I don't know, and this may just be me talking out my ass but it might be something about Japanese culture having a dislike for closure.
It also might be that so many animes are just a take on every day life that (Assuming the characters are all alive at the end) their lives will go on. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya did this after Disappearance ended. So did a lot of animes. You get invested in the characters that the plot feels secondary and after it ends it still feels like there's more to show.
Out of all the animes I've seen the only 2 with definitive and satisfying ends I've seen have been Death Note and Code Geass (And maybe Cowboy Bebop, It's been a while since I've seen it all the way through)
Elfin Lied or Claymore ended open enough to continue but never did.
Eden of the East ended on a fucking cliffhanger.
And I don't even want to talk about how bad Clannad's ending was.
So yeah, it might be a cultural thing.

Agreed, it's simply amazing how well those movies have been made. Besides maybe studio ghoul I stuff, I've never been so engrossed in the animation and art of an anime as I am with these.SajuukKhar said:

I don't think it's a thing with Japanese culture; sometimes manga leave an opening for the story to continue, but for the most part they tie up all the plot threads, often kill many of the characters, etc. so that even if there are further adventures, they'll be another story instead of a continuation. Using some of your examples, the Elfen Lied manga came to a solid conclusion (one that would have been impossible for the anime because they butchered the adaptation early on), Death Note followed the manga closely, Claymore is still ongoing, and Code Geass was an anime first and thus didn't run into any problems (can't personally speak on Clannad or Melancholy because I haven't gotten around to them yet. And I don't know what the heck happened with Eden of the East; it almost seems like the anime was just to build hype for the movies they were making.). So I get the distinct impression that it's less a thing about Japanese culture and more a thing about anime adaptations getting screwed up. Maybe mangakas do it for the art, the people who adapt them to cartoons do it for the money, and good endings aren't profitable? Maybe the manga system just doesn't fit well to 13-26 episode seasons of half-hour episodes?Mikeyfell said:

all I could think of was FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF because the ending was such a massive troll, I expected a troll, but not one of that magnitude.
