Well, try Morrowind and see where it gets you. By the look of what you didn't like in Oblivion you should have loads of fun.

People of the internet, lend me your eyes:

The internet is filled with idiots...

*Idiots who ask questions,

*Idiots who have answers,

*Idiots who fight for things in the most meaningless way,

*Idiots who pride themselves on things they had no involvement in,

*Idiots who don't get Irony, or claim to know but actually don't.

We must stay away from such idiots, for their idiocy is infectious.

But seriously though, opinions? How do they work?
You forgot one:

*Idiots who makes posts to call everyone else idiots.

Seriously though, when did it become cool to refer to everyone else as idiots?
I see you missed the Irony of my post.

I was all with the Oblivion hype back in the days, and I pre-ordered the game. It looked great and I was sure they fixed the problems that Morrowind had.

But damn. To this day, Oblivion is probably one of the worst RPGs I have ever played. It's so much worse than Morrowind, which wasn't a super awesome game in the first place.

Now, Skyrim -looks- like it's going to fix what went wrong with Oblivion, but who the hell knows? Bethesda are masters of making the first 5 - 10 hours of gameplay awesome, and then letting the game fall straight down.

Sure, you can make Morrowind and Oblivion both quite playable with mods, but that does not mean the game should have 10/10 rating bloody everywhere. Having a good modding support, does not justify the completely retarded design choices you make. Many reviews of the game mentioned a bad thing, and then said "but you can fix this with mods."

Everything can be modded, and with enough time and dedication, every piece of shit game can be modded to a better game. But you can't release modding tools and expect the community to make the game for you.

I am not expecting anything from Skyrim. I will try it, but I'm not expecting anything. I'll probably be disappointed anyway.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to hate the game but it just seems rather mediocre to me and is riddled with so many bad design choices and bland art direction that I can't seem to get into it like I have done with other RPG's, be they Deus Ex, Fallout, Planescape Torment, Baldurs Gate etc.
I think you've solved your own riddle right here. All four of those games are notable for their extremely strong narrative structure. It's quite possible...probable, even...that this is the way your tastes run in RPGs, and you're looking for this in Oblivion and you're not finding it because Bethesda is absolutely crap when it comes to constructing compelling narratives.

What makes Oblivion work for me is the huge, immersive world I can lose myself in. I can wander from point to point, blundering into dungeons and towns, going on adventures...I can buy a house and join a guild...there's 100+ hours of game play, easily...without ever touching the hackneyed main story line. That kind of open, sandbox world can be hugely compelling if you enjoy that sort of thing, especially if you're playing on a PC and have the benefit of using mods to further tweak the game play to suit your fancies. It doesn't mean I don't like to have my hand held and be walked through an excellent story, as I would in a Bioware game. I like that kind of game too. They're both excellent, they're just excellent at very different things.

Yeah you're probably onto something there. I do tend to get sucked into a great story and Oblivion is lacking in the narrative department in all fairness, that said I sometimes love a good open world roaming game like Fallout New Vegas just to see what I can find or even Just Cause 2 (but granted that has a lot of silly entertainment value)

Also I'd like to thank everyone who is actually taking part in the discussion, I think I'm going to try modding out Oblivion and also getting my hands on Morrowind. I'm not a closed minded gamer by any measure, I think the whole topic poppoing up stems from being excited about Skyrim but not having anything like it to play except Oblivion.

And now, FLAMEWAR.

OT: fantastic, you are probably one of many, just like any other game you don't like. well done.
Now i'm off to find less trolling.
And to people like this, actually read the bloody topic, I'm not trolling, I'm not even flaming, I'm saying Oblivion is a decent game that could be better and some people here have been smart and kind enough to be informative, taking those suggestions to heart I'm going to give the game another try, since these people unlike you not only KNOW there are varying opinions out there but also UNDERSTAND them.

Oblivion blew me away when I first got it. Up until that point I had been playing mostly shooters and strategy, and Oblivion was my first RPG. Honestly I thought it was awesome. I loved that the arrows dropped when fired, I loved that you could rent a room at the local inn for a night. I loved that the guards actually gave useful directions to various points of interest and even advice while traveling.

