I'm not looking for plain validation of my own views, I want to know how to enrich my understanding of what makes Oblivion so great and hopefully improve the experience for myself, if you actually READ the comments I've been making I'm not saying it's 100% a bad game just an okay game with a lot of wasted potential.

I'm also potentially buying Skyrim which looks vastly improved and was hoping that with some input I might find a way to make Oblivion kill some time until I get to try it

I admit now thought that making the thread was stupid because I needed to say more in my original post, thankfully some people like Mike Richards have been helpful instead of just hiding behind a shield of "It's perfect, stop complaining" and "Opinions"

TL;DR I THINK THE GAME IS PLAYABLE BUT COULD BE BETTER, THE VIEWS IN THE ORIGINAL POST ARE WHAT I THINK HOLDS THE GAME BACK FROM BEING BETTER MOST OF WHICH SEEM TO HAVE BEEN FIXED IN SKYRIM.
What you want sounds like reviews. So go look at reviews.

It's a crap game. It's not an RPG, by any means. It's just an intensely polished mediocre game. And it's a beth/zenimax game. That's all they churn out. Shiny polished turds, that get million dollar marketing campaigns. Todd Howard can't design a game to save his sorry arsehole. They should let interplay/masthead show them how to make a REAL game.

There's a user at another forum who loves this game way too much and hates all Japanese video games, especially jRPGs, that I wish could see this topic. It would amuse me.

Anyway, there's a lot of things I don't like about Oblivion. And among those are the facial designs on many NPCs. Not just Oblivion, but certainly Morrowind, as well. Some of the faces can just be... ugh. It's bad, uncanny looking, sometimes. I hate the way Bethesda designs faces, seriously. It's no wonder the Elder Scrolls has such a healthy modding community. Everyone wants to remove those hideous faces.

And then there's jumping. It's like they designed this game to be a first person shooter. Because the jumping is simply horrid. I mean, jumping doesn't have to look awful. But it does. It's embarrassingly horrid.

Also, people seriously overestimate the amount of content in this game. There really isn't all that much to do in the game. Sure, there's a lot of area to explore. But when has being expansive ever been something that particularly added to the gameplay about any game? Video games aren't about exploring. And exploring isn't gameplay. Otherwise you can call Second Life a "game" because you can explore it. Who cares how big a world is? It's all about how you're able to interact with it.

I remember someone elsewhere mentioning that Beth/zenimax games arent really games, they're amusement parks, that you explore and roam around, but they arent games in which you do much of anything else. That sounds about right.

don't worry OP/TC I didn't like it either I'm sure the story was awesome but FP controls, and overall slowness of everything bored me WAY too fast, same as Fall Out 3 and NV

on the plus side Demon/Dark Souls is a lot like Elder Scrolls, just faster and no first person :)
I do plan on giving Skyrim a chance it does look interesting

It's fun eh? I make a cat man and he runs about on the surface of water, see he does so as he dislikes water given that he is a cat-man. Eh?
Here's the problem, his race is named Khajiit. If you don't even care about that then of course you won't get into the world. Both Morrowind and Oblivion tell you about their world in books that you can find throughout the world, it's optional if you read them. I think it's a fantastic way to give the player just as much background as they want.

Each race has it's own perks and I guess the Khajiit can walk on water, I see nothing strange about that. I have never played as a Khajiit but it sounds like fun.

Oblivion won't hold your hand but it does have a wonderful journal to help you when you want it. The complaint about asking for directions is just petty. You want to fill the screen with everything worded as a question? It would accomplish nothing. What next, you want a dialogue wheel with a voiced protagonist? This isn't Mass Effect (though ME is also a great game, different but great).

There is only one reason to hate Oblivion in my opinion and that's because it ruins other games for you. The complete freedom offered to you in Oblivion almost ruined Dragon Age for me as Oblivion proved that you didn't have to have invisible walls and that you could walk from place to place(none of this click on your destination stuff) and still fit the game on one DVD.
I was attempting a dash of humour there, seemingly unsuccessfully given your response. Silly filly indeed...in ten seconds flat.

Personally all elder's scrools i have played (okey it's just Morrowind and oblivion) bored me to death. They drop you in a big world with barelly any indication on what to do and the plot advence at snail speed.

Comments like this irritate the shit out of me.

So because people liked Oblivion that makes them a *insert word I refuse to use* (that word also irritates the shit out of me).

I liked Oblivion and if someone asks why I liked it I tell them. That does not make a person a *insert word I refuse to use* it means they liked a sodding game.

I won't say it didn't have it's faults but I will say I didn't have faults with it for long. Being a member of the modding community over at Nexus a lot of issues got fixed pretty fast by the guys and gals over there.

I don't think i'd have liked the game nearly as much on console without any mods though.
Because you claimed to have found faults with the game that does not make you a fanboy.

Sadly, I have seen many people call it the greatest RPG ever and even one of the greatest games ever, while blindly ignoring any faults. It's comments like those that irritate the shit out of me.

Also, I never accepted things getting fixed by mods to be a reason to make a game better. If a mod fixes a problem, good, but that does not excuse the fact that the problem existed in the first place.

I love Oblivion to death, but I also acknowledge its myriad of flaws. The speechcraft minigame is a joke, as well as the insultingly small amount of voice actors (though I have to give massive props to Sean Bean). I do my best to look past its flaws, and it draws me in every time I fire it up. I've been playing Oblivion for the past 5 years, and I'm honestly a little sad to see it go at the hands of Skyrim. Skyrim will be a bittersweet pickup for me.

I think the main problem here is hype. Bethesda hyped the shit out of Oblivion, so people went in with VERY high expectations. I for one loved it, but you may not share this opinion.
