That basically amounts to the characters where good and evolved well. The world was beyond anything i have ever seen, that still holds true for me today. I also seem to recall a ff game that came before 7 that had modern tech, that video they played on one episode of unskippable.(I forget which number and i think i own the game)
YOu're thinking of VI, released as III in USA

I'm going to give a quick link to demonstrate:

http://www.nowgamer.com/features/583/the-complete-history-of-final-fantasy-part-two

The key part is the bit that says FF7 was the first to be released in Europe. Is there any wonder why the earlier ones don't hold much sway with me (British by the way). I was only 9 when FF7 got released anyway. I mean they didn't even release Tactics over here, which I keep seeing mentioned time and again as one of the "Best Gamez Evar!" But unless it gets put on PSN I'll never be able to play it.

Actually FF7 sits in 2nd place for me. It got beaten out by FFX, my favourite game. So no doubt I'm a little guilty of nostalgia goggles but I wasn't prevented from prefering another game.

I c wut u did thar...

Joking aside, I REALLY should play FFVII one of these days, but don't have the resources to do so. That said, out of the two main games I played (III and IV), I loved IV and loathed III.

Coming up next: FFX! It's like Pac-Man, but with less Wakka. Will I like it? Will anyone care? TUNE IN NEXT MONTH TO FIND OUT!!!

Final Fantasy VII popularized the genre of JRPGs as a whole. While games like the first II Final Fantasies and Chrono Trigger all reached limited success in the US, FFVII was what introduced many to the genre and brought it out into the open. Personally, my favorites were I,IV, V, and VI

1)I read FF7 doujinshi before I played the game. Never did that with the other FF games.

2)I liked the plot, story & characters.

3)FF8 came out around the time I built up an intollerance to 3D animation & CGI (for several bitter reasons). It was one of the last 3D games I played untill 2007. (I spent about 10 years refusing to play anything that wasn't 2D or watch any movies that didn;t use old fashioned special effects). & after 3D games started to look good, I always wanted them to either remake it or do a 2D anime of it, because of how horrible the graphics were.

4)Sephiroth killed the annoying chick. Always reminding me of the most-hated Final Fantasy Unlimited in which it's most annoying character was the ONLY person who DIDN'T die.

5)The guys in the Advent Children homage were hot, especially since they were all modeled after REAL Japanese men. The thought of seeing those faces in the remake are beyond awesome.

No, he was thinking of a game before VII, that was featured on Unskippable, that is VI. Everyone knows Aerith died in VII. It's one of the biggest spoilers in video game history.

600 hours?! Can you, like provide a pic or something?! I mean, seriously... Only game I got addicted to was Dissidia: Final Fantasy, and I've only clocked 160 or so hours...

No one pic can capture 600 hours of gaming.

Sorry, thought you were talking about Aeris' death, not the Unskippable video. My bad!

For me it was the first of its type i played and i really enjoyed it throughout, every playthrough. If it wasn't the first of its type i think it would have made a bit less of an impression on me.

This was a big deal when it happened. Because it was permanent. People weren't used to this. We were used to things like Rayman, MArio and the like. Then all of a sudden this comes out and says " She's dead and you CAN'T bring her back! She's dead forever!" This was a BIG deal in 1997.

Back in '97 everyone cared. Not many games come out and say "This game will in no way have a happy ending"

It wasn't my favourite, but then again, I tend to put VII and VIII together in terms of how much I liked them. IX was really my favourite, because it was the first one I played, and overall I was much more into the fantasy thing than I was into the XPunk future.

Also, I think I preferred the lighter and softer tone of IX, while I have nothing against VII's darker themes, and think they were handled quite nicely within the framework, I just liked the grandiose sense you got from IX. It's the same reason I gave Last Remnant and Lost Odyssey a try, because they looked like a return to that overblown fantasy epic.

Also also, FFIX was pretty much the one thing that inspired me to become a writer, way back when I was 11. I'd always thought about writing a fantasy novel, and then I played FFIX and was like 'I have to do this.' So I did. Which is nice because it's tend years later and I'm doing a writing course and it's kinda steered my whole life, and I don't think VII would have had the same effect on me if I had played it first.
