We should get rid of mountain dew.

Over generalization, anyone? Listen, people hate a country because of how it is perceived by other countries. North Korea probably has a shit ton of awesome people in it, but guess what, people fucking hate it. Same applies to America. It's the stereotypes and leaders produced by a country that people hate. Also, stop using the "every country has nationalism" excuse. That's as justified as saying that you're morbidly obese because "every person eats".

I believe that there are very few people here in Western countries, and America's other allies, even in America itself that truly hate it with a passion. I think on the Internet especially most of it is just people making fun of America just because it is edgy/funny to do so.

Besides people hating America does not make the whole world stop, I doubt very seriously if many people care if others hate it and just go about their day. I myself am actually rather flattered that there are people out there that care enough about America to hate it, it takes a lot of passion to hate and if our own citizens and leaders had enough passion in loving our country as those people did in hating it then we would be a lot better off. Also when people make fun of America I also appreciate that too because it means that we have done something noteworthy or crazy enough that it deserves to be laughed at, and it is important that we do laugh at ourselves because the way we have been taking things too seriously is going to drive us insane.

I think a fair amount of it can be explained by history:

Up until the mid-20th century, the United States was very isolationist. The general consensus was that whatever happened outside our borders was none of our business. Because of this, we never really bothered to learn about foreign nations. This lifestyle was still feasible given the lack of globalization at that time.

After the country's involvement in the World Wars however, we suddenly found ourselves as the most powerful nation on earth. It was decided at this point to broaden our horizons and spread our influence around the world, partly to fight communism but also as a "second Manifest Destiny" of sorts (the "Wild West" had been pretty much tamed by that point, after all).

We felt (and still feel to a lesser extent today) that if we brought our culture and values abroad, people would enthusiastically embrace it. Unfortunately our lack of knowledge regarding pre-established customs and ideals of other countries bit us in the ass, and the stereotype of the "ugly American" started to take root.

Now in an age where any dickwad can type whatever the hell they want for instant notoriety online, the stereotype has only strengthened. All it takes is a few lunatic fringe Americans (or a lunatic fringe "news" network that shall remain unnamed) to post something idiotic and it seems to validate all the negative aspects of the country from the last half-century or so. People tend to remember negative things more than positive ones, after all.

Personally I don't hate my country at all. I'm patriotic, but in a realistic sense. I like to compare it to the love a child has for his/her parents and how that love changes when they become an adult. You have the "America, love it or leave it" blind patriot that refuses to acknowledge that mistakes have been made, much like how a young child is in their "my parents are the greatest/my dad could beat up your dad" phase of growth. I on the other hand acknowledge and am grateful for the positive aspects of my country while still being aware of its faults and shortcomings, much like how an adult views their parents with the maturity of age.

Remember the original point of "this is what people believe"? Well, that's pretty much what we see from outside the America. Also, Democrats want to tax everybody but they also want to tax the rich more heavily, while most people at Fox have repeatedly expressed their will to tax the poorest instead of the rich (who have all the fucking money While the poor control about 3% of American wealth), the people who make less than 22000$ a year for a family of 4. And I'm also well aware that all news stations are biased and the left has zealots as well but I'm being a bit biased here myself because I agree more with those zealots from the left.
You make a fair point, but I was trying to say how people arrive at those kinds of beliefs.

Right now the Democrats (at least Obama's democrats) don't want to tax the rich. In fact they seem extraordinarily opposed to it. Who they want to tax only sounds rich to those that are lower middle class or poor. They want to tax the upper middle class. The say anyone that makes over $250,000. Which right now is quite a large amount (in reality it makes them a small buisness owner or above). However last time this was proposed they quickly started dropping the cut off, it reached all the way down to $125,000 last time it came up in talks.

A bipartisan group in the house actually wants to do away with the tax loopholes the wealthy and corporations commonly use to avoid taxes. Influential members of both parties, and quite a few economists agree that simplifying the tax code (and in the process lowering and removing a tax bracket) will generate far more revenue then Obama's plan will. The biggest opposition to this plan is Obama's administration. The same plan that started to gain momentum in the debt talks, and the same plan that Obama threatened to veto if passed.

Because you have no health care system, because your education system sucks, because you have a "bible belt," because our government models many of its policies on the ludicrous decisions of your dumbass leaders, because you are spending billions of dollars and roping other hapless countries into a foolish drug war, and because you are a modern empire that your leadership and electorate have clearly proven that you don't deserve and aren't responsible enough to have in the first place.

That's why.
Love the logic behind your posts. Can you cite a single example to your already flimsy argument? I'll settle for a direct example of one of our governmental policies leading to the direct change of any other nations policy that's worth a damn.

Also politicians kind of suck everywhere. No sense on hating on ours alone.

