Why are there so many McDonald's even when everyone perfectly understands that the food is mass-produced, low-quality, nearly-poisonous filler?
Haha. So true. Why is Justin Beiber so popular ? Why are these crappy Hollywood movies such big hits ?

People have shitty taste or really don't know any better.
You guys are so right bro bro.

Instead of McDonalds, we should have only food places that cost $100 just for lunch, right bro bro?

I mean, people have shitty taste or are just ignorant. It couldn't possibly be about convenience or affordability!

And I thought I was going to be the smart ass of this thread...

Anyhow, the more important question is, why do these threads keep popping up? I mean does not one use the search bar?

To answer your questions, I assume it sales well because lots of people bought it. I assume they bought it because they think its fun or their friends bought it and they want to play with their friends.

If another one of these threads pops up again, I am going to hit a baby with stick. A very large stick.
I did use the search bar, and I didn't find anything in the last three month. Why don't you stop being a smartass and point me to a thread that talks about this specifically.
Indignator is Indignant. How cute. Anyhow, at the risk of getting a warning and suspension I would like to tell you that a. I am not going to waste my time searching for them and giving you direct links.

Second, if you type in Why does CoD sell so well or CoD hate train or Call of Duty or anything like that, you will find multiple threads that either a). talk about this or b.) derail into something along the lines of what you were asking. You just actually have to..ya know..read past the titles. And really...why were you asking that? It seems obvious. People are buying it because its fun or because their friends are buying it. It's not rocket science my good sir.

They give their audience what they want; and their audience is loyal.
Honestly, I doubt they're all that loyal. If there was a COD game that the base thought was truly shitty, I bet they'd head to greener pastures.

They definitely, however, give the audience what they want.

Why do movies like The Expendables do well? Why is Justin Bieber popular? Why is the main stream main stream? Easy it's accessible. It is easy to get in, have fun, and get out. One does not lightly play hardcore games just like people dont lightly get into David Lynch films.
Except that each Call of Duty is the equivalent of an Avatar or Titanic.

After reading some replies, let me address a common point that is being brought up - it's fun. Sorry, but this just is not a good enough reason.
Yes it is. That's a straw man argument. You're implying that anything that's fun should sell as much as anything else that's fun.
If fun is the only criterion that determines how well a game sells, then yes if Game A is as fun as Game B then they should both sell equally well. But they don't because there are other reasons. I am asking about those reasons.

Also, maybe my argument is not correct, but it definitely is not a straw man argument.

OK, why is it the game a lot of people want to play.

Well then, don't waste your time replying at all.

You're essentially looking for validation on your points, and the Escapist happens to be a good spot for this.

So yeah, you don't really care about knowing why, because anyone and everyone knows that the Escapist will mostly stick to one side of the argument.
Your psychic powers are extraordinary.
Sarcasm "is just not a good enough reason", in your own words. You haven't exactly replied to what I've said.
You're right. I wasn't really responding to your larger argument, which is why I didn't quote your entire post. I really shouldn't have done that, it just irks me one someone makes such audacious statements.

Therefore, I can conclude from my studies that Call of Duty is basically facebook with guns.
Now that really is Battlefield 3's thing. I actually don't mind Battlelog, possibly because I don't really socialise with the people I play BF3 other than putting a squad together.

Because its formula pushes all the buttons of instant gratification. It plays gamers' reward circuits, with cheeky tricks such as autoaim and killstreaks. It deludes players into thinking that they're MR. BIG BAD BOSSMAN. Everyone is good at CoD, it doesn't matter if they're skilled or unskilled, the game makes them out to be a "pro". There are no consequences for failure, just win, win, win. And that makes a lot of people addicted to the gameplay.

I personally find that very creepy, having been tricked into MW2 and BLOPs... I stopped playing once I realised just how CoD manipulates your mind.

It is FUN. I know it is hard to believe, and while a lot of people here will argue that it is not, that is their OPINION. In fact, this is an a opinion very few people have, thus why it still sells so much.

My question is why does everyone care and get so bent out of shape over it? Seriously there's better things in life to rage about.

It sells well because the last one was fun so the person gets the next one, and then that was fun so they'll get the next one. Meanwhile their friends play it split screen with them and get home and go fuck, I want to play it now, they go get that then they play it with their friends split screen. Then they play together and pull other people in.

Because it is addicting despite its flaws.

Also because its one of the best time killers, I can do so much with it in one hour then I could without it.

I get annoyed when people think their favorite obscure indie game should sell as much while Call of Duty is used to control the "Sheeple". Rage at something else people.

Yeah, I guess my post was a bit inflammatory as well. Sorry about that. But I still believe that theories and guesses should never replace actual accounts from people who actually play the game .
Agreed. This is why I asked the question.

I really want to flame the OP, but i'm going to take the high road.

COD has a large playerbase, because FPS games are the most popular segment in gaming. COD is above and beyond the best FPS game. It is fun, but it is also more fun.

The only way you can surpass COD is to make a multiplayer FPS game that is regarded by the masses to be better than COD.

Stupid people. I'm not saying that stupid people don't buy other FPS' but CoD is on it's 7th game or something and it's mostly a rehashed copy of the game before it.

I kinda understand your question, and yes, if it's simply because it's "fun", then why Psychonauts didn't sell so well to begin with?, same with an astonishing myrad of other "fun" games that won't simply sell millions, they sell half a million if they get lucky.

Why does CoD sell so well?, why other "fun" games don't sell as well?, what part of the human brain does CoD touches (indirectly of course) to make many people buy it and play it so much?.

Sadly, I don't know, but it's a good question nonetheless.
