I liked 8 the best. Followed by 5.

NO ONE TALKS SHIT ABOUT BUTZ!

As for why...
7 was many people's first.

It was many people's first RPG. Or rather, many people's first Final Fantasy.

Not only that, it popularized RPG's in the West.

two words. Materia system.

The materia system in Final Fantasy 7 provided (what i believe to be) the perfect level of control over characters, while still retaining their own personal attributes. And it made the most sense out of any magic system i have ever seen in a game.

Oh, and Vincent was one hell of a bamf.

I love that song. Final Fantasy 7 was one of my first rpgs(4 was technically my first) and I have yet to find a game I found as great as that one. Some have come close but they just don't match it. Maybe it was because of the great array of characters and the fact they showed personalities and all had quirks. They seemed human with problems just like the rest of us. Nine was the last game to really give that feel, another game I loved. Really the story, characters, music, combat, atmosphere all the fun mini games and everything else. Usually I can string a game up and find something to hate about it but I just can't for seven or nine really. Although the trance system in 9 annoyed me.. Ten was..eh. It seemed like the last desperate push to be who they used to be,but came up short. It was a decent enough game but not anywhere near 7 or 9 in my opinion.

It's because FF7 was the games that MADE IT in N. America for Japanese RPGs. The story was made for a broader audience. FF7 was the first FF in the series to stray away from having magical fantasy lands as the major plot point. It was a futuristic, sci-fi, soap opera with swords. Name another game like it at the time?

All the FFs before 7 were far greater. especially 4 and 6.
And for the record, there were a couple of FF games released before 7. Though I think it was the first where they didn't give you Americans the easy version :p

The only "easy version" I know of getting was the USA version of FF: Mystic Quest.

I think IV (II)[footnote]II in America[/footnote] and VI (III)[footnote]III in America[/footnote] remained the same in terms of difficulty when compared to their Japanese counter-parts.

Nostalgia........that is about it IMO there have been better battle systems, MUCH better characters, and better stories but for the same reason the perfect dark rerelease on the XBLA got 10's was due to nostalgia

Whatever, just wash your hands.
because it was the first game to have a ton of cut scenes to set a story, it was a big production that in some ways seemed more like a movie then a game and no one had really seen it done before like that

It was in 3D back when 3D games were still new and exciting. That, and it was many people's first experience with the series at large.

Also, Omnislash. After 30 odd hours of watching Cloud slash his enemies once when issued the "Fight" command, it's really, really damn satisfying to see him go "Scream" on some monster ass. Come on, admit it.

I know for a fact FFIV(II) was shipped as the japanese "easy-type" but I'm not so sure about the rest. It was overall an easier version of the game, with easier enemies and less items to confuse you.

Yeah, like a lot of people it was my first FF, the others not having been released here in Australia. VII is not my favourite, but I do really love it. And yeah, One-Winged Angel. Such brilliant music.

Then I stand corrected :p

My favorite is still X, but I can see why people loved 7. Its the reason why most gamers got into JRPGs, because at the time, gaming wasn't as mainstream as it is now. It was the first of its kind, and is still a good game today.

It's my personal favorite just because it flowed the best for me. The other games just seemed all over the place (besides maybe 8 and 9) and 7 just flowed and had the best systems for pretty much everything in the game. (I really hated 8's magic system)
