Why does the mainstream media hate gamers so much?

I think they use it as a scapegoat. I mean honestly, it seems like main stream living would want nothing more than to blackball the gaming industry and every time something that could in any way be linked to video games happens, BAM!

It's actually quite sad as we all know, but hey, when the day comes that gaming is proved to enhance intelligence and dexterity creating smarter/better working people, then we can just point and laugh =P

In short, the media's full of stupid, stupid people. Maybe not so much the reporters, more so the people who tell the reporters what to do.

It is just like with any other stereotype. They think they can bunch gamers together in one lump category and think we are all the same. They don't care to delve in deeper to see that there are many many different types of gamers out there from the goody goody church goers to the not so nice people. It is almost just the same as racism, although, in gaming, we are all multi-colored pixels!

Because scapegoating and fear mongering sells papers and boost ratings for crap mainstream news scources, which is amazingly hipocritical considering the media is quite possibly the most self destructive thing in society.

I don't think anyone who is totally sane to start with has ever played a violent game, I thought "Well this looks fun, I'll just go get myself a gun and shoot down a school". It's totally ridiculous to assume that games are to blame for some psychopath's behaviour, people need to start examinind our society as a whole, and paying more attention to the fact that maybe these people are just downright crazy and need attentio, rather than totally overlooking them and blaming video games. If these games really cause so much violence, then how come we never hear of game designers or games testers, people who are exposed to these games on a daily basis never make the headlines after murdering someone?

From what I've gathered, it's mostly because people refuse to be held accountable for their own actions. Parents can't be bothered to raise their children, and when the kids inevitably fuck up, they refuse to take responsibility. Video games are just the most convenient scapegoat currently, it'll change soon enough.

Basically, because it's already been through radio (30s), germans (40s), teenagers (50s), LSD/Dope (60s), video (70s), glue/heavy metal (80s), ecstasy/films (90s).
You forgot to mention Literature (like Catcher in the Rye), Comic books, Jazz, D&D, and immigrants (of all ethnicities; current whipping boy - Latin Americans).

It's video games now because that's the most popular thing that the people who make and watch the news are least likely to take part in: most people into the network news (especially) like boring and passive forms of entertainment like the gossip that passes for news nowadays.

Politicians on the other hand are starting to back down now that they realize that mature voters also play video games. They were on the bandwagon for a while because they could blame the problems with kids, not on the voting parents, but the most popular form of entertainment. It's all about passing the blame onto a group that can't (as in the case of young people who for some reason can't vote) or won't (the until recently un-united gaming industry) fight back.

Then you can always turn to HL Mencken who defined Puritanism as "The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy."

BTW, it's not just Fox News (who is just the worst but the real sickening thing is that it has a huge share of the market which makes me think that most of my fellow americans are completely pants); all american news is useless except maybe the publicly funded PBS news programs which cover less gossip and more worldly matters. Otherwise I turn to foreign news.
Speak for yourself. In Australia we still have Michael Atkinson preventing any changes in our archaic laws governing games. For more info on Atkinson, watch Zero Punctuation.
Oh and our last Prime Minister said: "We will decide who comes to this country, and the circumstances in which they come." We have refugees who have been in detention centres for five f***ing years.

But enough of my politician bashing, claiming something is evil without experiencing it is like claiming GTA4 trained me to kill people. In all fairness I suppose it did train me to kill nameless generic NPCs in the game, though I still have no intention of taking to the streets in a Niko costume and claim games caused the octuple homicide, resist of arrest and grand theft auto that followed...
Yes I should've said I was just talking about America.

Yea, isn't Atkinson the reason I can only get Generic drugs in Fallout 3?

The pharmaceutical industry in the US owns so many politicians I'm surprised they didn't get Bethesda to make our version with the real drug names.

Incidentally, I do have a Niko costume; it's my regular clothes.
In Fallot 3 in Australia we don't even have morpheine. It's called Med-X... Also because of Michael Atkinson we didn't get that game for ages after it was due to be realeased here, which was still a long time after the release in the US. The body responsible for game classification refused to classify it... it seems to me that they were refusing to do their jobs. It only got let through when a few minor changes, such as drug names, were made.

Because they see gamers the wrong way, as loser nerds who only have their nerdy friends and live in their moms house at 34 years old. Which isn't the case. (Obviously)

And also the fact that a lot of people who shot at schools liked video games. (Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold come to mind, they were both fans of Doom and Wolfenstien 3d)

In the Media's eye, the worst parts of a socio-economic background, or a group, is the stereotype it applies to all poeple from that group. I'm talking about the gamer that is 25, morbidly obese, and lives with his mom (Always a guy, mind). The (by the way mostly Liberal, which isn't a bad thing) Media see's 99% of gamers as that type, it's frowned upon as being a social tumor. They also expect every gamer plays WoW. Well, sometimes they're right, a LOT of gamers play wow, it's crack on the computer. The (Medias) generalization of games is to kill the most the fastest. (The Media says) that they are unrealistic in every aspect of themselves, and that they frown on social life. Sure they do, its just that Halo has 200,000 accounts online at any given time, and WoW has even more.

The startling lack of realism is apparent, they just dont want to scratch the surface because that would be too empathetic for an apparently unbiased news medium. They emulate the picture of gaming based on what they see. Do they read about Bioshocks amazing plot? No, they read about GOW's huga amount of gore, because thats what they hear about the most. If you got locked up for everything you did in Oblivion, the realistic consequence would be a life sentence or Death. That would be stupid, where would the game go? But no, what they do is let you out after a while. So on and so forth. In real life, you get shot once and you NEED medical attention. Even a shot in the leg will kill you, and most people dont know this. But that's not what this is about.

The bottom line is the only redeeming qualities of games are far below the surface, at least in society's eye. In order to realize these qualities, they would have to investigate past journalism, they would have to become gamers. That is not their job. In even shorter terms, It's not their job to read the book, its their job to tell everyone what they can interpret from the books cover.

You know what had the most depolrable horrific violence I've ever seen, sicker and more profoundly disturbing than any video game?

Passion of the Christ.

Followed close second by the Bible.

I'd just have to say that people don't understand it, so the media paint it as bad to get views. It's cold-hard business, really, but soon the new generation will be in control and games will be accepted - we just have to wait.

It's quite simple. People will hate anything that they can't understand. This is why racism is still a problem in America and this is why the mainstream media is so easy to bash anybody who does anything out of the ordinary with their lives. In the early 90's the media attacked fans of rap music. In the mid 90's it was comic book fans. Now in this day in age it just happens to be gamers who get the most disrespect.

Also, what they said.
Wait what?!? I though films hit the masses in like 1890s

Well if you compare cinema to video games, its going to take another fifty years before video games are truly accepted.

Because the media is to blind to the source of the actual problem. Why isn't anyone asking where are these kids parents and why haven't they explained to their kids how to distinguish fantasy from reality. In regards to the Animal Crossing news story, the reporter who covered the story probably doesn't have any kids and was assigned the story so the media can divert attention from actual problems in the world. Please excuse my horrible grammar

I recall reading an article entitled "America Nation of Fear" (at least I think that was the name) anyways it talked about the media always wanting something dramatic or scary to boost or keep interest in their show. So they will "tweak" or "emphasize" certain facts in order to make the news story more interesting. Games and the gaming community are no exception.

Or in Canada when a guy killed people street racing and they found a copy of most wanted in the car. Of course this guy HAD to be racing because he plays a racing game. Not because he was an idiot. The first part was sarcasm BTW... :)
