I play games to pass the time, and to have fun. :3

I also use them to motivate myself to do assignment work when I really can't be bothered.

Because I am a fan of Escapism. Yes, yes I know I'm on the escpaist. But you know what I mean. I'm one of the few people who legitimately care MORE about the aesthetic (visual, spatial, audible) qualities of a game than it's gameplay.

I play Assassin's Creed, for example, because, not only will I never be able to actually BE a badass parkour-ing Renaissance Ninja, I'll never be able to glimpse the sheer beauty of Renaissance Venice period.
Similarly I won't be alive long enough to captain a sleek beautiful Warship to the farthest edges of our Galaxy with a kick-ass team of interplanetary warriors. And hence, because my life is infinitely more banal than ANY of those existences, I play Games.......

.....aaaaand that's the only honest answer you'll get OP ^_^

For the same reason I watch movies and TV shows, plus games are interactive. Games offer what a great movie offers and what a great game and/or sport offer; you can get the artistic-ness of a movie (story, great characters, emotional experience, etc.) plus the ability to improve you're gameplay skill very much like a sport offers or a game like chess offers. Video games have the unique ability to offer 2 great things in one package.

For the same reasons i read books, watch TV, go to theatre... Relax, entertainment and curiosity of "what else they can come up with".

Because life is a ***** and I would like to shoot it in the face and the only way I can get any sort of revenge is in video games.

I dunno, I think all the people saying "because they're fun" are right on the money.

For me? Because they're fun. Yes, seriously. Actually, belay that. No seriousness involved. Games are fun!

Escapism, pure and simple. Also I'm a bit of a Grodnard with playing old games, many of which are so unique and so awesome that when compared to most modern games it makes you wonder what happened and when did better graphics become more important than gameplay or storyline?

I play games as a form of escapism to help me deal with the fact that our reality is a bleak, unforgiving, and generally shitty place. No good deed goes unpunished, evil is met with success, and idiots hold the keys to the world. Carving up an giant robot with another giant robot wielding laser katanas then stealing the beaten robot's arm, stealing from oblivious shopkeepers, and heartlessly murdering scores of hapless villagers give me a feeling of catharsis that keeps me from whipping up a load of thermite bombs and launching them off a tall building in the downtown area. I am also a bit of a misanthrope and I have poor social skills. The character I play in many games, however, does not. He/she can be the most suave and charismatic this side of the Mojave Wasteland/Vvardenfell, or the sneakiest little wretch to slink through the shade.

tl;dr: I play games because reality sucks.

Because without them I would have to shoot real Nazi's in the face and even though they are Nazi's I would probably still get in trouble.
