Sell your game for $9
They retag it at $35
0% of revenue goes to publishers.

I just buy my games elsewhere and sell them on e-bay (and usually get more than I originally paid anyway). Or Steam.
So, how much money do you send the publishers when you sell on E-Bay?
The percentage they got when I bought it new, instead of preowned from Gamestop.

These videos are about 2 - 3 years old and it's still pretty damn relevant. I really can't wait to move, thus giving me a reason to quit Gamestop. Not that it's a terrible place to work at, I just don't like mixing work and pleasure (especially when my coworkers give me weird looks when I tell them how much I hated the Black Ops demo and start ridiculing me when I ask for a copy of Bulletstorm). Of course now that Blockbuster is dead (Blockbuster being my favorite job right after an actor on a haunted trail), I really can't say I'm looking forward to Job Hunting once I've moved and am getting settled.

As I watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxApoyEePfU&feature=related: I fucking hate those com-data cards e.e Also, my gamestop doesn't have a public toilet: just an employee one which doubles as a storage room. No shit (no pun intended): we keep consoles and defective games in the same place where we relieve ourselves.

I've basically grown up at a gamestop. I mean, I basically just buy and don't sell back. I like my old stuff. For me, when I'm looking for games, I like to be able to walk around a very large selection of stuff. It offers me achance to look at the games that went under my radar. Whenever I go to other gamestores, the ones I've gone to have a lousy selection and don't ever feel like they're showing me anything. When I'm online, I have to already know what I'm looking for.

I won't say gamestop is perfect, but as long as I do some research before buying stuff, I usually feel rather comfortable doing my business there.

Honestly why should GameStop stop using a system that people use? It's not GameStop's fault that you were blind enough to go through with the trade, and they aren't even forcing you to sell your games there. It's all your choices and your actions. Don't blame someone over your blind judgement.
You make a good point but I think this video is intended to show people not to use gamestop. I posted it here to...I hate to use the term....I guess.....raise awareness?
Oh I agree wholeheartedly with you on not using GameStop in that way. I just figured you were blaming GameStop for other people's actions. I think you use the term correctly lol.

Wow....

I thought I was the only one who noticed. I wanted to buy left4dead and they said they would sell it to me used for $60, the game had been out for over 2 years and usually prices for games go down in that time period. I wanted to tell the guy to go to hell, but I went to walmart and got it for $20. $40 difference What the hell...

Just like any second hand market. These people clearly never traded in a car or something similar.
That's why I always said that gamestop customers are the biggest suckers this side of used car lots.
Sure they have every right to rip off their customers (except for the part where they sell used games as new: that's illegal) but this affects those of us that know better too.
Besides the gouging of the used game market, overall the success of gamestop has made many of the other companies that make products and services for gamers realize that they can be extremely liberal about their pricing structures.

Meh, used prices are fine for me, but I just wish a game I bought maybe three days ago, realized I didn't like and want to return would net me more than 10 bucks.

Here in the land of Aus, Fable 3 is still like, $88 for a used copy at EB Games >.<

So all the clever people import a brand new copy for around $50 including postage.

Buying games retail? I just don't even...

Gamestop doesn't need to be stopped, they need to have competition.

The issue isn't that Gamestop sells used games, that's fine, the issue is they're the dominant force in the market. This means Gamestop can basically do whatever they want and get away with it. Plenty of other, bigger, retail outlets are trying to get in on the used games market and they're not finding it easy going because of GS's massive brand recognition as a buyer and seller of used games.

If you don't want Gamestop to be the dominant force, then go out of your way to go to a Mom n' Pop video game store. You may not get the same return on your used titles or the same price on buying a used game, but you'll be supporting actual people and not a faceless corporation. The Mom n' Pop stores are the ones that will import that crazy JRPG you want but will never be released in your area or find those old SNES titles you used to have as a kid. Support independent games retailers, show GS that you (we) won't take it anymore.

If Gamestop sees that their customers are willing to pay more or drive farther just to NOT go to Gamestop, they will be forced to change their business model. Until then, don't be an idiot and pay $55 for a used game you can get for $60 new.

