Well for one, he's funny. Humor alone can make you appreciate someone's weekly 5 minute show.
But why we really LIKE him? Because he's a consistent asshole. He points out things we often ignore or gloss over in games. His persona reminds me of the Jester archetype from Shakespeare: he's a wise fool. It's fun to laugh with him, but I find his two cents on society outside and in gaming worthwhile. For an example, I thought it was poignant when he mentioned that we are a culture so steeped in escapism that it's totally normal to mention "standard fantasy setting." That's what I take away from his reviews. And the excessively long metaphors.

While he technically is a reviewer, I think a better word would be Ranter. He has the balls to say stuff about our favourite games that we can't bring ourselves to, and does it in a rather comical manner.

I enjoy ZP & EP when it its surprising and thought provoking; which for the most part it is. But whenever it gets closer to a game review instead of a critique it really isn't much better than anything else on the web. He certainly does raise the bar though: the Wolfenstein review made me snigger like the slightly self-loathing Irishman I am.

The man's charismatic too, which certainly helps when so many vocal video game players are just drooling basement dwelling miscreants, attention seekers with hard-ons* for the latest releases and universal contempt for anything that doesn't fit in with there teeny tiny precious special worldview.

You filthy rancid breathed scum.

*Ever notice women and girls do not to come across as complete gobshites when discussing casual gaming the way a the league of mortifying embarassing Halo fanboys who accuse the unprepared gamer of recreational sodomy do? The fairer sex indeed!

I can laugh my ass off when I watch his reviews even though he is constantly insulting the games I love and he even insults me sometimes.
I think I love the fact that he is such an asshole and he doesn't give a fucking crap.
Why do you love (or hate) Yahtzee?
Calling him an asshole is a bit harsh. I'd say he's a man of with convictions and the backbone to stand by what he says. So he's admirable to say the least, unlike most other critics or reviewers who just suck the game companies of to get money.

The accent, the unbridled criticism, the well-chosen references and the fact that he's never hated a game I liked. In fact, all the games he's ever mentioned that I like have been ones he holds up as examples of good ones.

I enjoy not only his awesome accent and hat, but the way in which he rips it to games that deserve it, and praises genuinely good games. Plus, he actually admits when he has fun with a game, even if he believes the game isn't very good.

With a couple of exceptions, everything he says about a lot of games make sense. All of the games he loves are ones that are genuinly awesome, like Shadow of the Collosus, and most of the games he says are horrible usually are. I still can't see his beef with fighting games, though. Yes, it's only one aspect of a game, but it's the most fun part. Or, come to think of it, his deal with JRPG's. Whenever he says anything about them, I can't tell who's the bigger xenophobe, them or him. Anyways, we love him because he makes us laugh, he lets us know what games are genuinly uninteresting (at least to him), and tells what things about them that are good and bad. So keep it up yahtz, cause you got a good thing going.

I happen to like Yahtzee for the fact that he's shown to have similar tastes in gaming as I do..and he avoids the games that I happen to like, (not all, but some JRPGs). I've always been kind of a harsh critic, and though on occasion I'll try a game that Yahtzee dislikes to find that I may like pieces and bits, kinda, but overall can't play it for too long.

Really, everyone can have a critic about something, and Yahtzee has actually proven that if he doesn't slander it too bad, it's something I can play without getting pissed off. If it's like..I dunno...TOO HUMAN...I would probably avoid it...If it's too slow moving, I don't have time to play it. Hence why I listen to him and have to find the right words that will make me play the game.

((and to anybody who thinks I'm gushing here, He's the one that got me to play Saints Row 2, which I have yet to find anything that beats it in my mind :3))

He makes entertaining horror/adventure games with great atmosphere and story as well as witty and charmingly cynical reviews.

He's insightful, funny and doesn't pull his punches. A man after my own heart.

If it seems like he's getting less funny, well, there's only so far that the Funny Metaphor can take you before it starts to get a bit repetitive, even if the metaphors change. Still, the humour is only part of the reason I watch.

I look forward to his videos every week even though I have no intrest in most of the games he reviews. He's a great comedian and (like me) he's a hater. Oh and he wears a trilby. Anyone who can pull off the trilby look is OK in my book.

I knew this thread was bound to rear its head at some point...

I am all for Yahtzee's videos. As I stated in a previous thread, Yahtzee is the Strongbad of the Escapists Homestarrunner.

But please, let us leave the man his dignity, (ourselves, as well.) and not start a slavish fanboi cult?

Hes a guy. Hes a funny, well spoken, educated guy.

But he is just a guy.
