Why do you think there's such a huge population of metalheads here?

Just curious. Most of the other forums I'm a member of has a much lower concentration. I'm not complaining since I do like a bit of metal myself, however.

So, Escapist, why do you think it is?

alot of escapists are musicians, myself included.

metal and rock are the only mainstream genres of music that i can think of that use more popular instruments (guitar, drums, bass ect.)

Maybe the general population of gaming listens mostly to metal, so the people that are part of a gaming website would most likely be into metal and it is pretty much the only mainstream genre that doesn't get ridiculled by said culture.

Because once you get through our hardened, angry exterior you realize that we are nerds just like everyone else.

That may have been stereotyping. I don't really have a hardened, angry exterior, but I do love me some metal.

Metal is one of the few genres of music that takes talent and has originality to it. I've never heard of metal being considered mainstream, unless you consider Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine metal (which they aren't). Escapists know good stuff.

There's a correlation between joining this site and generally being different.

Liking metal is one of the easiest ways to be different.

There is a huge population of metalheads, everywhere.
Metal has been around for a very long time and isn't going anywhere thanks to it's fanbase!

Video Games and Metal have one thing(among others) in common: They're both have a "larger than life" and "fantasy" vibe to them.

Find a game with epic battles and you will probably find about a thousand metal songs about an epic battle as well.

That's how I think about it, anyway.

If you're talking Power Metal maybe.

The kind of people who mostly populate the internet, and actually use it for things besides facebook, and have learned of forums and other things to do on it just in general seem to overlap with certain other interests. Its still fairly connected to nerd culture, metal culture, and also anime fans. When torrents were first getting popular fansub group were a pretty big part of what all torrents were used for. These are the kind of people who shaped a lot of the internet's culture.

Metal music isn't as mainstream, especially these days, so the internet is a perfect place for underground music to get shared and discussed. Its a lot easier to find someone else who likes death metal over the internet than in person since its quite an acquired taste. Meanwhile if you just want to find someone who likes shit on the radio you can go talk to some 16 year old girls.

"Different" should be taken with a grain of salt if you actually think about how many metal-heads there are in the world...(not that it's a bad thing)

That's an excellent point. I'm interested in metal and rock mostly because I play the guitar. Otherwise I probably wouldn't be.

Personally, I don't like metal: never found the appeal of it, and I don't like music with guitars that much (strange, innnit?).

But 'metalheads' are not at all a minority.

The "larger than life" vibe still applies. Metal from all different sub-genres sound "massive". Video Games also often have a "massive" plot or world to them(in both meaning and narrative).

Granted, this doesn't apply to oldie games like Mario or Zelda...

I guess I can see what you're saying. Though in my own opinion it seems like a somewhat stretched comparison.

You're right, but most of the people here are between about 14 and 24, when people usually like autotuned crap, so metal is different among those groups.