Oblivion allowed me to cultivate my skills and focuses in a manner that actually made sense to me, rather than handing me an entire armory's worth of weapons that I magically know how to expertly handle. I also enjoyed (though I understand the arguments against) that if offered more challenging enemies as I got better, but never made me feel limited in terms of things I could do or places I could go.

Beyond that; it was a huge, beautiful world, filled with thousands of objects I could actually interact with. A world that I felt I actually made an impact on as I progressed.

It was great.

I've never played a Bethesda game that I found enjoyable. They seem to be categorized by huge, bland, empty wastelands of nothingness with like 6 towns spread 90 miles apart for no apparent reason. No thanks.

I definitely didn't hate it. But it was a huge disappointment with how hyped it was. It was fun, but the level scaling made progress feel pointless (one of the main points of a stat based RPG), and the world felt so bland compared to Morrowind. The characters all had the same voice, the Dark Elves lost their gritty badassitude and became just as whiny as everyone else. The Orcs became green Nords with no culture, and everything looked the same.
Sure it had it's moments. Like flaming animals raining from the sky, but besides the moments of brilliance it seems... monotonous.

I liked it because I love non-liner games. I'm at the front of the crowd griping about how Final Fantasy lost me when they went linear.

Give me a game where I can completely ignore the story line and go do whatever interests me, and I'm hooked. Whether that's Saint's Row or Oblivion.

Now, additionally, I started playing it the week it came out, at which point it was miles ahead of the graphics of everything else I had been playing. I love me some Neverwinter Nights, but graphically, the difference is immense.

It is not a perfect game, but it is currently one of about six installed on my computer.

It's fine to dislike it. I personally can't stand the zillion FPSs out there. I find them about as distinctive as individual games as Madden 08 and Madden 09.

It's all fine and dandy.

Your not the only one. No one is ever "the only one". Also, I hate Bethesda. Almost every game they make is over-hyped Garbage. I don't care what anyone says. Just look at that piece of shit Fallout 3.

I definitely agree with you in regards to Final Fantasy, I did play and enjoy FF10 but it ranked so much lower than its predecessors and a big part of that was the feel of being herded along a path, every Final Fantays has an intended course for its players but opening it up just a bit and giving us a true Airship gives a better sense of progress.

I love fantasy and I love RPGs. I tried to like Oblivion so hard but I realised I was pretending to enjoy it rather than actually enjoy it. The oblivion gates are a dime a dozen, I stumbled over one every 100 yards and they became a damn chore. I'd just slap the game on easy and rush my way through yet another boring maze of lava tunnels and climbing ridiculous towers.
Also the voice acting is just awful. I couldn't really get past that. I would live for the moments I'd get to talk to Sean Bean and nearly wept when he'd send me on another errand.
I tried being a thief but unless you're on a specific quest it's entirely worthless. I scouted a rich house which people kept telling me was full of treasure, broke in and made off with a sackful of shitty silver plates worth 2 bob each. Then the Gray Fox turned out to be the same old NPC with a bag shoved on his head and I accidentally got turned into a vampire. It just wasn't rewarding for me.
Unless you tell me I can marry Sean Bean at the end and become Empress I'm not logging back in.
I loved the pretty open world and the idea of Oblivion but the execution was just plain shoddy. I admit Skyrim looks a whole lot better (still not loving the cat and lizard people - I know it's hard to come up with new creatures but seriously?) but until I see some proper quests or some dialogue I'm not being very optimistic.
What I want is the story, characters and companions of Dragon Age in the open world of Oblivion. Maybe that's what awaits me in heaven.

Babby's first troll

I'm not saying people aren't allowed to like the game but I just don't see what other people saw in Oblivion, I'd like explanation/clarification on what makes it so great when to me it seems so underwhelming.
Don't call him a troll because he's making a point.

People have opinions, some of the things you listed as bad things some people love. Its called having different tastes.

You don't like a popular game, we get it.

We don't need a new thread every time someone disagrees with the majority.
