halo doesn't really suck but it isn't the greatest thing to happen to the human race either
it's pretty much choice, if you like futuristic fps's with aliens then you probably will like this game but if your like me and will take a rpg over it then you won't like the game..

But if it was generic then why did everyone say it "revoluntionized FPS" it "set the bar for FPS" etc, etc.?

(was the bar really low back then or were the reviewers just high or something?)

It was good when it came down to simplicity. I still want my Team Fortress 3 where everything LOOKS FREAKING SERIOUS AND REALISTIC ARGH!

So whoever said Halo was innovative was just wrong? (were those reviewers, fanboys, or reviewer fanboys?)

Most people's problem with Halo is that it's way over-hyped. There's nothing really wrong with the game itself, it just isn't anything we haven't seen before. It's the people parading around claiming its the greatest thing since sliced bread that makes people hate it.

If the fanboys would just shut up, nobody would care.

Also, it was called revolutionary not because it was a massive change for the genre, but because it proved it could be done on a console. If you compare this gen to last gen, there are a lot more first person shooters. Why? Halo.

The people that don't like at are the kind that try to find a deep story in a shooter and that's like looking for gold up your own arse, you might find a few coins you swallowed when you were six, but that's the point of shooters; behold the bad guy over yonder now kill him good! Than they try to make a story from that.

And it did revolutionize shooters: It's controls were flawless, all its weapons are well balanced, it was just plain gorgeous to watch and even more so for it's online multiplayer.

It wasn't Gears of War(don't wanna argue this but the cover system) or Portal kind of revolutionary but it has changed the multiplayer aspect of almost all shooters.

Because it's Average, run of the mill, competent, but nothing amazing like Half-life or even Bioshock.

It's not bad just... it's a cookie cutter, just generic.
I see what you did there. Nice.

The first one was great. I personally don't have it, its just that when it comes down to it, it doesn't bring anything new to the table. I was looking forward to Halo 2 and when it came out, I was satisfied. Halo 3 came out and it was more of the same. Thats just the problem with most games though as far as sequels though. I don't blame Halo for it, I just don't care for most sequels since its more of the same. Halo 2 expanded upon the original Halo while Halo 3...just didn't.

The multiplayer is revolutionary. Well, it was revolutionary in part 2, in 3 it was just honed to a mirror polish. The campaign itself is okay.

Lots of people don't do multiplayer, so you can see why large quantities of the population would not totally follow what everyone likes so much. That, and Call of Duty 4 came out.

Actually the reason it was "revolutionary" was because of its simplicity. Everyone's right when they say that it was simple and bland, but it was pretty for the time. The truth is that it's simplicity allowed for people to easily jump into and feel like a golden god, kinda like unreal tournament game of the year edition. Then when you get your chops busted in the multiplayer you get addicted because you know you don't suck, therefore you have to get better or figure out how everyone is cheating. It allowed the average gamer to get into gaming. If it were just PC specific you would have never heard a peep about it, but it was on console and showed the world that you can make a decent FPS. It was an achievement that people could play an FPS on a console like those who could play an FPS on PC.

And it didn't even have an ending where "The villain is over Yonder now kill him good" it had you running away in a jeep.
... Which was actually a well-executed sequence.

Unlike most FPS boss fights I've seen.

To be fair I don't really hate Halo; most of my hate is directed at Halo 3 specifically. What I do hate is its effect on the FPS industry and more importantly, insane raving lunatics who do nothing but rant about how awesome the game is, who seem to just congregate in my area. (ironic thing being I play World of Warcraft and as human nature would guarantee am subject to that kind of stereotype).

And it's not that I hate people who play Halo, but I hate people who play Halo and act like dicks about it i.e. most males between the ages of 13 and 22 in this place.

And I also hate what it's done to the FPS industry. I used to be quite the avid FPS gamer, part taking in such bloody shooting shenanigans as Quake, UT, Battlefield and such, and I have played quite a number of FPS games that were released some time after Halo 3 and I have to say that after those games, the only video games I can remember playing that had any shooting in it afterwards were Mass Effect and Fallout 3.

And lastly, I tend to be biased towards FPS games anyway. I'm a total RPG gamer, having grown up with such shut-in distractions like Ultima and pen-and-paper RPGs like AD&D, especially in the days when playing AD&D was something paramount to having an altar devoted to Satan in my basement.
