Sometimes you just KNOW something to be true, you cant prove it, or argue for it in empirical terms but you just KNOW.
That's a really good way to put it.

Faith feels good, and my meracle is being happy (as cheesy as that sounds). Being faithful isn't hard, anyone who thinks worrying and spending one hour every sunday is just too lazy.
Thanks for starting a discussion about WHY faith is good instead of the millionth one yelling about why people hate it. There should be more intelligent people like you.

I have my own theory similar to the 'circular time/never ending universe' one presented a few posts ago, but a few times more complex. Might write a paper on it at some point and present it to scientific world at large, but for now im ironing out the few teeny flaws. It works on a basis that there are many universes but they all work on a shared timescale, and that there is a finite amount of time that is never used up or added to. From then on it gets SERIOUSLY confusing...

I don't believe in a singular higher power... but I like to think there's more out there than we know or understand... otherwise the world is just a boring, meaningless place.

Has nothing to do with religion, that's just garbage to me. But the Universe is so vast, there's GOT to be more out there.

So, no fellow Buddhists in this thread? I am a sad panda. :(
Oooh, a Buddhist! I have to say that your faith has always intruiged me. It's a nice concept.
Why, thank you. :D

I like to think it's much more mellow than most religions primarily because Buddhism is focused on a 'finding-your-own-spiritual-place' thing than a 'prosecute, proselytize, and persecute the unbelievers!' agenda. How many Buddhist extremists are there out there?

Exactly!

I implore you to read Richard Dawkins 'The God Delusion'. Even if it doesn't affect your view, it's a good book.
Several folks have recommended this to me. The title is what drives me off. I would read it otherwise: but it seems blatantly hostile just by looking at the cover.

EDIT: Is that avatar from the Sword in the Stone?

Dude it's from the Road to El Dorado... That movie rocked

have we put a moon on a man? i think not

all bad wit aside, i dont care about religion dont care if its right or wrong if im goign to heaven or hell if god is real or not, its not something i can see, guess thats why its called faith, and i dont want to waste my time deciding if i want to practise a religion, its not something that matters to me, so i figure, why bother?

though if i HAD to chose, i would be a pastifarian >.> all hail the FSM

The guys that I consider moderates are often the same way: we don't like being all beligerent. To be honest, the most interesting part of your faith was the reincarnation bit: it's always been a interesting thought. There are other parts too: I just see reincarnation as being particularly fascinating.

I'm very nihlistic when it comes to this. I believe humans simply don't have the intellectual capacity to work out where we came from. The whole thing is completely pointless to me. Kinda like trying to teach a dog maths.

I honestly think life is much easier without a God, no need to go to church on sundays, or having to worry about having "impure thoughts" and all of that bullshit.

I find that not worrying about hell or heaven is awesome.

I'm content with the fact that I'll be rotting in the ground when I die. I'm not scared of death and I'm not scared of nothingness. When something good happens I attribute it to a fortunate occurrence that I am grateful for, same deal with the bad times.

I believe this is my only life. When I'm thinking whether or not I should do something, I tell myself, "this is the only life you get so don't fuck it up" and take the sensible route.
Now I don't have to type anything. I can just point at this and say "pretty much that".

I agree. The strangest part about it is that it promises roughly the same kind of eternal life as Christianity or Islam, but in an unusual way- you lose all your memories with each death and get a brand new body, and a brand new life. In other words, according to the Buddhist faith, your consciousness is recycled after death into the cosmic 'oversoul' and a new soul is distributed to you. Unless of course you've been wicked or sinful, in which case you get reincarnated as an animal or a rock, the ultimate goal actually being breaking the reincarnation cycle and ascending to a higher plane of existence, i.e., breaking the cycle of samsara.

What I actually disagree with Buddhism on is the bit about samsara being necessary; if you get reincarnated endlessly, over and over again, isn't that eternal life? Why give it up? It's rather unusual when the means is more desirable than the ends, especially in religion.

I believe in God like I believe in the sun, not only because I see it, but by its light I see everything else.
