Hanging out with my friends and one of my friends girlfriend. I happen to be a pretty hardcore wrestling fan since my youth, and I just plain enjoy it. I like the stories, I like the characters, I like the action. It's fun. So I was talking with my two chums about it explaining an ongoing storyline and the girlfriend in question blah blah blah said she didn't like it because it was fake.

How is that a decent reason? Were not back in the early days where wrestling's validity was a closely guarded secret. The truth that it's all fake came out in the early 90's during the Vince McMahon steroid trial. It's an open secret that it's not real.

Not only that, it's a stupid reason not to like anything. the big blockbuster movies we pay to see every summer? Guess what? That's not a real monkey gaining sentience and rebelling against the planet. It's real when that guy pretending to be Captain America starts taking out nazi's. Oh but that scripted entertainment is okay to enjoy, but wrestling isn't?

Hell going a little further down the pool, Reality TV shows are such an AMAZING hit with american people at large but... shocker, they have writers. Why does a REALITY TV show need writers?

My annoyance just stems from the fact I've never heard a reason for not liking it that seemed the least bit legitament. It's always "It's Fake" or "It's Gay". It's never anything legitament like "Oh the storylines are too confusing." or "I don't understand whats going on or whos who". Hell I've never even one person say it's "boring" to them.

annnnd Trollers Gonna Troll this, so just ignore them, k? I'd just like to here some legitimate criticism.

Well, to me it always seemed a bit too ridiculous for me to take seriously, but I guess that just sort of adds to the fun. I could see how it could throw some people off, though.

Eh, I'm not into it as much as my bosses are.

They keep talking about it, and I have no idea what's going on.

Me? I'm apathetic.

It's too loud, too boistereous and too crude for my taste. And this is not coming from someone who particularly enjoys movies like that.

The storylines are stupid and dull, and the acting is so laughably horrible that, if it were trying to be a legit movie, it would be a box office flop.

All the "characters" seem to do is blow out their front teeth, and that's just annoying.

And I could forgive all of that, really, if it weren't for the fact that everyone on those shows lies, cheats, and steals. Even the so-called good guys. Who the heck am I supposed to be routing for? They're all unlikable pricks. And really, little kids are watching this, and if their idol does all that an more, what kind of a message is that sending to the kids?

I will say, about my last statement, that I am not one who believes all violence in the world can be traced back to the media, but I will say that this sort of thing doesn't help matters all that much.

I personally find the whole thing unlikable and in poor taste.

I can't hate people who like the show since I know many and I'm related to one by blood, but personally, I just don't see any wrestling worthy of my time. I would much rather watch something else.

Edit: Also, the plot is the same all the time, from what I can see. It's all about who stabbed who in the back, who's trying to take over now, who's aligned or who betrayed the other, blah, blah, blah. Basically, the same, boring, predictable plot over and over again. It's basically a manly soap opera with occassional fighting.

And I don't care for soap operas either.

This is hard to explain...
Its not so much the fact that its fake, its the fact that its Faaaaaaaaaaaake.

Things like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKi0eWG4ils

It just looks really really bad when they screw up, and it completely takes you out of the experience.
You've accepted the fact that it is fake, and scripted entertainment... That just means that they have to work extra hard to sell it.

For your Captain America analogy, yes, just like wrestling, it isn't real. The difference is, what if they shot all of Captain America in one take, and had to include all of the bloopers. Every time Captain America accidentally trips over his own feet, or forgets a line, or giggles, it is released in the final cut.
It would completely ruin the experience.

Its about suspension of disbelief. Movies and Wrestling have to draw you in, engage you...so that you aren't even questioning whether or not its fake because you don't care. I used to love watching wrestling as a kid, but whenever I see it on TV nowadays, I just think, "...Wow....really?"

Uh...I don't. In fact, I'm actually a pretty big fan of it.

WDIT: And for those saying it's fake...well, DUUUUURRRRRR. If they were really slamming the fuck out of each other, they would be dead. and that's not even meantioning the ones who've died in the ring, but that's beside the point. A few things can't be faked though, so you're taking that bump no matter what. Injuries happen all the time, such as....

