Because these forums in general give off this maturity vibe that makes people less likely to make stupid responses. People are more polite (by internet standards) and arguments are civil (by internet standards). And when people try to bring patented internet stupid (like trolling, "FIRST!" posts, and arguments that resort to petty insults), mod action is typically quick.

If you want a smaller, more personal community, try the pubclub forums. As for the layout, I love it as well, so can't help you there.
On www.discussions.playnet.com i've got over 12,000 posts (you won't be able to see it due to subscription required) so I've got my nice little place to hang out.

I can understand that the first forums you come to can be the ones that you want to stick with though. Although having said i've got 12,000 posts on the other forum (since April 07) it does occur to me that most people posting here who say it's their only forum only have a couple thousand posts, which isn't actually very much, so I guess it's just a different type of forum in general.

With the huge amount of people on here I just can't imagine any decent back and forth conversation having or threads you can get personally attached to. We have a 'We need this thread to reach 1,000,000 pages' thread on my forums, but after 5 years we're only up to about 3,500. However the thread actually feels like a room where you can walk into and be greeted by friends who know you and you can have a laugh with. I've got ~700 posts in that thread alone, more then a lot of people have in total on here, and I just can't imagine such a monolith of a thread occuring here that I could care about as much.

So yeah, mabye I just have high standards for what I think a forum should be, and this is much more casual then what i'm used to :p (Wow I feel so epically nerdy basically describing myself as a hardcore forumer)

I used to part of many small forums for different types of subjects, and it just came to be so much. I like how the Escapist just has everything in one. So, as a list, I would say I like the Escapist because:

+Well moderated.
+Diverse active community.
+Good video game news source.
+Badges

I am actually getting less interested on these forums day by day
I go tcouple reasons why im losing the intrest:
- Some-what too powerhappy admins.
- Ponies
- I usaually disagree with about 50% of the OP:s
- Ponies
- F-load of ppl, sometimes when i have a good response but then i see that thread has like 10+ pages off replys, i end up flipping my screen off and continuing.
- Ponies

Don't get me wrong, some of u guys are still kewl. (If u quote this and disagree with me ur not :) )

Because of Yatzee (and Extra Credits). Really I come here to watch their videos and often see a thread topic that intrigues me so I check it out. Sometimes I have a look at the forums directly but not often. But honestly, if Yatzee and Extra Credits left I'd probably go with it.

Oh, you'd be looking towards the user groups or forum games then. The user groups are pretty much mini forums for little groups of friends, and there's a few sunken forum games still haunted by a small, scary, creepy community. Lovely chaps. :3
We like to keep the big forums for discussion, and leave everything else to the user groups and IRC. So far as I've seen anyway.

Whoops, forgot to answer the question. I favour these forums because of the community.

I dunno actually. It's warm and fluffy here, i suppose. I like the stuff that's being put on the Escapist, and I enjoy reading the news and other stuff.
But i don't actually hang around in the forums that much. At least i think.
But still, as I said, i like this place a lot. I guess i can't put my finger on the main reason, but the fact that I've been here and still am means that it's a lovely place, right?

Does that make any sense at all?
Anyways, i like it here, and that's the end of that tale.

Considering the alternatives, this is one of the nicer and better moderated communities out there. And we don't stand for any of that "first" crap.

Everything on here, the groups, threads, videos, reviews, [insert name of thing on the escapist here], is intellectually engaging [sub] most of the time[/sub]. I guess I just enjoy using the escapist forums and can't be bothered to find any other forums?

It's just all around better than the other forums I've been to or been a part of. I like most of the people. Also, no signatures.

a) People are not, unlike a great deal of gaming forums, assholes. They are capable of generating intelligent responses and reasonable debate. They're funny, too.

b) It's attached to the magazine, so you get threads about all the videos and articles

c) The threads are listed on the side, so I don't have to go trawling through forums and sub-forums to find interesting topics - I just pick the ones that sound interesting when I'm passing by.

d) Occasionally a regular asshole enters the forum, and is subsequently savaged by hilariously sarcastic replies.
Pretty much this. I found these forums from being introduced to Zero Punctuation (like many others I assume) because they were on the same page as the video. I used to always look at IGN for gaming news, now I come here first. I only use IGN for reviews now. And I can't be bothered looking for other forums.

Also I love it when d) occurs... I dunno what that says about me as a person though

Side note: is captcha trying to be 3D? o_O

Well, it's more about the users themselves than the forums. We have people here with 60k posts that have been here 1 or 2 years, and have some that have been here for 5 years and has less than 100. As for the personal touch, I'd recommend groups. It's hard to find the right one for you, but maybe asylum? That's a lot like the thread you described. Also, there are parts of the forums that are a lot less crowded, just this place is the biggest one so you may be in the wrong place. Maybe forum games? Also, try the IRC, it's a lot more relaxed.

I find that I am too impatient for smaller boards. Other boards I have been to took days to actually get 4-5 replies. It takes seconds here. That is the main reason.

Because the escapist has a loud, funny and quite blunt man who reviews video games harshly and won't lie because they paid him to give it a good review.
That and it seems the mods are harsh but decent here. -suckup suckup-
