Can't help but feel like you guys are stereotyping a little...
I'll be sure to tell my schools' anime club you think so.
Your school has an anime club? Where do you live??? Any school where I am would never allow something like that.

USA, Florida. I'm not getting more specific than that, though. :D

My school has lots of clubs. Ping Pong club, Film club, anime club, you name it.

There is something to be said about the depiction of the human experience in anime. The characters are far more believable than any soap opera and genuine human emotion comes across when you watch it. Granted, it varies wildly with whatever anime you're watching specifically. But their expressions, their voices, everything is much more exaggerated in anime as opposed to a standard TV program. It begs people to be more emotionally invested in the characters and touches you on a deeper level. They aren't people acting, they're people. By this, i mean you don't think of a character in a show as being an actor, you think of them entirely as that particular character as they are and as such - a more developed human whose journey through self-discovery and character evolution is far more believable than a disingenuous portrayal on some tired show. I also feel that anime has the capacity to deal with far heavier themes. A robot or alien for example pondering on or discovering what it means to be 'human'. Take the show Chobits, which demonstrates this exactly - you may initially dismiss it as being girly, but it's forcing us to ask the question "What makes us human?". Regular television shows just don't have the capacity to do this, and if they do, i find it generally falls flat. I guess the other aspect is the artstyle. It's just appealing. Although it can of course vary greatly, some anime artstyle is great, whereas i can't stand others. (like the DBZ one) I cannot stand mainstream anime shows like Naruto because, as a guy above me said, it's so unrepresentative of anime as a whole and yet it's most of what people will only see.

oh i certainly like anime/manga

though is true that fanboy/fangir-ism is soo annoying that could turn away any sensible attempt to relation.. and you know i would rather agree, then again the most ridiculous examples were already given and i would NEVER EVER wear cat ears, or any other anime paraphernalia (other than the occasional shirt with a really obscure reference)

True that that there are different types of people that are attracted to this for of entertainment, same as the variety on of genres in the anime although i would enjoy a slight dose of slapstick comedy, is not really my forte, being fairly interested in politics/military and philosophic affair i find my comfort zone in anime such as "ghost in the shell" among others within the genre.

Trust me (and probably austin here) it's not fun, it's a meeting room for weaboos and try-hards. You're better off just talking with the people here on an anime thread or one of the user-groups.

It's entertaining. Once you see through the bad stuff like the Big Three+Elfen Lied it's pretty cool. Just catching a few currently airing shows and watch a completed series in between is addictive.

Anime ranges from soul touchingly emotional to side splittingly funny to mind fuckingly odd or complex. There is an Anime or manga that can suit any need or desire.

i love some animes. like deathnote, it's not complicated but it is. it really makes you think and question the ethics of this world. and it isn't that long also, only 25 episodes(there were never anymore after that, idc what you say, there weren't. i refuse to accept them)
i however prefer manga because it has everything intact and less filler. not as complicated as let's say DBZ. also, i just think it can do a lot more because it's animated and able to be serious and not like american cartoons with no real plot or anything. animes are so big that it's just amazing. they can tell so much story and entertain and i just love it.

Same reason I enjoy movies and regular television.

I want to watch a story. Anime lets me do that.

Because of all the motivational posters and odd expressions I can make out of it:

I don't care what anime or what show, if it works and I have an idea, I do it.

Well, since we're generalising:

Here 'in the West', our storytellers focus on formula. They know the three acts, character arcs, season cliff hangers, and all that Joseph Campbell stuff back to front.
Movies like Iron Man are extremely formulaic, and easily predictable (did anyone here seriously not guess that Obadiah was the bad guy?) but enjoyable none the less because it's designed to be.
We rely on it very heavily - the industry is not set up to encourage originality, and movies released will revolve around a few current story templates and a few carbon copy characters.

But in the end, formula is a good thing. Without it movies are almost certainly going to be an unstructured mess.

In contrast Anime focuses on creativity - often running more like a 'stream of consciousness'. I read somewhere that Japanese productions are rarely the collaborative effort we see over here, but are controlled by the vision of a single person - and that makes perfect sense to me. Characters are introduced on an author's whim resulting in large casts, many unrelated themes are explored, and the world rules bend to allow any indulgence. Few have very strong plots, and even those that do often will often lose sight of them with long fanciful detours - sometimes permanently. I challenge anyone to predict an Anime's end.

I enjoy Anime now and again when I'm sick of guessing correctly, beat for beat, the final two acts of a movie.
When I've seen enough world weary anti-heroes defeat a clearly evil opponent, watching an Anime can be a breath of fresh air - enhanced with the novelty of a different culture/viewpoint.
That is why I own every Miyazaki film; because they are such a delightful change of pace. No plot, no goal, no 'ticking time bomb', no epic scope - just a wildly creative and enthralling world I can inhabit for an hour or two.

Of course my favourite movies/series in the world have come about when Anime makes an effort to structure the story, or when Hollywood decides to go out on a limb and try something new - because they often end up a perfect balance of the two extremes.

I think Naruto has enjoyed so much success because, while being super creative, it has roped itself in and crafted perfect intertwining themes and character arcs. If you ignore the fillers, and some of the pacing of the Anime vs the Manga, it is very well paced and keeps on message almost all the way through.
Or things like Fantastic Mr. Fox, Where the Wild Things Are or even Scott Pilgrim - they try something new, while retaining that natural underlying formula - and almost create their own genres.

...or then again, maybe these are just the racist generalisations of an ignorant gaijin.

This. I like anime because I find them fun and enjoyable.

I don't.
I used to, when I was ten, but then I grew out of it.

Besides, there are a lot of people at my school who like anime, and all of them are really weird. They all dress up in black; they make weird expressions with their faces, kind of like they are trying to emulate what anime characters do; and some of them even meow. I'm not kidding, they just randomly meow, because they think it's "anime" or whatever.

I'm sure that you're not all like that though?
Ugh and its those kinds of people who make anime look bad. Look just ignore those people and dont let them get to you.

Look heres a list of good anime

Witchblade (read this review [http://justreviews.net/article.php?id=24] before you watch it so you dont think its a show thats nothing but half naked women)
Soul Eater
Haruhi Suzumiya
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Deathnote
Evangelion
Samurai Champloo
Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop

And Le Chevalier D'eon

Another one is once i wached a few episodes of something about some girl Haruhi? i think who like started a club at a boarding school who used this shy girl's boobs to gain attention. That just grosses me out that some people like that (trying not offend anyone here)
Pfft that is NOTHING compared to what other animes do. And Haruhi doesnt do that all the time to that girl. I like it because its a fun show that makes you think differently about the universe. You just have to give it a shot, dont let stupid fans get to you.

For the most part I only LIKE select anime. I've watched a ton but only like a select few as I said. Mainly because they do something different
I'm nitpicky, too.

I think I'm most drawn to the art style (err...no pun intended, I swear!). Not the really silly art stuff, but the more...I don't know, refined style? I've always been a fan of it.

I didn't get a lot of exposure when I was younger. Video stores here didn't have a good rental selection, so I could only get really big titles or something one of the clerks had ordered. Recently, I've been Netflixing a lot of anime. A good chunk is crap (Even if it's pretty crap), but I'm enjoying Bleach far more than I ever thought I would.
