most basically; its cheap.

sometimes i do it to hurt the publishers/developers when they pull "Extra edition" 3 months after release (SSFIV:AE and UMVC3 are good examples of this) after i bought the original. or if its for a older generation of console or the game is rare to find, like last week i bought DMC: HD Collection 2nd hand because i could not find it anywhere else. the same with MGS HD collection that my sister wanted.

but most games i really do want to invest in I buy new, otherwise games i'm not that interested in i buy 2nd hand (last one being MW3).

Because it's better to get two or three games for the same price as a new release.

Because I'll pay full price for a game I'm sure I will like, while the rest aren't worth the gamble.

Because I've more important things to spend my money on.

The goddamn price tags on games nowadays. I rarely buy used (No GameStop or such within 150 kilometers), but if I'm popping down to a big city or I otherwise run into a steal, I'll preferably grab old titles for less.

I mean c'mon, 69,95 for a brand new game? There better be a solid gold game disc inside for that kind of dosh.

Cheaper, and to get the 'GOTY edition' or whatever they're calling it so I can get the DLC along with it.

Because I don't really care about publisher or the developer.
I want to get as much stuff as possible for as little money as possible.
They want to get as much money as possible for as little stuff as possible.

See? We never where on the same side. It's called capitalism. I don't like it, but if they are going to look at me as a resource, I'm gonna do the same with them.

For two reasons.
1: I am a selfish heartless bastard who doesn't care about the profits of videogame developers and publishers
1: It's more or less the only way I can buy older games in a store
2: It's much cheaper than buying games new.

I buy used because Gamestop gives me a reason to buy used. As a member of their reward club I get 10% off all used games and accessories and something like 30% off of new strategy guides. Also I get points for each purchase I make at Gamestop and can use those points to buy things like posters, collectibles, discounts on games etc. Above and beyond all that I also get frequent member only sales in my email for things like buy 2 get 1 free on used games.

Now I won't speak as to their trade in program as I typically hold on to my games or in the rare instances I do find I no longer want an individual game I choose to sell it on Craigslist rather than trade it in at Gamestop.

The bottom line is Gamestop actually goes above and beyond just selling me a game and gives me a good many little extras on top of already offering me a cheaper product.

I think a consensus has arisen over the past two pages that can be summarized as "because economics".

Honestly i don't buy used unless i cannot find the game new . This doesn't mean i'll shell over 60$ for any ol' game . I usually way until the price of a jew game drops to 30$. There are two exceptions to this :

1) Jrpgs . These i will buy on release , because i know i'll at lease get 30 hours of gameplay out of it .
2) Mass effect 3. I bought it used at 54$ Soley out of spite .

Cheaper.

Most games are ?60-70 when they're new.
If I wait a few months and buy a used copy it's around ?20-25.

But I rarely buy used games, usually I browse video games stores and see what they have for sale.
Sometimes they have good deals, like 2 good/fun games for ?25

I almost always buy new to support the developers, but there are a few cases in which I buy used.
1. There is no way for me to get a new copy (Before I had a debit card.)
2. I refuse to support the company that made the game/don't feel it is worth 60 dollars (Call of Duty, any Capcom game not Resident Evil or Dead Rising)
3. If I am buying people gifts and it would allow me to get them more stuff, and buying it used won't cut out half of the game.
4. I am buying the game again, and don't feel like spending 5 extra dollars.
Those are really the only reasons I ever buy used. The 5 dollar mark down doesn't really matter and I usually just get games day of anyway.

Because I am POOR. :D

I usually only buy 1 or 2 brand new games a year. I just cant afford it otherwise.
Agreed. I have a policy of paying for only three new games a year. That said, have friends that buy video games with relative frequency. So I generally get to play what I would want to anyway. Otherwise, yeah, I do the "wait 2 years to get the super-awesome edition for cheap" thing.

Only new games for me, but I almost always wait until they are heavily discounted.

I recently bought a nifty Darksiders/Metro 2033 duopack for 15 bucks and Binary Domain for 20 bucks.
