why does everyone hate noobs?

I feel that there is a difference between new players and noobs.

I don't expect new players to know everything. A noob is a person who is NOT new to the game, and yet continues to make dumb/annoying mistakes among other things.

Because they are a part of the rebel alliance and a traitor! Take them away!

OT: Because they annoy people who are actually skilled at the game they're playing.

I think you may have it wrong. What you are describing is a "newbie", someone who is new to a game's multiplayer section, who people generally don't have too much of a problem with.

The term "noob" is a name given to people who either use methods designed for new players (ie using the grenade launcher in MW2) despite being experienced player, or are generally unlikeable because of anger issues, excessive swearing/gay jokes, or the like.
Grenade launchers aren't designed for new players. It's part of the game. The people who get pissed at being hit by grenade launcher are noobs for being sore losers.

"Noobs" are the dickwads of the internet.
"Newbs" or "Newbies" are the new ones. No-one really hates them, just finds them annoying sometimes. It really pays off to get some basic single player practice before going into multiplayer.

Especially in games with aircraft.

What we have is a term misunderstanding.
I always figured it like this:
n00b: An annoying person within a game.
Newb (Or Newbie): Someone new to a game.

n00bs are bad.
Newbs are fine.

That's the way I always thought it was, anyways.
This is important. People often do not understand that someone can be a "n00b" even if they are very experienced at the game, whereas "newbie" is a term strictly reserved for people new to the game. This comic explains it well:

Being hostile towards n00bs is a (somewhat) reasonable reaction as they are merely destroying your enjoyment of the game. Being hostile to newbies, however, is just stupid, beacuse new players should be nurtured and cared for. This especially applies to communities where the influx of new players is generally limited as it is.

It's not that being new is bad, it's the people who are new and completely retarded about it that annoy me and others.

Newbs are just slightly irritating since you have to help them out until they've figured out what to do.

Noobs are essentially the poor playing of a newb with the added "bonus" of the person being an idiot and refusing to even try to become a better player.

It always seems like the n00bs join my game, and get stuck on my team, and make it so I can't have a good time.

I think the answer is complicated, and I will try and explain. Ultimatly I think it's tied to the whole intimidation factor of trying to get involved in established MMORPGs that plagues a lot of titles as well.

Being a newbie is not a big deal when the game has just come out, and everyone is still learning or has just learned. However when a server has progressed and most of the player base is of very high level, it can become annoying to have people pester you trying to do content in zones that the majority of the server long since abandoned. A lot of players do indeed try and help new players, but when it becomes a constant low-end presence it eventually begins to annoy people.

What's more, when your playing an established game on an established server, the newbies pretty much want to get to the end a LOT quicker than the guys who started out with the game/server, so they can "play for real" where ever the community is currently focused. What this means is that most newbies generally want to be "uplifted" to the endgame where the majority of people are going to be, and that can take a lot of work especially when dealing with someone his is ignorant. What's more doing it leads to people with high level characters who do not know how to actually play at that level due to never having done all the steps in between... of course with few people playing those earlier steps to learn with, it becomes a vicious cycle.

Game designers seem to think that people making new characters constantly helps deal with this problem, and truthfully that's not typically the case. Your typical "lowbie" is generally a character being developed as an alt to help a guild or whatever, is being played by someone who has learned a LOT about the game, and is trying to move through the content quickly, as opposed to slowly experience it and learn something. To a speed leveling "Twink" a genuine newbie is sort of an obstruction.

Not to mention the simple fact that some people (like me) choose to focus on a single character and generally don't focus on alts, and will be found sitting aroung BSing with people if they aren't doing anything to advance their character.

It's honestly a big problem with the genere, and I suspect one of the reasons why Blizzard is launching this whole "Cataclysm" thing is specifically to encourage people to experience the new content with brandy new characters, and create another period where everyone will be learning at the basic level again to draw in new people. Whether this will work or not remains to be seen.

Oh and of course there is another problem as well, MMORPGs are full of jerks. You never know if that "newbie" is a real newbie, or someone who is sitting around asking for help or handouts simply to see if they can get you to do it/twink their character for them. By the numbers that's typically going to be the case oddly enough. You'd be surprised at how many bored players think that kind of thing is amusing. Heck, they might even target someone they know just for lulz. "Oh hey Therumancer, my newbie hunter thanks you for helping him buy his mount... lulz" says the level 80 guildie as he burns 2,000 gold on a new static pet. Most people have a sense of humor about such things, but still nobody wants to get scammed even in jest... and a lot of times it's not something between friends, but involving a stranger who just thinks it's funny.

They're useless, and they drag me down with them.

Honestly, I don't understand why they can't just not follow me and take up space I could be using to avoid getting shot. It's like they want me to get angry at them.

As others have doubtlessly pointed out countless times, there's a distinct difference between "noobs" and newbies. One is bad at the game because they're new, but they acknowledge that fact, and are willing to "take their lumps" and get better.

Many people don't suffer newbies gladly, but everyone hates noobs (unless they are one, in which case they hate all the other noobs), as the noobs aren't bad at games because they're new and don't know any better - it doesn't matter how long a noob has been playing, they're not going to get any better or become any less annoying without a sudden influx of maturity. This is because noobs believe they already know everything they could possibly need to, and thus refuse to learn how to play the game better. Suggestions that they do so are met with hostility, earnest attempts at assistance are met with mockery and insults, and the trouncing they inevitably receive is met with inexplicable smack talk, accusations of cheating, and rage-quitting.

It's that combination of doing stupid things when they absolutely should know better, horribly inflated perceptions of their relative skill in defiance of all evidence to the contrary, and rampant jackassery that makes noobs so bloody infuriating.

In my opinion the worst thing about noobs in comparison to newbs is that they will always pretend that they are experts, even when it's painfully clear that they aren't.

I don't see why some people react so angrily to new players, everyone starts somewhere.

In some games, my success as a player (and as such my enjoyment of the experience) hinges upon the competence of my teammates as much as my own skill. I can only make up for so much ineptitude in a 2 player game of Dawn of War (for example).

I just spent almost an entire splitscreen on MW2 match trying to get just one of my friends with Grenade Launcher/Thumper, and it was pretty funny, because he was just being immature.

So yeah, doing it to annoy friends who annoy you, I'm a n00b and proud

Thats definitely the best way to put it, n00bs are almost trolls in many ways, always begging, refusing to learn to play for themselves, just generally being annoying. Newbs are just new, they don't know anything, but they're trying to learn.
