Because its the easiest and most discreet way of entertaining yourself while you are webcamming with your girlfriend
did you get your avatar from webcamming your girlfriend?

OT: I ask myself this every day

I suppose it's because I want to be recognised and appreciated by an international community of some sort, and I like showing off my (poor) wit

So the self righteous can condescend over other people behind the safety of their computing box.

So trolls can inflate their ego by shitting out the mouth behind the safety of their computing box.

And so at least somewhat decent people can communicate, teach other people, learn from other people, and provide reasoned support or discourse about a particular idea.

I like to see other people's opinions and it's nice knowing that your voice is heard...erm...read.

Plus I dunno, beats doing Fundamentals in Computing & Imaging homework.

We want social acceptance from the comfort of our own homes.
Isn't this form of social acceptance a kind of delusion?
Yes, but humans, as imperfect beings with emotion, need some sort of comfort and solidity to hold on to. If it is a delusion, so be it. That doesn't mean they are lesser of a human being.

I come on here to relax. Currently, I'm stuck on a writing assignment and I need to figure out what to put next.
This process is also known as procrastinating. God, this site is good for that.
I also find the discussions here entertaining...

I shall answer them both, in my opinion (however insignificant it may be) delusion is perfectly fine until you realise you are deluded, where upon it is not.
Why is that so wrong, to know one is deluded? As long as it does no harm, then it is perfectly fine, no?

Umm, okay... the fact is, people like to be in a place where they can have "quasi-friends," or people who they can make contact with whenever they want, rather than when they have to. It adds another layer to the social chart, becoming another set of people with which one can interact with, especially when real-life friends cannot be contacted (for example, your best friend is taking a trip to Uruguay, so you use forum friends as a substitute). Is that better? It is basically the same thing, but with prettier wording.

I'm afraid I have to go so cannot think of anything logical to say to that, so for now, you win number1Zero! But I will be back one day with equally arduous questions!
