Why do you think atheists are abundant on the Internet?

Because it takes a certain degree of intelligence to use a computer. Although that's becoming increasingly debatable.

I think it might be that atheists believe that they are contrary to the norms of society and are trying to look cool online.

Because Atheists are so few in number (at least in America), they tend to stick to places where they wont be persecuted. You cannot be harmed through a computer screen. Despite what society says, anything other than Christianity and Judaism is taboo. Even being a Deist is enough to spawn persecution, and wide spread fear. It kills your social life, and reputation.

The internet gives a persecuted minority to have a voice without fear. At least that's how I see it.

Also this video seems to explain it better:

I have to say that I misread Deist as Dentist, which made that hilarious. Not that I am an anti-dentite or anything.
Really good video, only touched on propoganda 8 mins in, first part was brain food :)

It's odd, I see a LOT more religious people on the internet than in real life. Probably because I live in the UK, where the attitude to religion is basically 'if you have it, fine, but don't expect me to give even one-tenth of a shit.' Nearly everyone I know in real life is either atheist or technically religious but not enough to ever pray or go to church.

The same reason that religious people are abundant in media in the real world. I've seen more news reports about religious terrorism and the WBC cunts more than atheism on TV.

Well, why? I'm not entirely sure, and it makes me curious. My thought is that either it's just simply that the vast majority of internet dwellers (forumites, Youtubers, etc.) are atheists, or there's a bigger religious population than everybody think but they're much less vocal.

I have nothing against atheists, by the way.

Also, I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Religion section or here since it's Internet-talk as well. So if I'm wrong, feel free to move the thread mods. Apologies.
It's a new generation, one that drinks and gets high young and thinks god is on par with the tooth fairy and the easter bunny. This new generation also loves the internet, shockingly.

Plus people are getting smarter and technology is evolving so instead of blaming something on an all powerful deity, who was just in a creative mood ... we can say "this happened 'cos of this".

99% of people are atheist therefore 99% of internet users are atheist. Its really not that surprising.

Also it depends where you look, Christians for example are more into prayer and bible study than computer games as a rule so you'd be better off looking on a Christian forum if you wanted to find Christians. Just a thought.
I've got to disagree with the numbers, although I can't find any numbers that aren't highly subjective.

At Uni, the Christian Union is 400ish + people, CathSoc is 100ish people and Rock Solid (Christians from Asia) must be about 100 ish too. And then we have Jainism, Islam, Buddhism etc... By comparison the Secular Society is tiny.

But those are terrible examples because christianity stresses a strong bond on community and togetherness whereas with atheists, it's just other cool like-minded people to hang out with.

Looking at my friend network is terrible too because I just randomly ended up being friends with a lot of christians and church life and not liking going out and getting smashed quite firmly pushed me into social networks full of christians.

However just from what I feel, most people are meet just don't care either way. They haven't really thought about it and when pushed they hazily say they're on one side without actually having much conviction. One friend says she's probably call herself christian, but she admits that's just because she associates that with being British, kinda and others say agnostic/atheist etc in the same way. My brother says he doesn't believe in God but he could imagine things happening to him in the army that would change that.

So I figure 99% of people aren't either .25% of people are 'militant' atheist as in involved with the atheist community, strong in their belief and the sort to share funny photos over the internet and .75% are religious.

(Silly numbers but I hope it conveys the idea)
Ah well when I say atheist I basically mean not Christian (other other minority faith). A secular person who hasn't really thought about it one way or the other I would classify as atheist. You dont have to do anything or believe anything to be an atheist, you just have to refrain from actively believing in God.
As for "militant atheists", well these people form a subset of convicted and vocal atheists, however I don't think you need to be in anyway convicted or vocal to be atheist.
I think you're slightly confused about the terminology here. Atheist means someone who purposefully believes that God/a god/gods DON'T exist. Whereas what your talking about is more of agnostic, where you just haven't given thought to it and don't care whether there is or isn't.
I disagree. From my understanding of the term, if don't have a belief in god you're an atheist whether you thought about it or not . You might also be agnostic (as most atheists are), but that's besides the point.

Because it would seem hypocritical if a religious man was using technology.

Jokes aside, Because no one can picture a man of god going: "PENIS! LOLOLOLOLO. U MAD BRO? TITTIES OR GTFO!"

I guarantee half the internet atheists go to church with mommy and daddy every Sunday. There's a lot of them who are posers because being atheist is so edgy and cool. It's that simple.
Your parents can compel you to go to church. They cannot compel you to actually believe. I'm proof of that.

It's because some people on the internet automatically assume that, because they don't believe in a God, they are smarter than those who do, and I think all of us have been on the internet long enough to learn how many "smart" people love to prove how much "smarter" they are than other people in order to recieve some sort of self satisfaction that they apparently can't accquire in any other manner.

I think it's more the areas of the internet you go to. Youtube, 4Chan and here are all godless hives of scum and villainy, so it stands to reason most people would be atheists.

You need to check out places like [link]http://www.christianforums.com/[/link]. You know, the god-fearing hives of scum and villainy.
Oh I was going to go in to a fit of rage with your post but your last sentence redeemed you

OT: I would assume you are looking at religous vids or websites well thats your reason why you see so many atheists I think what it is is that atheists like debates and as such head to where there are many religous folk to debate them

P.s ifyou are an atheist like me that like to debate religion like me do it somewhere appropriate like the various debate subreddits of reddit.com instead of upseting or angering someone who wants to be around other religous people or likes watching religous videos etc

However if they plan on voting for Rick Perry Do what you want to them

It is the nature of people that they group together. Usually with a likeminded group.

Atheists are very common in certain countries in others the atheists that are out, aka decided they are not believers in any way. Well they are less common, don't get me wrong allot of believers really are just lazy followers. That are just going by the label because their mother/father did taught them so. But it has no real meaning to them!

Being a minority still the atheists do find the Internet to be a place to find other like minded people. Same reason why you can see so many LGBT sites.

In the end it shouldn't matter if someone is a believer in something or not. What matters is what one does in their life and lets say that religion has some negative by effects there.

Yet to the same sound an army of non believing, yet easily influenced people can march to do evil things.

Religion is just a softener, makes things easier for the ruling parties.

For the same reason public transportation is filled with religious people and homeless people?

Other than that I got nothing, well other than the idea that the internet loves to hate everything so religion is a nice juciy target.