I don't like pro wrestling because after WWF bought WCW and ECW it just got mediocre. When you buy out the competition, no need to be innovative. I'd rather watch local promos, Incredibly Strange and AAA.

I have no place here because I like wrestling a lot (though I only got back into it about 6 months ago), but I would like to point out to the non-fans that smart, cynical people can like wrestling too. Case-in-point: The Spoony One, Noah Antwiler is probably the most cynical, wise-cracking guy on the internet besides Yahtzee and he's a huge fan of wrestling, despite being critical of it at times. Though he does HATE HATE HATE TNA: Impact, but then that's just because the show is awful.

And I know most if not all of you did not say that wrestling was for dumb people, but I also know there are those who have that idea, which is just wrong.

I'd totally sit threw that version of Captain America if I was watching it live and the screw ups weren't done on purpose.

See these criticism I understand. It's not a medium everyone can enjoy. I get that. Just reminds me one time in an english class I drew a parallel to a novel character to Batman and some ***** in the class pipped in that Batman wasn't real, leading me to exclaim "THE FUCKING BOOK WERE READING ISN'T REAL EITHER! THATS WHAT FICTION MEANS! FUCK!"

Well, I don't like reality TV either. As for Pro-Wrestling..... I have nothing against the sport of wrestling, but pro-wrestling is not real wrestling - as in, if you have watch the olympic sport of wrestling, none of the moves or rules even remotely resemble what goes on in the pro-wrestling arena.

I've got NOTHING against those who find Pro-Wrestling entertaining. That's fine. It's designed to entertain, and since no one gets hurt (on purpose), it's absolutely fine. I have nothing against it.

But it's just not for me.

In response to your thread title: Have you stopped beating your wife yet?
Just wanted to point out that it falls under the fallacy of many questions.

I don't have a problem with wrestling. I don't find it interesting though. I know some people like the drama and the action but I'm not interested in the fake arguments, they always seemed to Soap opera for me, and I'm not interested in the action since it just doesn't interest me. More power to you for liking it though. I'm just here to support the "meh, I'm just not interested" crowd.

I hate it because it's fake. let me clarify, it's a fight, that is fake. In no way is a fight with a predetermined outcome interesting to me. It just makes no sense to me. I don't care about it at all. Also, I in no way mean this to be offensive, but I find the stories to be juvenile and uninteresting. I really have no problem with people who find it interesting, many of my closest friends are spongebob fans, and I dislike watching spongebob because I think the stories are juvenile and uninteresting.

Also, whenever I see wrestling on TV while I'm flipping through the channels, the wrestlers are always whining and dick-measuring like middleschoolers. I just get this huge feeling of: "Really, grow up and stop acting like your gods gift to the world."

Sorry about that last part, but you asked me why I hate wrestling and that's one of the biggest reasons.

I don't hate it, I just don't find it interesting. It also loses a lot of credit because I grew up watching boxing and there is nothing like seeing two grown men beat the hell out of each other for a while.

I don't like to say "fake". I'd say "planned out" is more accurate.

When you jump from the top rope you are actually landing on the guy. Chairs, tables, ladders, ect. are all Home Depot quality, and the fire on the tables is real fire which you are landing/getting burned on.

Sure, a punch may not be a real punch, but these guys get injuries for a reason.

Anyway, I like it for pretty much the same reasons you do, OP.

It's incredibly frustrating to watch. The characters are bland and the acting is really terrible. I went and watched an episode with some friends and it was really irritating to watch what appeared to be (cosmetically) elite athletes take 5 minutes to climb a ladder. I guess I got annoyed because I have a background in martial arts and I spent most of the time thinking "that is terrible technique" and "why is that pansy flinching? He just got a limp-wristed slap on the back."

I'm more a fan of tricking, gymnastics and other sports where I can sit back and watch people push the limits of strength, flexibility and grace. I can sit back and think "wow, humans really are incredible creatures!"

Poorly written, poorly acted, generally unlikable characters behaving in ways that I can in no way relate to while wearing awful looking costumes and engaging in ridiculous looking and poorly choreographed fights.

If it's fake it shouldn't look fake.
