Ah the completionist challenge, slog through a crappy game or live knowing you didn't finish it.

I think it's because we either don't know how bad the game is, or that we like to balence the almighty with the almightily shit.

There's a few reasons to like bad games:

If it has some really good elements, a hook, or a challenge. Also, many games have rather low technical value but are just great fun.

Most common I think is that some people like poor quality entertainment: Many people like those Scary/Epic/Disaster Movies, many people like trashy romance novels, and many people liked No More Heroes.

There's nothing wrong with liking poor quality entertainment, unless you try convincing other's that it's good.

If I happen to buy a game that sucks, wether I play it a lot kind of depends on how much I payed for it. If I payed full price, I'll force myself to keep playing for a while, hoping that it will get better somewhere along the way. If I payed like 10 euro's for it, I won't bother. If I find out it sucks, too bad. I'll quit playing and put it on the shelf to collect dust.

Well sometimes we as the gamer want to hope that maybe this game will be slightly good and we sit down to play it and then before we know it we are swearing at the camera but we play it to the end.

I have played some action game I hated but then I quit it because it was pants. :/

For me, playing crappy games signifies a low point in my life. A point where I have nothing to do but play games, because my plans revolving around doing stuff outside/hanging out with friends get foiled somehow. On a good day, I might play some Devil May Cry or Mega Man X for an hour before going to kickboxing in the morning, and then again for a few hours in the afternoon before going to kickboxing again in the evening.

On a day where I have nothing to do but play games, I'll bust out Smash Bros Brawl (playing single player really isn't that appealing, especially once you get past the 400 hours of playing mark), or a game from the X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance series. I used to like the series, a lot. But then somewhere along the way, my standards for games increased, and the series hasn't quite improved quickly enough to satisfy my tastes. I suppose the last time I played the games (last weekend) was a feeble attempt to recapture some of the entertainment I once experienced when I still liked those games.

So in short, the better your life is, the less time you have for games.
The less time you have for games, the more fun you want to get out of what little time you have.
The more fun you want, the less you play crappy games.

I...don't? If I'm not having fun with a game within an hour or two I'll turn it off and won't play it again, at least for a few months/years at which point I might consider revisiting it again to have another go and see if I can enjoy it.

I did the very thing with Ocarina of Time and to this day I still can't make myself have fun with it.
The problem with WoW is that it takes months of miserable boring-ness to get to the mediocre amounts of fun. Which is why I couldn't bring myself to play it for more than 20 minutes.
For some, perhaps. I started playing about 3 months after release and I was having fun pretty much the whole time. If I stopped having fun I'd simply logout, then I'd come back a while later and start playing again. I'd repeat the pattern as necessary.

Madness, I know, but it's true.
