Well thats an easy one
[HEADING=1]They fucking killed Aeris[/HEADING]
That basically amounts to the characters where good and evolved well. The world was beyond anything i have ever seen, that still holds true for me today. I also seem to recall a ff game that came before 7 that had modern tech, that video they played on one episode of unskippable.(I forget which number and i think i own the game)
YOu're thinking of VI, released as III in USA
No, they fucking killed Aeris in FFVII, not FFVI
So he killed someone it's not like people don't die in every other game, who cares!
Back in '97 everyone cared. Not many games come out and say "This game will in no way have a happy ending"
Twisted Metal, even that game had more feeling then FF7
MEh, hate the Twisted MEtal games. horrible gameplay with stories that are dark for the sake of being dark...
What was so bad about the gameplay? and for the sake of being dark thats like saying Cloud being emo for the sake of being emo or mario being Italian for the sake of being Italian (plus last time I checked the Italians don't have any other big heroes)
Cloud wasn't emo in VII, or even Crisis Core, he was just emo in Advent Children.... And I just don't care for driving games.
I feel the same about Driving games but with actual Driving games like those shitty racing games but I find racing games with weapons and stuff (Like Wipeout) are lots of fun, and emo is emo no matter what its in

The Materia system is one of the best magic systems in all the games. It allows for nearly any combination of spells and skills to be used while still limiting you to 16 which is more than enough.
VERY VERY TRUE! I miss the materia system so much. Definitely the best magic system in FF.
It is definitely up there it is my favourite anyway but I also liked a few others. The game has been milked so much by Square that things like this where it actually did exceptionally well get ignored by the fact that people ***** about spin offs and Cloud being emo which he is not Vincent is more emo and he has a decent reason for being so depressed.

Why? Because it was the first Final Fantasy for many. Personally, I hated it, but then again I liked Eye of the Beholder which has some grossly horrible problems with it as well.
The reasons why some people say it's the best:
Aeris' death scene. Supposedly the most shocking scene ever, however I forgot I actually had Aeris with me since I used Vincent and Cid...
Materia System. I can't actually remember how it worked other than being an upgrade system of some kind. I really can't remember it.
Sephiroth. A hatable villain, but hardly the best gaming villain out there...

Probably a few other things people really like about it...

Personally, for around that era, Fallout and Eye of the Beholder were better games...

FFVII was an okay game. Not great, but not horrible either. My biggest problems really could be summed up as Cloud and Sephiroth. They were just such bland characters with annoying stories. Cloud's 'identity crisis' issue is probably why I can't stand him. And Sephiroth just has nothing that makes him interesting, outside of being a badass.

As for me, 6 was my first Final Fantasy. And what I loved about it were characters. I also enjoyed 4, Tactics and 8 a lot. Overall, I preferred the system in 8(I know, this is impossible...), and Tactics runs all over the story of 7.

As for why its so big, its just likely because it was the first 3D Final Fantasy on the Playstation. It was a new and cool execution of the old RPG idea. Even though personally I think the graphics were horrible for the time half the time(Overworld and such) and pretty good the other half(Cutscenes and battle).

looking through peoples comments, I think I may be the only person to see 12 as being the best, which I find odd as it does have the most indepth world out of all of them (people in Enix have been quoted to say this), but I can see why people loved 7, but I also think people are looking at it through rose tinted glasses

I went through the game again recently, especially after playing other, and in my opinion, better JRPGs. I find the rose-tinted nostalgia glasses argument to be unreasonable in my case.

Another thing I find people missing is Sephiroth also had motivation for what he did. Granted, it's also the "identity crisis" issue that Cloud went through, sans the schizophrenia, but at least he doesn't just want to blow up the world for shits and giggles.

The ironic part is that the ending, with the lifestream helping to stop Meteor, is almost exactly what Sephiroth was aiming for, alluded to way back in disc 1. Only differences are that he didn't want Holy to interfere, and he wanted to gain the power from the lifestream as opposed to the planet. You know, so he could cleanse the planet and allow the Cetra to reclaim it.

Too bad he missed the memo about there needing to be surviving Cetra in order for the Cetra to reclaim the planet, and stabbed the last one. Go figure.

It was many people's first RPG. Or rather, many people's first Final Fantasy.

Not only that, it popularized RPG's in the West.
Pretty much what i was gonna say.

7 is fun because of the materia system.
I for one loved 9 the best (strange choice, I know) with 10, 7, 4, and 1 as close favorites.

I never thought 7 was all that special, 4 and 6 were both much better and 9 was great as well, never played 8 and it was a few years after 7 came out that I played it, all I got out of it was a huge "ehh that was ok"

VII is one of the best. It gets a lot of love because of that fact. Most of the hate it gets is simply because it's the most popular, and people love hating on stuff just 'cause it's popular (making them idiots). I would personally say that it ties with VI for the best game I have ever played.

In short? Because it's good. People have different opinions, and no Final Fantasy game is the same, but VII is one of the best, thus up for different opinions about it.

7 and 9 are my personal favourites. For me, I like VII because:

- It's got a really engaging plot that touches on a lot of neat ideas (Animism, Environmentalism, what constitutes terrorism, corporate control, etc)
- The cast of characters is charming and engaging
- It's both heavy and light and mixes the two of them superbly
- Lots of fun minigames
- Emotionally affecting
- The nostalgia aspect. VII wasn't my first FF, but I know it was for a lot of people.
- At the time it was made, it presented us with a lot of firsts. You can see where things from VII have diffused into other games, and it's held up really well over time.
- It took itself seriously enough to tell a good story, but not too seriously to be pretentious about it.

imo its not any single thing that makes it great its the combination of everything the sound track is epic the materia system is imo perfect it is bound only by your genious in using it, the characters are likable and sephiroth is bad ass but most of all for me its the story its deep and immersive and lets not forget that its one of the only games thats designed to appeal to ppl who want a serious challange emerald weapon and that other even tougher weapon are ridiculous youll need to log hundreds of hours to beat the second weapon whos name eludes me atm.

I havent read all the comments but ill be surprised if im the first to say this, if they remake it i dont care how much it costs or what console it comes out on i will pay serious money for that game in HD.

oh and i played the game for the first time only a year ago on an emulator so nostalga isnt a factor in my case, once you adjust to the graphics its smooth sailing.

I think something that gets overlooked when discussing FF7 is the tone it presents. It's not the hero's adventure to protect the crystals and save the princess anymore, but rather a miserable struggle to survive in a world that's been laid to waste by people much better off than you. Barret and Cid swear a lot while a troubling number of NPC's make suggestive passes at your female characters, and that's before you even meet Don Corneo or step into the Honeybee Inn. It's not a very nice world. And yet it's that grittiness that drew me in.

It doesn't stop at Midgar either. Previous games may kill off characters or NPC's to make you sad or miss them, but this time death is used to provoke feelings of horror, even despair. Jenova leaves behind a trail of dead bodies when it escapes its incubation chamber, Sephiroth leaves a giant snake impaled upon a tree as you chase after him, and of course there's the jolt of shock from Aeris's murder (and I do mean MURDER, not just killed off. Other characters in the series sacrificed their lives willingly).

I hesitate to call it "mature," because the gaming culture of today equates "mature" to things that aren't really mature at all, ie boobies and blood. But it was definitely heavier stuff than I ever saw in any game before. That's the lasting impression I got from FF7.
