Why does the magnum in Halo have a x2 zoom?

I like the Halo series but every time I play I ask myself "why does the handgun have a x2 zoom?"
I can see how it makes sense in a design standpoint but what creative answer can you come up with.

Because the designers needed a weapon to test out the areas and enemy spawns and such.

Seriously, that gun could take anything out if you know how to use it right.
Rocket Launcher? Hell naw. I've got a pistol.

Well, if you look at the iron sights, they're absolute shit and I don't even know where the scope would go, but I just imagine that it's actually a BR in disguise, folded up transformers style.

It's also the same game where the butt of your weapon is more deadly than shooting them at the head point blank. At this point, it's pretty safe to say that logic and realism went out the window pretty early in the development process.

Considering it's power I'd have thought it was a new kind of compact Spartan laser...

Well it IS lots of fun to take out banshees and wraiths with it...

With that said, I don't think the 2x zoom is the least of concerns when they designed the weapon.

Well that's because Spartans are basically mass-produced Captain Americas, and have super-human strength.
Besides: The pistol insta-kills unshileded/unarmored targets on headshot.

Nah, the Spartan laser occasionally DOESN'T kill something...

If I remember right, there was some strange explanation in the books about the gun essentially having a smart link to MC's HUD with a 2x zoom camera or something.

You mean like storm troopers and their rifles?

To surpass my quota of catty comments about Halo in a thread.

Then why didn't I have much fun playing Halo?

In point of fact, a good part of my problem with it stems from a growing problem in FPS when it came out in 2001 that games were going down this realistic cul-de-sac. We must have realistic level design, we must have realistic item placement, we must have realistic weapon carry capacity, we have to manually pick up weapons, and so on.

For example, the levels in Doom aren't anything like the areas they're supposed to represent. They're designed first as game levels with a nice sense of flow. They shameless litter the place with power-ups, even using a +1 health power-up to spring a massive enemy attack who have been hiding in a closet just for this opportunity. And your rocket launcher has a capacity of 50 rockets... and that's not even your most powerful weapon. They just gave you a strong opening premise and ran with it. This is fun trumping realism to the nth degree.

Oh, how I miss fun in First Person Shooters.

This thread is not for arguing if Halo is fun or not is about the gun only. Anyway Bulletstorm looks like a fun FPS.

Maybe its got a special program that provides a scope like feature to Spartans in MJOLNIR armor. I always wondered how a scope would work with a visor that big.

Because you have a super advanced suit of armor you don't think that thing can zoom and sync with where the gun is pointing?

I know, why I prefaced the comment with the catty thing. I try to limit my Halo snark in threads, because I don't have a problem with people liking it (although I do have a Pavlovian response if people try to give it credit for things widely established years earlier). I'm not a fan, but it's not like I think Bungie put out a bad game. It's merely not to my taste.

First comment was germane to the conversation, even if a bit snarky. Second one, while in response to another's comment, is thread drift and I know it.

Well, because it's pretty cool, but never mind that, where is the damn thing? Seriously, I cannot figure out where the actual scope is on the gun. Maybe it links in with the in-helmet HUD?

That's ok I just do not want anyone to get on probation.