I dont see why there's all this hate for a BUSINESS that found a formula that works and is making money off it. I mean, there are many, MANY other businesses that do way worse stuff like this in there business practices, and they get away with it, make a healthy profit, and no one has this massive outcry to stop them.

Besides, the used Games sales arent cutting that much into developer companies' profits, dont let them bullshit you like that.

Thus is the free market.

Personally I like it cause with the edge card I can play a game, not like it, return it with a full refund.
OR beat it, give it back with full refund. And it's easy way to get a few bucks.

of course buy.com allowed me to get assassins creed brotherhood for ten dollars less the day it came out, new. Along with a textbook for college for $40 new rather then the normal $164.99.

Exactly. Back before Gamestop bought out EB, prices were much more reasonable at both stores. A $5 markdown on a used game would have been laughed at, not purchased -- and this was back when $5 was a %12.5 markdown, instead of the current %8. Since they bought out EB, they haven't had much in the way of competition for used sales, and they've been able to charge pretty much whatever they want, since their main competitors are the new game retailers, instead of other used game retailers. They effectively have a monopoly, which isn't really diminished by the fact that there are still a few mom and pop stores in business; afterall, Walmart's main competitors are national chains like Target and K-mart, not Bob's General Store in the town of East Armpit.

I used to get annoyed at how little I got for trading in games at retail shops and how much they cost to buy used but it's just the only thing that can work for them.

Consider the following:

It's easier than eBay or some other ad site. No deciding a price, no posting it on time, no waiting for the person to pay you, no risk that nobody will even buy it. You get less money but you save a lot of hassle too.

They probably don't end up selling a lot of what they buy. Especially if the game is old or unheard of. They need to cover the cost of all the games that they never manage to sell.

They use up their limited space with this game.

They need to pay expenses (wages, light, heat, rent and so on).

Finally, they need to actually make a worthwhile profit after all that. They're a company. Generally, the only reason they do anything is to make more money. That's how they function, deal with it.

On top of all that, you can just avoid them and buy online if you want, they don't have a monopoly.

Unfortunately, in addition to not being funny, the youtube poster mumbles too much to be consistently coherent.

I have no love for Gamestop and I encourage people to avoid doing business with this company but this whiny tool hasn't properly done his research, several of his claims simply cannot be true, and he is really being melodramatic about it. Yes, many of their employees are useless stoners who hoard new systems and games for their friends. Yes, the content they offer as an incentive to pre-order is crap and they are known for losing reservations. And yes, if you walk into a gamestop right now and ask when Mario is coming out there's a good chance the guy behind the counter will say "next month!"

Instead of bitching, why don't we simply warn others to find alternatives to shopping at Gamestop and not enable unfunny morons who think referencing Rosie O'Donnel's menses is funny.

I recently sold an iPhone 3G. I went to the only gamestop-type chain near me that buys iPods and iPhones. There was a tiny crack near the USB/wall connection so they wouldn't accept it. Did I storm off and take to the internet to slander this company's name? No, I went to 3 local pawn shops and found one that was willing to pay $50 more than the top price that the chain ever pays for the 16 gig 3G.

I don't believe that Gamestop will sell you a used game at full price or that it'll be scratched beyond playability. But, just in case, whenever I buy ANY used game I shop around first and I check the disc before I hand them my money. It's called being a savvy consumer. You may have noticed, we don't ***** as much.

Not to argue with the rest of your post, but I bought one just a couple of weeks ago. It was old enough that "full price" was $9.99, so it didn't really bother me, but it was technically in a used state. Specifically, they remove their new games from the shrink wrap, put the discs and manuals in a sleeve which they keep behind the counter, and then put the empty box out on display. Rather than lowering the asking price for these damaged goods, Gamestop charges full price for them, and people happily pay. They also put price stickers directly on the box, instead of on some form of shrinkwrap, and it's almost impossible to completely get rid of the residue if you decide to remove it; Gamestop is not the best place to go if you want something in mint condition.

That is why I use Amazon. They carry every game that has an English localization and you can buy used from there really cheap. You just have to check the used seller's history. I buy all of my limited/special edition games off Amazon because I know they have the niche games that chains like Wal-mart doesn't carry and that they will be in top condition.
