive success with what some gamers may define as unconventional. If Sonic Team had this same impressive track record then perhaps I'd be kinder to them. And you can bet as soon as they make some new Sonic games that are genuinely good then I'll be changing my tune and playing along with everybody else.

In a sense, I think the above is why people rag on about Sonic so much. He Sega's answer to Mario, brothers through and through, but while Mario went on to be rich and successful Sonic is like the son that dropped out of art school and is going to spend the rest of his life working at a McDonalds. People feel betrayed and disappointed by one of their favorite childhood icons due to his inability to live up to people's expectation and it's gotten to the point where it doesn't even seen like he's trying anymore.

at one point i attempted to explain this to a friend and i think we both agreed for once...

every movie/game/tv show and its mother has had a comic book seris that was based on it... as my understanding went sonic was one of the few seris' to do particularly well. it managed to do this even while NOT focusing on sonic... which is weird... now what i think sonic team tried to grasp at was a portion of that success... but they ended up with a handful of horrid dialog, idiot side characters, and half baked ideas that MAY have worked... had they not taken a course in story writing from capcom... that being said, wanting sonic to die is just many peoples' way of saying to sonic team: "Please stop making my beloved character take it up the bum in the interest of lining your pockets with gold."

Why? Because yahtzee said so... and also because they're bad, but mostly the first option.

That said i did play sonic heroes to death, and loved the Chao garden in whatever game that was... But it was still bad!

I think SEGA's making the newer games bad on purpose for bombing the DReamcast.

Remember SA 1 and 2? They were awesome, weren't they? Good Sonic 3D! Then you guys thorugh "HYUCK HYUCK PS2 HAS A DVD PLAYER BUT NO ONLINE AND PROMISING GAMES" (Keep in mind this was at the PS2's release, it has good games now, though) So yeah. Sonic Adventures, Shenmue, House of the Dead, SEGA's own (and actually pretty good) sports games.

I think people tend to complain about sonic because in the good old days of 2d the games were amazing, now-a-days the games are just average and people complain because they want the good old sonic games back.

Sorry if this has been said already i havn't read all the commments :p

Ohh, its goin' down now! See you outside the saloon and this will be decided by a shootout ;)

On Topic, I think 70% of the hate is like many things, people jumping on a popular bandwagon as it helps them fit in. Fair enough, theres nothing wrong with that as some people do that. The other 20% is from people who want Sonic to return to the nostalgia of their childhood, zipping around on a two dimensional plane hitting robotic animals. Its not going to happen as they are far more picky these days.

The last 10% just want the poor guy to get back into something resembling a good game. Its like seeing your childhood hero reduced to bumming off favours and offering them for drugs in the street. Whilst eventually he will get that hit and return to his prime, 80% of the time he will sit around pissing people off and acquiring a collection of useless friend from the rats that live in his cardboard box with him.

^^^^^^^^ Metaphor for Sonic games in the last 10 years.^^^^^^^^

My main problem is that Sonic Team have effectively told all it's original fans (including me) to fuck off. They have also appeared to have gone bat-shit stupid.
I'm not a die-hard fan, but I would at least like a Sonic 2D platformer for the DS, a good one. No voices, no attempt at a storyline, less than 20 bloody characters... I think it would be a nice swansong for a dying franchise.

That's just my opinion.

(Although Sonic Unleashed looked pretty sweet...)

Lets see, its hard for people to ignore the game if its bad if they have picked it up hoping it was going to be good to find it a worthless waste of time. Lets see, i loved Adventure battle 2 (ciaos!! are the best part) and though heroes was ok, but i bought shadow the hedgehog and sonic and the secret rings at a full Australian price (overpriced) because i hoped they were good...
Guess what? They were the worst things (i can hardly say games) I've ever played personally, i beat shadow the hedgehog the same hour i bought it and secret rings just plain sucked with the fact that you don't tell sonic to run, you tell him to stop, jump and sidestep. Which became irritating at harder or even moderate difficulty levels, because the wiimote didnt pick up the 'stop' motion too well and made precision platforming hell. Then add the terrible plot and setting, which in my opinion was just plain dull to get a bad game, then we add the coup-de-grace which is the soundtrack...
it plays every time you beat a sub level, and there is like 20 sub levels...it will drive you nuts without playing the game.

/rant

Wow, that let out some steam... I think i should review the other game (shadow), in a more organized fashion of course, on these forums.. will anyone read it?

Back on topic, the reason above is why myself and some others hate sonic currently, because we paid full price to get something that is sub par for a mascot that was originally a AAA title when we were young.*avoids being a hypocrite by not quoting the obvious Yahtzee quote.*

I know right, Sonic is just a blue furry character. But the sonic team can get so preoccupied with graphics they make everything else a bit mediocre.
