A government of a superpower like America is whether you like it or not, extremely powerful and influential. It controls or influences a great many dealings in the world, but can you trust all of this responsibility to a group of people you don't even know properly? And to some you may never even see in your life?
If I was American, i'd find it hard to trust the government, but I have every faith that the American government has the ability to saaay, protect me and my homeland, secure my prosperity the best it can, and give me something to believe in.
Also popular culture has it instilled in us that the American government is in a constant espionage battle with everyone. Conspiracy theorists constantly think that we're living in the 1950's/60's, and your friendly neighbour Vladmir Ivanovski should be distrusted at all times, and 9/11 is totally an inside job, and the American government masterminded the death of Kennedy by hiring Elvis Presley to shoot him with aliens. I don't believe in all of these conspiracies at all, I just think it's a rather unfortunate turn of cultural events drummed up completely by accident by the USA government. They can deny them all they want, but they can't prove anything to these silly conspirators.
Lastly, free speech. I've often said that free speech is overrated, and often the world views America's views as very one-sided and jaded at times. Take the Westboro baptist church, KKK, Brooklyn street gangs, LA street gangs, Neo-nazi's, church of scientology-- All born from the 'gift of free speech.' I think you'll all agree that America has constitutionally shot themselves in the foot. Which they can't help now of course, it's forever embedded into the American constitution. But if I had to chose, I'd of set down some regulations on the whole free speech things. To maximize the amount of free speech for just reasons, and minimize the amount of hate and stupidity.
