It's great for keeping in touch with friends and setting up events.
There are a lot of people on there that I would never have kept in touch with under more traditional communication means, but are still very good friends courtesy of the ease with which facebook allows conversation.
Also I dislike talking on the phone (the whole 'not seeing people's faces' thing. Still gets to me), but that's not an issue for me if I also can't hear their voice. Hence facebook chat (because no-one uses MSN etc. anymore)

As a co-existing advantage/disadvantage, it allows you to contact people given no more information than their name. Good if you need to send a message, bad if the person making use of such a facility is a little stalky...

Because it works and since all my friends are on it, it makes it easier to keep in touch. I love that people actually use their own names for their profile unlike some other *cough* myspace *cough* sites.

I keep my Facebook open. Mostly because there's a site that I always like to keep up since I first get on that constantly updates.
Otherwise, I don't really know why I like it so much.

I'm one of those people that has a tab opened to Facebook whenever he's on a computer with nothing more important to do. Even as I type this, I have a Facebook tab that I'll probably check after posting this message. I like Facebook because it's a good way to keep in touch with people and organize events. They don't even have to live far away -- I pretty frequently interact on Facebook with people who live a mile or less away from me, as well as people in other counties or states. It's also managed to become the standard IM program that everyone has, so I use it instead of my Yahoo, AIM, or Steam accounts when I want to do that with someone. It makes it much easier than the old days, when you had to have two or three accounts just to be sure you could contact everyone you wanted to. I do wish they would improve the code behind that chat program, but it's not bad enough to make me want to go against the grain, especially when the other services provided by the site are so good.

My girlfriend created a facebook page for me. She goes on it a lot to chat with friends and look at pictures. I, on the other hand, only got in to facebook because of the games (mostly zoo world and social city). After a couple months i realized how stupid the games were and i stopped playing them and for the most part going on facebook. fhe majority of the time i spend on facebook is just "liking" pages because i could really care less about what my friends are doing.

My friends convinced me to get a profile about a year back. I remember I got back from school and just decided to do it there and then. After about a month, I just got so bored with it, I now only use it to communicate with friends, and occasionally post stuff. I would speak to my friends with my phone, but it is ridiculously expensive.

I much prefer The Escapist.

A better question is asking why DON'T you like facebook? It's a free website where you can keep in touch with friends, chat, share pictures and organise things really quickly and easily.

I know I sound like an advert. But most of the people who moan about facebook are either doing it to be different or because their feeds get "overloaded" (in which case just unfriend that person or hide their posts from appearing on your feed, ditto with applications like Farmville - just block it).

Not really the the case. I don't have a Facebook page and never will unless it's absolutely necessary for something. I think it's ultimately cheap when it comes to human interaction. If I want to talk to my friends, I'll pick up a phone and talk to my friends; that's why I have one. I've seen what it does to other people, and I DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE THEM. I suppose that could sort of be like "doing it to be different", but I'm not doing it solely for the sake of being different. I'm doing it to not become a douchebag who think he/she needs to spend every last second of their life on Facebook because whatever is happening there is far more important than reality.

Oh yeah, and I have REAL FRIENDS that I have no trouble with "keeping track of" and "organizing events" with. Seriously? I've seen people on this thread cite those as the two most useful things about Facebook. If you can't "keep track" of your friends and can't organize them in some fashion for an event WITHOUT the use of Facebook, you are a terrible friend.
