Besides the obvious "It's fun" answer, I think I'm looking for "The Experience"; a game that resonates with my mind and soul in a way that no other piece of fiction will ever be able to do. Yeah, I know that I'll probably never find it, but maybe trying to find that experience will be the experience.

For the same reason I read, listen to music, watch films, occasionally experiment with hallucinogens, learn about science and hike; it's a lot more interesting than the drudgery of day-to-day life. It's challenging, entertaining, insightful, inspiring and a plethora of other words with positive connotations.

I play them because they're fun, it eases the stress from real life, and a lot of games have great stories.

Well other than they're fun, I like them because what I can do within the game, so basically the experience of what I'm offered.

Besides, I can come back after dying and I can do reckless murdering without the jail and prison rape aspect of it.

Because I like to immerse myself in new worlds. Worlds in which anything is possible and even a loser nerd like me can save everyone.

Also, because they are fun. And fun is good.

I don't know, why are we here in the first place?. There are alot of unanswered questions on this earth and there far from being resolved.

A good game triggers my imagination to think of new creative things. I project my own ideas and concepts on the framework of the existing game. so I am never playing the game that was sold, I am righting my own narrative filling in the gaps that are left unexplored behind invisible walls.

That's why I wish games would not try so hard to be compelling dramatic epics, its patronizing. In some ways playing a map for the first time in Counter Strike is richer with story than all the over done dialogue of most games could ever hope to accomplish. Its called subtlety.

For the same reason I watch movies and TV shows, plus games are interactive. Games offer what a great movie offers and what a great game and/or sport offer; you can get the artistic-ness of a movie (story, great characters, emotional experience, etc.) plus the ability to improve you're gameplay skill very much like a sport offers or a game like chess offers. Video games have the unique ability to offer 2 great things in one package.
This is so true, and I have never thought of it in those terms before. the artness of movies the competition of sport. Games are awesome.

well put!

There are the three basic reasons people play games: for enjoyment, to express their brilliance, and to prove they're better than other players.

Like most forms of entertainment, gaming also provides a shared experience which can be debated and analyze to help us engage in conversation with other people socially, in order to help us better understand each other's point of view.

Immersing ourselves in another's role also allows us not only to take a break from our lives but experience life from a point of view other than our own, helping us learn and grow as a person. The repetition of basic problem solving educates us as well as inspires new ways of thinking and new ideas, encouraging creativity and design.

I concur with your statement, my good man.