And why is it that you can't ever see the pros of our country? Yes, we have roped in innocent people into our wars. So has nearly every other super power in the world. We have sent billions in aid to other countries, and forget just for a second that we shouldn't be interfering with others business, and realize that yes, although many dollars were simply stuffed into the pockets of corrupt politicians in the country, many more dollars were used to help the citizens.

I'm straying from civility. I simply wish to see an example of the arguments you have produced, that are either completely obvious from many, many other perspectives, or have written and confirmed sources.
they also clearly forgot about the difference between healthcare and health insurance which is more ironic since we have both of those. are education system is shitty but no where near as bad as people randomly claim. and useing the "bible belt" argument is just prejudice. especially when it's just a simple term used to describe an area of a country that happens to have a strong religious foothold.

i also love how people from other countries like to call us an empire even though nothing about us fits the definition of empire since we took control of the Philippines islands. (which we no longer own)

so really alot of american hate comes from prejudice and (ironically) ignorance.

Yeah that's all true but speaking as an American and a history buff we've still been dicks to a lot of countries and it's just plain old more fun to sit around bashing a country for it's negative affect on the world then sitting around talking about how it has helped the world and recently we've done a bit more dicking...hmm lemme re phrase that we've helped many people in recent years but when we mess up it's much more noticeable/noteworthy. Personally I'd withdraw all foreign aid for a few years then if the world can handle itself without us we'll spend the money on fixing schools jobs and the like. If they can't then I'm sure the EU could step up.
yeah i noticed they help a bit too much and i don't think the EU has any cash to spare at the moment

Well, I could mention people like Bush and Perry...

Anyways.

Eh, America has many a problem, many a pro, many a con. It's large, it's pretty much the only english-speaking group on the internet other than England and Canada, and between those two, Canada is, well... Canada, and England seems like it might slowly be catching up to America with its cons, so...

America is the target.

I think.

(America was more helpful in WWII than so many people claim, but it was less helpful than others claim, really a middle ground it was at with helping.

Speaking as an American, well, there's just so many of us to hate. Because we allow everyone but Adolf Hitler in here without many questions, you have some of the best and some of the worst people in the world here, free to say and do whatever they wish, so long as it's not illegal. You have the arrogant ones, the racists, the hyper religious and the hyper atheists. The Bible Belts, those who sue you for saying that their dog isn't attractive, those who sit on their asses, pump out 15 kids and live entirely off welfare, so forth and so on.

I've spoken to several of my euro friends on the subject, and they say their main problem with America is it's arrogance, and it's rather annoying policy of jumping into every single fight it's not wanted in, usually leaving it's "Democracy" behind when it finally goes. It's been coined "Passive Aggressive Invasion".

Before I get beaten into the ground, I should point out that I'm about as patriotic as it comes. I love this country, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. I should also point out that "Everyone here hates the USA" is a pretty big generalization. I doubt that the haters of America, just like the haters of England, Scotland, Wales, Korea, South America and Madagascar are anything more than an extremely vocal minority.

Im pretty new to this site so i may be out on a lim here. But is it not possible that you are overreacting a little.
Or maybe the community is overreacting. You have to stop define USA as one thing. USA is a country with 300 million people. thousands of different kinds of places, religions, jobs, and you name it. How can you say that its one country when the reality of your country is unique to you as an individual. it probably has a lot of similarities with other peoples americas but it still is unique to you, because nobody else is exactly like you.

Now you say that the pros outweigh the cons, maybe they do, maybe they dont. But why is it so important that it is one way or the other?
you say that its a good place to live in. Thats good for you. Then if you believe that and feel that way then that is ok.
But you dont have to feel bad because of your congress not being able to pass solve their differences with the economy.
They cant do it and thats to bad for the economy. But it doesnt make USA a "BAD" country. It probably isnt a point in your favor;) But it doesnt really matter.

If you could stop saying "greatest country on earth" every time you want to describe USA and maybe just seattle for "a really great country.
If you make it a competition then of course people are going to fight back. drag out every pice of dirty laundry that you guys have and point out how much better somebody else is in that category.
Its not a competition!

You have your problems i wont disagree there, but just the same there is a lot of good things with you to. but just accept that you dont have to be best all the time, accept that you are unique without calling yourself american and I guarantee that the haters will come around.

PS, I live in sweden where a book has just been published that pictures our king as a retarded playboy who's been spending his entire married life running around humping 22 year old models with his other spoiled brat friends. Thats the guy who represents sweden all over this globe.
But does that really make me a bad person for being swedish?

Now please reply and counter if you would like. always love a good argument:)

Oh my fucking God, not this again. Everybody makes fun of everybody and everything. From one countryman to another, quit bitching about how people on the internet hurt your sense of misplaced national pride.

That's more of your government's problem than ours, to be honest.
